Maybe doesn't count since it was meant in the literal sense, but I remember seeing "jackass" in some Looney Tunes thing when I was probably preschool age and asking my parents what it meant.

Think after that I sorta felt I was getting away with something by watching it, even though my parents were cool with it.
>>

I don't know, I've seen 'pissed' used in a few shows and movies that never broke the 'damn' barrier.

Yeah, any time those episodes are on air they replace "pissed" with "ticked.

In the original Swedish dub, Frank used to say (what would be the equivalent of) "fucking shit". Everyone in the show said damn for the most part but Frank did say shit a lot, because you know, kids swear. Shocker.
There was also one episode where Jerry's dad said "You shouldn't spend time with that Frank. He's a cunt".

It was rated 11+. Pretty sure those parts must have been altered in dubs.

Reminds me of something I read about "Heart of Ice." The network censor objected to Batman saying "My God" in response to the video of Mr. Freeze's backstory, so the producers responded with something like, "Okay, come up with a better response and we'll use that."

The censor couldn't come up with anything, and so the line stayed.

Inversely, Bruce's "I'll see you in your nightmares!" line from "Perchance to Dream" was originally "I'll see you in Hell!"

It's not being surprised by swears. It's being surprised by swears in a cartoon. Completely different. Even if you heard swears all the time, hearing them from a cartoon is a surprise. Especially to a kid (which, may I remind you, was what this thread was specifically asking about). As a kid, you just knew it didn't happen. As an adult, you recognize the censorship standards.

And then this guy comes in with his "Swears don't surprise me. Nothin does, I tell you hwhat"

Trying to put yourself above others on am anonymous image board is stupid. Coming into a thread concerning a certain topic only to announce to everyone that said topic doesn't actually apply to you and that they're all autistic is retarded.

It's been... semi-okay with using it in reference to the religious hell or talking about being damned or damnation in kids' shows, but using them as exclamations of anger or surprise, like "DAMN IT!" or "What the hell," has always been considered not safe for the children's ears, due to the fact that up until the last 20-30 years, even stuff like crap and ass was considered incredibly rude to say

In the 90s-00s, stuff like swearing, guns, or anything even slightly "naughty" was often edited out of cartoons, with the exception of some innuendo jokes.

Ever since CN began using the TV-PG rating on their shows in 2008, they've become a bit more lenient with their standards. Even though it was edited, I think Total drama island was one of the "edgiest" and crudest shows on Cn up to that point, not counting adult swim.

This image completely misses the point, that's exactly why it was unexpected for it to happen because of how mild cartoons are made to be, there is a constant effort by the censors to disallow anything even mildly offensive, that's why it's in issue.

I was surprised when they said the equivalent of "shit" in the Hungarian dub of that Ozzy & Drix show. But then other CN dubs started using it too, so looking back it feels like it's nothing special.

From recent memory, I recall hearing some swearing in Chowder, EEnE, Regular Show, TF Prime and possibly others. Muricans would flip their shit but no one really cares about it here.

I recently found out that the RoboCop cartoon also got dubbed, and even that had some foul language, probably to make up for how tame the original was.

We're talking about the context of it being publically accessible broadcasted on a system that's literally censored by a group of fat cats to become more child-like friendly in a way that follows tradition in our country. We're not talking about the usage of curses outside of this context whatsoever, since it's not as taboo as doing something this radically different than what's expected on a children's network.

We may be "culturally and sexually repressed freaks," but I'd take that over being as fucking retarded as you and missing the entire point of the thread to show off how badass you are on an anonymous image board.

I remember in hey arnold someone (I think it was either helga or pookie) said "shit". No idea how they got that past the censors.

In the Latam dub of Superman TAS in the episode with Lobo, whe supes punches him through the Lexcorp building, in the original he screams RENDFRAGDESTROY, but in the dub he screams SUPERMAN HIJO DE PERRA which means "superman you son of a bitch"

>people ITT making fun of America

As a Canadian, I'm genuinely curious, are crap/hell tier level of words allowed in non-English versions of cartoons?

The early seasons of PPG were pretty lax with censorship in general, though. Especially with the violence.

Not words used exactly, but this move shocked the fuck out of me

>first action scene they get attacked by a giant mechanical lobster
>mechanic seals off the boiler room and traps men inside as they run to get out
>escape pods launch
>literally see the inside of one and the guys faces as it blows up
>"oh I'm sure they're all just soaked and injured like they always do it in cartoons"
>light a candle and have memorial where they talk about how like 200 guys died
>"well fuck"

And this is all in the first quarter of the movie. It's violent like this all the way through. Great fucking movie though.

Just because kids say something doesn't mean it's not a swear.

Beast uses an Emily Dickinson quote in an episode of the 90s cartoon that includes the word hell in it. I remember doing a double-take when i first heard it as a kid.

that being said, if i remember correctly, the organization called the Hellfire Club in the comics had to be renamed the Inner Circle on that show

Well, I wasn't a kid, but this was pretty surprising. I had to go back a few times to actually get the closed caption shot.
