Because it's not anymore. A casual can download a couple of back issues of Batman from the silver age with minimal effort, skim them, and talk on a forum about the Batman of Zurr En Arrh and Kathy Kane like they've been a hardcore reader for 20 years.

I guess cause its autistic as fuck? I still love continuity to death but making is a huge deal is pretty dumb. I do think a great author knows how to work around it to tell the story he wants to tell and shouldn't just ignore it.

On a business level, I'd imagine that it's a burden because both DC and Marvel seem to assume that any stories reliant on callbacks to 10+ year old books instantly lock out new readers (I don't think that's true though).
