He was a one shot villian in the original Segur comic. When the shorts were made Bluto was the perfect foil. In the comics Popeye's main enemy was the Sea Hag. Also the reason why Bluto became Brutus was because of the mixed ownership of Popeye first by King Features and second by Paramount. When they made new cartoons they just changed the name.

Some cartoons have Popeye straight up murdering people for inconveniencing him. Sure, it's played for laughs and he wallops a guy who then has a halo and angel wings, but let's face the facts, that was murder.

Bullshit she was. Thimble Theater was the strip Popeye came from and the first ten years of the strip were about Olive and her brother Castor and their family. She was a flapper and a goofy would be socialite, but by the time Popeye was added as a cast member the Oyl family had amassed a huge fortune thanks to Castor's misadventures. Past hat point Olive got a lot more 'gentlemen callers' including Popeye himself, but she wasn't hooking. A bunch of jerks were just courting her so they could marry into her money.

Not only have they aged well, I'd say they're superior to a lot of stuff we have out there nowadays.
The artists back then were ridiculously skilled in their craft.
Also shows still to this day try to emulate what these old cartoons were doing.

Unfortunately the stiff cost cutting animation that we have nowadays, doesn't really lend itself to that format nearly as well as the hand drawn stuff of the past.

Actually, the way it played was that King Features didn't remember they had created Bluto in the comic strip, because he was an entirely one off character in the very early days of Popeye, so for a long time they simply thought Bluto was a creation of the cartoon and eventually made their own rip off version of him, Brutus, due to trying to cash in on Bluto's insane popularity.

Everybody involved wanted to do a completely different type of movie, Robin was so cocked up his ass that he ran out of shit to do and had to smuggle drugs through customs to him at the set. I think the musical numbers were only added later to give the movie something funny, hence why it's the only good thing about the movie outside of getting the look right.
