Now that the dust has finally settled after 25 years, what does /co/ think of Ren and Stimpy?
>>

It's gross
>>

It's a hell of a lot better than the crap that passes off as cartoons nowadays.

It's okay.

This.

Cartoons nowadays lack soul. Ren & Stimpy had soul in spades.

>>
>>84203055
spongebob isn't a Ren and Stimpy imitation although it takes elements from it.

If you want imitation, look at cow and chicken
>>
>>84201246
Yes. The first two seasons contain some of the best episodes of animated television ever. The show is notable not for its humor, but for the ambivalence it instills in its audience. It's gross and, at times, truly frightening. Stimpy's Invention, the episode you took a picture from, is a great example of that.

I never understood why /co/ didn't like this show. Not every episode was a hit, sure, but if you don't think Stimpy's Invention, Sven Hoek, Stimpy's Fan Club, Space Madness, and Man's Best Friend are all masterpieces, you have shit taste.

I never liked Ren and Stimpy. Courage the Cowardly Dog still holds up I think, as well as the DCAU shows. Dexter's Lab was okay, Johnny Bravo was okay, Rugrats was decent. There are some good shows today too, but I do think many of them have a slight decrease in quality. Nothing beats Batman: The Brave and the Bold though.
>>
It had really weird pacing. Awkward pauses and whatnot. Otherwise, fun show.
>>
>>84201558
>,,, soul in spades......

I see what you did there.
>>
>>84203458
In retrospect, shows like Animaniacs and Tiny Toons were shit sitcom humor trying to masquerade itself as a cartoon, trying to imitate the real deal.

Ren and Stimpy and other creator driven cartoons were pure cartoon made by cartoonists.

It's weird that now the creator driven cartoon is now a dead concept since the best people are not being given the jobs and that's why everything sucks.
>>
>>84204162
I want to argue with you, but I bought the Animaniacs dvd sets when they came out years ago, watched one episode, and haven't watched another in all this time. It's so pop culture heavy, I just can't get a desire to keep going.
>>
>>84203569

It has no soul, it's all gross-out humor and the same randumb stuff as Gumball.

An excellent example of a creator that needs someone pushing back with limits to make the funniest (and weirdest) stuff they can.

Ren and Stimpy bothered me often as a kid and it still does. It's crazy weird.

It had a very important influence on the cartoon medium and pushed the boundaries of animation.

>>
>>84204162
>It's weird that now the creator driven cartoon is now a dead concept since the best people are not being given the jobs and that's why everything sucks.

That's because they don't want to spend the time and money to actually make good cartoons anymore, with actual creative direction, a vision, humor, and thought behind them anymore.

They just want to plop a CalArts graduate behind a computer that has flash on it, and let him pump shit out with factory assembly-line efficiency.

Although, its a wonder actual 2D cartoons even exist anymore, since everyone seems way more focused on pure 3D CGI these days.
>>

Ren and stimpy had some moment, but man. I remember watching some of this shit in my late teen years on nicktoons, and fuck that shit is nasty. Like over the top gross for no reason but to try to push the envelope as much as possible.

While I enjoyed some animation stylings of red and stimpy because it was unique and interesting, it was also abused a lot with the whole ideal of "Every frame, there needs to be something moving." while movement in cartoons is good and you don't want things teleporting all around and shit, you don't need someones heads exploding and shrinking every time they say something with an exclamation mark.

It's just... shit. There were too many cons and not enough pros to make it an enjoyable watch.
>>
>>84211356
Heres the short of it.

Spumco = good, mostly the Carbuncle episodes.
Games = bad.

Got that? good.
>>
Ren and Stimpy was a real cartoon for kids, teen and adults, as in, everybody could enjoy it for what it was.

Modern cartoons that try to appeal to both kids and adults follow the Shrek model of making jokes, references and allegories that fly over the heads of the kids and only the parents could understand.

For me if you think Adventure Time, Gumball and Steven Universe is better than 1994 Simpsons, Ren & Stimpy and Duckman, you are crazy.

The best episodes are classics.

John K way overrates himself.

They were prepping an uncut box set a decade ago, but it never happened, presumably because Paramount decided they couldn't wring any more money from fans. And judging from the packaging, John K. only had any interest in ensuring the episodes he worked on were uncut, meaning the Chicken in a Drawer short, for example, would still be missing if this set had been released.

Still, I would've loved to see the bonus features. The set was supposed to have an animatic for an unfinished Adult Party Cartoon episode.
>>
>>84212922
I never saw the "Chicken in a Drawer" segment when Nicktoons Network was airing late-night marathons of Ren and Stimpy many moons ago.

I guess it was edited out of later airings just to shove in more (real) commercials.

In October 2001, John Kricfalusi met with the families of 9/11 victims. After a brief interview in which he expressed his condolences and hope for closure, he reportedly burst out laughing and made airplane noises and mimicked two planes crashing. He then picked up the child of a deceased victim and whispered into her ear "Your dad's dead, bitch", and proceeded to put on a pair of sunglasses and unleash a barrage of martial arts attack on the small child. She was rushed to the hospital where she was pronounced dead due to extreme trauma. When asked later about the incident, Kricfalusi became visibly sexually aroused and repeated the same attack on the reporter.

Animation was among the best when it was on a roll and okay when it wasn't.

The main problem was that it was structured poorly, story was near nonexistent or just bad and never felt it was particularly funny but humor is personal taste and the structure of the jokes were solid enough.

David Feiss also worked on 2 Stupid Dogs. A lot of the later R&S crew went on to work on Cow and Chicken.
Some R&S guys (Chris Mitchell, Vincent Waller, Sherm Cohen) along with some guys who worked at Spumco in the late 90's (Aaron Springer and Erik Wiese) were involved with season 1 of spongebob. A lot of them ended up also being involved in early post movie with some other R&S people (Richard Pursel being an outline writer for post-movie psongebob) getting invovled

Very expressive and crazy animation that I really love. Big influence on my art. Some of the pacing is pretty slow and exaggerated, Ren and Stimpy being a disturbing and weird show.
