I think you guys need to be a bit more observant about your panel composition and how things flow. You have a diagonal slant across three subsequent panels, and Miss Melee starts in the center, falls to the left and...then kind of reorients back at the center? And her thoughts, the point of the third panel, the impact in the central panel of the page, are really small and understated.

A better way to visually guide your reader would be to place her more on the right hand side and slowly have her fall into the left corner, visually "cornering" her and showing her "slipping". It also leads to your next panel naturally.

It would also be a good idea to tighten the shot with each successive frame for a smooth transition between these three panels.

Pic related, shoddy edit to show you what I mean.
>>
>>84076972
Yeah that looks pretty great. Centering people in panels is a general no-no. Especially if there's nothing else in the panel.

What are some good ways to improve your dialogue? I recently shared some of my work with an editing friend of mine, and he made my lines sound so much better.
>>
>>84077879

>>
>>84077879
Lots of people will recommend lots of things but as a writer myself I honestly never really studied or researched or observed to get better at dialogue. I practiced, took critiques, and made sure to stick to keeping it succinct. My only real dialogue influence is Tim O'Brien's novel, The Things They Carried, but I stray pretty heavily from that in the dialogue department, I think. It's important to think about "what's the fewest amount of words I can use to say the same thing?" and "would people in the real world talk like this?" with every line of dialogue you write. I'd honestly say it's more attention to detail, practice and applying fundamentals than it is proper study to get good at dialogue.
>>
>>84077979
>what's the fewest amount of words I can use to say the same thing?
I try to think more 'the most interesting number of words' but then my comic can easily be accused of being too wordy. I constantly think about how it should be in an audio format

I think my problem is my writing is kind of boring, but my editor friend made my lines more interesting, he even surprised me by using words I never would have thought of. He has 30 years of experiance, so I guess I can learn a lot. Are there like free sites where you can share dialogue for critique? Should I get a thesaurus as well or something?
>>
>>84078161
i like to bust out the online thesaurus from time to time, especially for poetic stuff or rhymes, but usually it never reccommends the words i want for normal dialogue.
the tough part is knowing those words that are unique and indispensible. for those you just have to listen carefully to erudite people talking and pick out words you haven't thought of and go study their meaning
>>
>>84078161
You could take your dialogue to /lit/ and have them crit you. I can't promise they'll be any good, though.

>>
>>84078161
For general writing purposes, it's good to have a thesaurus and a style guide (something like Strunk & White's Elements of Style, Chicago Manual of Style, or the New York Times Manual of Style and Usage).

There are also numerous specialized books on period/subculture slang, idioms, proverb collections, etc. I'm especially a fan of the 1811 Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue. They usually make good pleasure reading, but sadly aren't utilized in thesaurus format. In 1811's case that means you can't just look for synonyms for asshole. Instead you've got to read through to F and find "fundament" without knowing that "fundament" was the word you were looking for.

The best thing to do is just read a lot, read out of your depth occasionally, and google the bits you don't understand or are curious about. Also if you've got an editor correcting your grammar, take some time to look up whatever "rules" he's correcting you on. You might as well know what a participle is.
>>
Reposting this because I never got an answer back from the anon who requested it on his thoughts

Is it still possible to get popular on deviantart, or should I move my comic onto tumblr? It feels harder to find some smaller lesser known artists on tumblr than deviantart. And i dont like the interface. Where do you guys recommend starting out?

I was planning on getting a somewhat decent fanbase on deviantart than branching out to tumblr, twitter, and what not.

How do artists on tumblr and twitter even get popular?
>>
>>84079408

DA is kind of a shitty place to try to get popular by way of comics, unless you already have a huge following.

It isn't really built for comics. I suppose you might get a following if you spam groups, and do tons of fanart to bait people into coming to your page, where they'll also see your comics, but I've not seen any of that work for too many comic-focused artists.
>>
Are there any guyver-esque webcomics out there?
>>
>>84079408
DA isn't worth it as far as I can tell.

On tumblr, I think getting popular is some combination of clever tag use, submitting material to tumblrs that reblog stuff in a given category, following/engaging with people, and so on.
>>
>>84079408
dA's heyday has long passed
>>
>>84079405

I'm fucking losing my mind over having to start my pages over and over from the smallest mistake /hyw/. Is there an easy way to condition myself to like drawing digitally so I can just ctrl-z my problems away, instead of having to redraw the same shit tens of times over from the very beginning?
>>
>>84079638
could you learn how to digitally edit your physical drawings?
in any case you shouldnt have to start the whole thing over from one mistake, only the mistake part.
>>
>>84079689
The problem is the mistake usually comes so far into doing the strip that its near impossible for me to fix without there being a lasting mark on the page.
>>
>>84079467
>>84079481
>>84079533
okay. Fine. ill accept it.

What do you guys suggest I do then to start getting known on tumblr? On deviantart, I started getting views just by commenting on other people's work and joining clubs. Is there some way, I can find a bunch of brand new comics on tumblr, with no comments, so I can spread out and engage more? I feel like trying to talk with a tumblr celebrities is pointless.

>>84079481
>submitting material to tumblrs that reblog stuff in a given category
Is this just using the right tags? Or is there like a special thing I can submit things to?

I like to do writing more than comics though btw, and using wattpad. Dont kill me.

That's just the main problem I have with wattpad and tumblr, where can I find the brand new submitted stuff, instead of the 10k views pieces of work?

Should I also do twitter?
>>
>>84079638
Why are you starting over and over again, Anon? Are you drawing directly with ink? Don't you know erasers exist? Ink erasers? Don't you know how to patch your drawings with paper cutouts or tracing paper?
There are a bunch of ways to save drawings on a traditional medium, you don't have to start a page from scratch every time you fuck up a little detail.
>>
>>84079859

You can digitally undo anything. Even on physical pages/traditional media. It might take a little time to get it to look right, but far better than literally starting the same page over.

Worst case scenario, there's white out, and/or just drawing the bad panel over again. Even on professional comics, if you look at pre-scanned pages, you often see entire panels or areas whited out or covered up and redrawn.

It isn't the end of the world if you make some mistakes, short of literally knocking a bottle of ink over on the page, or something.
>>
>>84079908
>Is there some way I can find a bunch of new/unknown comic artists to engage with.

This thread for starters. Any number of webcomic forums will also do.

>Or is there like a special thing I can submit things to?

By way of example, look up eatsleepdraw, artistsupport, and webcomixwatch. Poke around their respective "about" or "faq" sections. There are many blogs like these, and they work a little like groups on DA. You submit work to a spot that already has a bunch of eyeballs on it. With luck, some of those eyeballs are drawn your way.
>>
>>84079122
Nice start, and I know you're doing it for fun for an anon who asked.

Personally I think you're flipping the fonts too many times. I know what you're going for in the accentuations on words, but branding wise, for a logo, this is a poor decision.

Also, it's not really clear what the "punchline" is for the logo is. Now, this is something you have to ask the creator of the series, but is it "brutal" or is it "cruel" or is it "super-hero high school"?

The TMNT logo here is a good example, where the TMN part of it is understated giving the attention to the word "turtles," which is more important than them being teenaged, mutants, or ninjas.

If this were my logo project, I'd keep the "super brutal super cruel" font type the same, maybe make the words "brutal" and "cruel" ever so slightly bigger or bolded or colored differently to give them emphasis. I would then join the font faces of Super Hero Highschool together because the hook of the whole thing isn't that there are super heros, it isn't that there's a highschool, rather there's a highschool for superheros. Thus you join them.

That's just my 2 cents.
>>
>>84080174
>this thread
>Feel when I did post here and got nothing
well, more reasons to end it.

But i'll try these group things I guess. I'm going to make sure to find lesser known people. This is bullshit that tumblr and wattpad only shows people with 10,000 notes.
>>
>>84079908
>What do you guys suggest I do then to start getting known on tumblr?
Fanart. That's how my artist got to 800+ followers. Most of his fanart was /co/ drawthread deliveries.
>>
>>84079476
or anything about teenagers with full-body scifi armor, either mechanical or biological. i'm kind of annoyed there isn't anything like that out there and i want to see if there is so i know where to improve and not retread the same mistakes.
>>

miss melee writer is that you
>>
>>84080365
I mean that if you're looking for people to engage with on tumblr, here we are. Everybody's got one.

If you're posting here looking for feedback and desperate for a (You), the way to do it is usually to ask for specific feedback (how's my dialogue? is this composition clear? which pose says "x" better?), show up often, and maybe chat with somebody in the same post so they'll feel obligated to look at and comment on your work in their response.
>>
>>84080497
Not him but he isn't wrong. I got 900+ followers doing something similar. The tumblr for my comic has significantly less followers though (150)

I've got over a thousand followers for my porn. About 20 some for my webcomic. Would it be a good idea to advertise the webcomic to the porn people, even though it's not porn related?

Here's my tumblr, wattpad, deviantart. No, you don't have to read it. but could you guys tell me what im doing wrong here? I don't know what to do, or where to comment on things. I feel like I wrote everything wrong, but im too embarrassed to post it on /lit/ because i know it's garbage. But im not sure how to even start getting good at writing stories. i write my stories like they're plays. I don't what to do. I felt like i was actually getting somewhere by increasing my page views on deviantart, but on tumblr and wattpad. I feel like im doing everything wrong.

I guess I could try doing what you said to write small things and ask for feedback.

So there. And since im already doing this, ill just say im DollSlaps. i used to post critiques here in october, and i made a comic that had a character called prokii i submitted here. im a senior in highschool too, so im not a starving artist and have some time to learn. I wish i actually had some online writing friends or be an apprentice of someone instead of anonymous people. Ive already shitposted on the /ic/ beginner thread for two years. I feel like I wasted my whole highschool life doing nothing, and ive gone through multiple phases that just left me hurting. I think the way you draw characters is great; they're super extressive and you clearly understand stylisation and the look of your pages would translate perfectly into a cartoon.

No offense, but that's because your art isn't any good. It's going to take a lot of practice before anyone's going to take note of your work.

The best advice I can give you right now is to forget about trying to advertise yourself and focus on practicing the basics of drawing until it's in your bones. You can do comics if you want (it's good practice for art and writing), but don't expect them to be successful, and don't make them long or complicated. You want to finish them.

Well, if I went back and made several more attempts and spent more time looking at references i know i could do better. But, i'm not really concerned about the art. Plus, not to show off my ego, but there's a fair number of people who have a solid fanbase with mediocre art, and it wasn't even for fetishes.

What do I even write? A paragraph? I don't know what to write besides a long story. All I want to write is a story that feels like a japanese light novel. My most favorite cartoon every is haruhi suzumiya after all. That's my goal.

I was never too passionate about drawing. I want to be proud of coming up with a good story; not if i can draw the most kawaii waifu, or create the most epic reaction faces.
>>
>>84082367

>>
>>84081522
I don't think anyone would mind if you just uploaded the first page of the chapter without the map. Maybe you could upload a placeholder page where the map would go so the comments won't get messed up when you add it later?

As for the page, it's really nice but I feel like the characters don't look at all wet when they hit the beach.

I really need to find out how to upload the text directly in a tumblr post.

Besides, it's too long for anyone to actually read. I only got one person to read it. And he did it because I begged.

I know im being complicated. But i feel stuck. like, what do i even write that people will read? Has to be short, and i could put it on a tumblr post. Maybe im supposed to write short things, get some fans, and then after I have some fans, they would be willing to read longer things. But i don't what to write about that's only a paragraph long.
>>
>>84082634
Have you tried going to forums for authors/writers? Participated in NaNoWriMo?
Other writers are probably more likely to give your stories a read when you're just starting out. In a comic thread, people kinda expect you to actually post comics.
>>
>>84082634
It's just bad and generic. Plus, this isn't 1900s, writing alone is not enough anymore. Free entertainment is a click away for everyone with internet.

You can cite one or two outliers, but that's just you looking for excuses to staying mediocre.
>>
>>84082778
Sounds interesting. I guess I could try writing forums. Im going to start writing small things and submitting tumblr.
>>84082939

How do i write anime that's not cringe worthy weeb stuff? Like, i want to write anime like a harem or school life or milky holmes, but i don't know how to not make it cringy and cliche. And I don't want to write an anime parody or any otaku spoof.
>>
>>84079408
DeviantART is horrenous for comics. If you want a following there it is best if you utilize your artistian skills on either fanart or original art to reel them in because they'll want to see more of your content.

>>84079908
>What do you guys suggest I do then to start getting known on tumblr?
Adapt to a schedule and continue to post daily: if you're going to post a original comic and if it is your first comic, post at least a few pages on start day to draw in an audience. Be sure to mix in fanart and original art too, on off-days when you're not posting your comic. Add in concept art and captions to accompany it.

>I feel like trying to talk with a tumblr celebrities is pointless
Then don't. Lurk their Tumblr, some do provide informative Q&A's on how they got started and how they became well-known in the community.

>Should I also use Twitter?
Twitter is a good communication platform, so yes. Another key to building an audience is through interaction with your fans and keeping them up to date.

>wattpad

>How do i write anime that's not cringe worthy weeb stuff?
You can't.

If you try to write anime, it will suck, always.

None of the the good stories they make in Japan try to be "anime", they're just trying to be good stories. Write YOUR take on harem or school life or whatever, as its own thing, without trying to imitate anything. If it ends up "anime", then so be it, but make it so that it ends up there because it's actually the best place for it to go.
>>
>>84082939
This. Write a book, no one will read it. Make a comic, and lots of people will at least glance at it.

I'm a natural writer but had to learn to draw.
>>

Oh, what I had INTENDED to draw was a worn-out sole; but you're right that it does look like an intentional pattern; just adding some vertical lines should give the better effect.

just remember what made good anime good and try to channel that same thing. because you know what made bad anime bad in recent years? 'trying to be anime like those other ones we like'.. and failing. it's not enough to aim at something good, you have to understand it. fully know what made it what it was

I would try to add more detailing on the ground in the first two panels. Maybe at least some shadowing under/around the buildings, and the bones in the second panel. I like how the skeleton sort of wraps around the landscape, though. It's a simple, small thing, but adds believable depth.

I'd also try to maybe not put so many planets in the sky. 1, 2, or 3 look really, really cool, but a sky filled with giant planets just doesn't really make much sense from a real science perspective.

Also, I feel like the flying thing--as neat as it looks--really gets lost in the last panel. His black spotting is almost identical to the ground below. From the thumbnail, you can't even tell he's there, and the fact that his wings are almost the same size as the chunks of ground you black spotted below, it gives it an off look.

>>84084186

Same thing to say about the planets in this page. Also, seems kind of odd to have the title like, 2/3 the way down the page.

You're going for that old-school, pulpy sci-fi, and those usually had a big establishing shot panel with the title in it on the first page, or they just went all out and had a big one-panel landscape splash page with the title.

Thank you very much for taking the time to look.
I don't argue woth crotoque as a rule- but thought I should mention:
The planet is the last a survivor of a previous universe, the planets in the sky are the literal ghosts of all the worlds consumed by this world (Destrokk) in the godwar that destroyed that universe. Hence the title.

>The planet is the last a survivor of a previous universe, the planets in the sky are the literal ghosts of all the worlds consumed by this world (Destrokk) in the godwar that destroyed that universe. Hence the title.

Ok, I see. I still think it looks a little odd, but I think part of that may also be because some of them kind of look like they were just pasted there, so they stick out a little too.

I suspected you had some intentional reasoning behind it, but it still seems a tad strange to me.

Maybe do something to make them look a little less "solid" or something? I'm not sure how a "ghost" planet would work, but something to indicate that they're more phantasmal or ethereal in nature, or something.
>>
>>84084568
I'll definitely give it some thought. I do need to detail some if them, though. I honestly didn't notice I'd left so many undone.

You're right about that. I should probably try to change the color of the sky a bit in some panels to make some of them more visible.
It's kinda the difficulty when the onomatopoeia is water-related (so it'll be blue); but the character are also SURROUNDED by blue from the sea or the sky, so it's sometimes hard to find the right shade...

>>
>>84086908
No understanding of the basics, for sure. I should hope nobody's debating that.
Brings up an interesting topic though. How do you define artistic flair? One assumes it's not simply a matter of taste.
>>
I remember in that chat, Dewd was a bit under the weather because /co/ had that thread mocking that guy who made a comic ripping off a lot of Capcom stuff like Resident Evil and Megaman. I remember him clearly saying that seeing that thread made him worry he was going in a similar direction, and could potentially be frowned upon.

This was before everyone ganged up on him with the Overwatch stuff and now this, so I think he made up his mind on the subject, if you ask me.

And I can respect that, even if I don't fully agree with it, if it's a well thought decision made by someone who knows what he wants, if that what it is.

well he's had a few of them from the beginning, but what's weird is the most obvious and major instance was a genuine accident. he made the tweaks to get that character away from looking like a ripoff. Some of the others had some influence but weren't straight up ripoffs.
I think the necessity of full originality in characters varies directly with their main character status. A one-shot cameo can and should be a direct homage for comedy purposes, but you don't want them sticking around forever.
I've made some stnanks in the past by mistaking a single unique character for a repeated archetype. Fortunately I usually do a bad job of ripping things off, and as any actor will tell you, a poor imitation becomes your own character.

Flare is no imitable by anyone else's hand, totally subconscious. When you are very consciously making something, you have no flare.

I think dewd has a fuckton of that (it's not as if he sits and tries to meticulously copy, if he did I would hope it looked better), but I do see what you mean. and I notice it in my own stuff. I go into a very different mode when I'm trying to directly copy something, even if it's a reference photo.
actually I think what you're detecting with dewd's art, that "very conciously making something" aspect, comes from how hard he has to focus on making things not just look like a big messy pile. which, yeah, the fundamentals help with tremendously. Even though it looks like a lot of work at first, it really is worth it.
>>
>>84087304
well there is an intrinsic problem with drawing fat cartoon characters, if you give them stubby legs you have to give them stubby arms to match, otherwise they look like apes. but that seriously limits their body language and gestures. you look at peter griffin, or even homer simpson a lot of the time.. their hands don't reach down to mid thigh at all, they would look wrong if they did. but if they need to reach into their pants or something, the artist just cheats a longer arm

I especially like the idea of them literally being several ages together, and thus representing different age groups... except if they have always shared one body, then they wouldn't have a normal-person viewpoint..
>>
>>84089852

>they wouldn't have a normal-person viewpoint.

They are humans with very human aspirations. I suppose if anything it may be more akin to how one would grow with a disability. Still, them simply being a product of modern society (regardless of their condition) occasionally provides very relatable, and understandable points of view.

For better or for worse they were raised with the idea that their condition would be hidden. It eventually became very apparent that completely shutting them in wasn't the best option. They hid under the guise of a somewhat more subtle medical condition, and would attend public school in fits and starts with their "parents" filling in the blanks with homeschooling.

Each girl is an individual, They essentially learned to share their lives with each other. Naturally this doesn't just work without conflict, and the story picks up where such a thing might really come to a head.

dear anon that does a comic
all of us bees at the hive think your comic is just the our knees!
due to the structure of our compound eyes, we aren't able to make out the intricate details exactly, but the colors are nice. one of us landed on it the other day and tried furiously to pollinate parts of it. It didn't work yet but we're going to keep at it.
you are welcome to come by any time and have some of our honey as long as you don't disturb the bee babies

I had an idea for a webcomic about a little frog wizard apprentice that gets sent on an impossible quest by his master but he doesn't know it's impossible so he just sets out on his adventure anyways and has a lot of fun lighthearted adventures along the way. Would you guys read it? Pic related, it's a concept for the main character.
>>
>>84093570
post your comic and anons will ease the uncertainty
>>
>>84094397
It's super complicated.

I mean the comic is at http://decompressed-comic.tumblr.com/archive which is the comic itself, but there's also stuff like the thumbnailed things for my higher budget interactive sequences, like http://a.pomf.cat/octpaj.swf (arrows to move, z to jump, x to shoot) which I submitted as a "thumbnail" equivalent for a future bossfight sequence in the comic with some placeholder sprites, and which have a concept that isn't properly conveyed in the archive yet.

It's stickman shit, admittedly, but I have tried to see if I can polish stickman shit to a mirror shine.
>>
>>84094018
It's a decent enough premise, but as with all premises, the execution is far more important.

I like the book.
The fez doesn't read very well, since the color is similar to the book and its height makes it line up.

From a thumbnail this almost looks endearing, and then in full size it's easy to see that you have no grasp on basic character design and it's more of a decent head on a squiggly non-body.

Worse is that he's just blatantly ripping off Wander.
>>
>>84086399
>When you can decipher someone's entertainment history through his work, it means that work is just a mindless regurgitation of what actual creatives produce.

Ehhh. Depends.
If it's more vague (like, characters having an ability vaguely similar to another's or slightly similar physiology) there's nothing wrong with small tells.
>>
>>84095397
Nothing about >>84085609 is a small tell. I took one look at the character design and I knew it was blatantly copied from Wander Over Yonder. I don't even watch that show, my experience with it comes from glancing at various WOY images posted to /co/.
>>
>>84095457
I'm not defending it, I'm disputing the intensity of the claim against it as it relates to other things.

For example, you KNOW Hater from WoY is influenced by Skeletor. A lot of fictional badguys who are skeletons have that influence because, despite He-Man being shit, Skeletor is a pretty good design and a fun character.

There's nothing wrong with the fact that Hater has elements cribbed from Skeletor, because his design and character are distinct. Dewd's character is Hater dressed up as a questionable Latin American stereotype. He's even a space traveller despite that being at odds with his gimmick just because Hater is too. That's the point I'm getting at.
>>
>>84094018
I dunno, Anon. The thing about frog protagonists that they're overdone; nobody wants frog protagonists anymore, LEAST of all in a Fantasy setting :^)

seriously though, it's cute, I like how he carried what I assume is a norma-sized book in his back. I think the clothes could be a bit more interesting; maybe with some pattern on the robe sleeves or having a belt with bags and containers of magic ingredients attached to it

The thing about that is, it's not the VERY FIRST thing you think when you look at him. You don't take one look at Hater and go "oh, it's Skeletor" like you do for Dewd's Wander knockoff.

>tfw can't decide on a single protagonist or a group of five
The reasoning is that while I've taken great care into crafting the five, they act as a unit, and thus I keep wondering if having just one would be easier to write. And I already have a basic outline of events.

The initial solution was to have each party member have a solo chapter to themselves, but this would be splitting the party, and they're supposed to be smarter than that.

Now, I'm one of those assholes who strives for a string supporting cast, so one of the obvious advantages of a single protagonist is that said supporting characters get more of a chance to do things. The issue here is that the current single protag concept is somewhat unsatisfying, and I want to avoid a boring lead like the plague.

TL;DR: Any advice on how to keep a lone hero and a five member party from being interchangeable?

he's being derivative out of love for various media. I can tell you straight up the only reason I create is to make more of the stuff I like, and when I was younger the shit was straight up ripoffs. Are you gonna tell me you didn't go through that phase too? and don't say "and some guy set me straight by getting up my ass", he did not. you just got more original over time naturally.

>>
>>84099255
Check out Endtown. The character interaction is what makes the comic so great to read, aside from the setting and good art. There are no "main protagonists" but "spotlight characters" within each arc. Maybe you can try something like that. It would allow you to be interchangeable and focus on each characters as they deal with their own struggles.

Then write it so splitting up is an actual good idea, or at least preferable to the alternative. If there's a nuke and a hell gate happening at the same time, you have to split up to deal with both.

Or instead of having a "solo" chapter, just vary who's in the spotlight/who's the viewpoint character.
>>
>>84099502
or what if the comic follows each of their separate adventures before they meet up. I've always wanted to do that but I neglected to.

Yeah, that sounds about right, actually. Gotta focus on the interaction. A bit of group conflict here and there. Thanks.

>>84099502
>Then write it so splitting up is an actual good idea, or at least preferable to the alternative.
Well, the idea is that they split up to obtain some vital resources. They spend most of the story essentially level grinding, and they're on a bit of a time crunch. So I think I'm good there.

>>84099255
Design five such that any given pair or trio works as a set of foils. Instead of solo chapters, have duo/trio chapters. Establish not just your characters, but how they relate to each other. Also duos/trios aren't a stupid way to split and re-configuring the party can keep things fresh for more than five chapters.

I would advise using a separate paper for your roughs, and using a light table to transfer your pencils onto a clean sheet.

Alternatively, you can do your roughs digitally and print them out using a light blue ink, and just pencil over them, so when you scan them (in greyscale) the light blue lines will mostly disappear and you can tweak your finished, clean lines in a digital program.

I like the idea of penciled comics. They add a nice texture when done right. Try experimenting with the above methods and see what fits with you.

By the way, nice drawing.

there are a lot of digital tools you can use to streamline pencilry, including multiplying them on a layer til they are basically black lines, cleaning up the messier bits, then coloring under them (since obviously they won't be clean and stark enough to fillbucket with them)
if you're sticking with straight up pencil you don't even have to worry about that really, what 'm looking at right here is good enough. It has high enough contrast (the main important thing) and if you wanted you could add some light gray shading
>>
>>84101376
I know there are quite a few people who do very clean pencil drawings, then darken them digitally to use as "inks", so if that's what you want to do it should be fine.

Since I was just experimenting with simplifying a character. I didn't want to spend a million years on a background that fit since I'm not posting this anywhere else. So I did some lazy effects to work him into a background I did a long time ago instead of just having him in a white void or an obviously ill fitting background like these. I was hoping it didn't come off looking too bad.

Blurring on the heavier lines just doesn't look very good. "Camera" effects in general benefit from being applied to something with a more realistic look.

Aside from that and some proportional issues the thick line weights aren't too bad.

Working on a mock up cover idea. How's this looking? I'm pretty happy with the general idea, but I know I wanna tweak the logo a bit to fit better.
>>
>>84103802
Looks good but I'd move the head up. The space between the face and logo with nothing in it seems awkward.

I'll keep that in mind, thanks for the input.

>>84103802
the light green, desaturated mauve-brown, and darkish desaturated purple should contrast nicely with the near-red brown of her hair and her somewhat orangey-tan skin. plus it looks like she's gonna eat the reader, which is always good.
i want a tiny word bubble on it giving some kind of message. like 'you taste like a comic reader!'
>>
>>84103863
Good idea, I thought having the mouth cut off half way was a little weird, too.
>>
>>84103889
That's good, though. It's a zany, off-balance image to fit the comic.
Having her be just a little bit off to one side wouldn't be a bad idea either.

Thanks! No offense taken, i'm going for a retro vibe of late 90s early 2000s edge. Everything then seemed to have crazy emphasis on red and blue coloration for contrast, Invader Zim being an excellent example with everything of Dib's being blue while Zim's equipment is red ,with purple as the middle ground of the two. I'm glad to see so many people inherently viewing this as retro or nostalgic because I was worried it didn't seem obvious enough. My various online accounts seem to be mostly frequented by ex mall-goths so this seems to be my calling.

>>84104703
I have a lot of trouble with that since I go with such a concurrent color scheme. As i said before though, that specific picture is really just thrown together as a rough experiment out of pre made resources for other things. I feel I'm able to integrate gradients in backgrounds with clearer foregrounds better in some of my other finished works, like in this animation still, but I'm still open to suggestion. The background I tossed into that gamekeeper image is around 6 months old so I think I've learned a lot more since then as seen in pic related.

From left to right: Pentel extra fine brush for outlining and typical inking, Pentel pocket brush for Blacking in large areas. [I've had this pen for years now, and the bristles are a bit worn. The ink flow is starting to get runny, and I can no longer get that crisp line I used to get when I first bought it.] Manga G pen from Tachikawa for those tiny details, and Pigma Micron 08 for typical inking.

what does uniques mean exactly? so if you have 500 hits and 50 uniques, that means each person checked about 10 pages?
or wait, is this daily or monthly or what? because i just check the site once a day

but that also means somebody could have read all 440 pages in one day.
>>
>>84105930
>so if you have 500 hits and 50 uniques, that means each person checked about 10 pages?
Averaged out, yeah. But it more likely means you had some people who just went to the home page, maybe some who read the archives in full, maybe some who partially read the archives.
>>
>>84106104

>>
>>84106353
oh yeah, that's in one day.

I've seen people say Project Wonderful can be a good place to advertise if utilized properly, but what about the other side of the coin?

Anyone here have any opinions/experience with making money by having a Project Wonderful adbox on your comic's site?
Is it worthwhile to have in the long run? Is it alright to have one while you're still growing your fanbase or will ads turn people away from your site?
>>
>>84107790
I've never heard of regular-ass ads turning people away from a site. When you go overboard with them or have obnoxious pop-ups or "turn off AdBlock to view the site" garbage, that's what turns people away.

Okay guys give me your opinion on this

Got a webcomic about an online game but that's not what I need help with, it's just necessary to understand the next part

Lets just say I have a character in my webcomic that is supposed to be an enderman. But the whole point of it is that he made this character for himself years ago, and is stuck with it even though he hates it now because obviously he doesn't wanna look like an edgelord
I love the idea but without the context people will probably dismiss it as some autistic minecraft loving 12 year old's oc which is exactly what it's supposed to be but thats not the point, or someone trying to get the wrong audience to read his comic

If you saw a character like this, would you assume something like that? I need to know this for my own sanity because that's one of the many reasons I don't post my work on /co/
>>
>>84114218
I almost laughed when I read enderman, I was expecting to read "gay" and cringe, instead I was caught by surprise.

I have to say though that just by reading you intend to have a character be enderman, and since your comic is about an online game, I was already judging your comic and expecting it to be some weeb shit full of memes, so there's that. After reading the whole post, however, the idea seems pretty good, it all depends on how you will present this. If you get your story going, if you introduce that people are free to create their own characters in the game and all that, to then introduce this one enderman guy, I think people will get it at first glance. Now, having said that, I wouldn't recommend advertising your comic with this character on the front, you want to hook people with the story before they see enderman, specially if you art isn't that good.
Also, this comic is supposed to be funny, right? How major is this character?
>>
>>84114218
The best way for people to understand it would be for the main character to explain that disdain he has for his created character.

Here's an example:

>Quick scene of MC creating his avatar.
>Pleased with creation
>Skip years
>older looking MC playing same game
>Shows contempt for his character because he outgrew it.

> I was already judging your comic and expecting it to be some weeb shit full of memes
Exactly my point. It's not gonna be taken seriously with someone like that as a major character.
I'm actually trying my best to avoid memes all together in my comic
Another thing is that he isn't really ever said to be an enderman, but its kindof implied if you see what he looks like
And yes it's supposed to be a funny comic, It Hurts actually did what I was gonna do comedy-wise in my comic but better in every way so that sortof made me lost a bit of passion for this idea
Also currently he is one of the main characters, so I basically dug my own grave with this problem

>>84114593
You know you have a good point there. I might actually do this.
Thanks anon you might have just saved me a lot of embarrassment

Here have a quick rough drawing of him so you can sortof see what I'm going for.
>>
>>84114934
Looking closely at it, I feel like it would be a lot better with smoother gradients. The thick lines and the painterly look doesn't play well together.
>>
I actually did 2 webcomics for an entire year before realizing that they were not going the way I wanted and I could just combine them
Currently I'm in the process of redeveloping the idea for webcomic so that I could like working on it more and actually have more people want to read it
I'd actually appreciate it if I could talk about some issues in development i'm having
>>
>>84115375
issues like what?
>>
>>84115380
Well one issue is I want there to be a mix of guns, melee weapons and powers but I want them to be balanced i've thought about maybe scaling down the powers or putting it in the future but i'd like to have the possibility of people being able to use mixtures of them
>>
>>84115403
>There is only one power, eye beams
>Everyone has gunbats, which are like gunblades but a gun in a baseball bat
Issue.
Solved.
>>
>>84115427
Alternatively there could be less people with powers but then that would be similar to tons of other series where guns and melee weapons essentially are not useful but I have also thought that maybe there could just be some sort of technology or magic infused into them so they could hold their own against people with powers
>>
>>84115475
You must be as tired as I am if you took that seriously. But by all means run with it. I'm going to sleep. I hope I dream of owning a gunbat.
>>
>>84115510
you know what fuck it i'm just going to make guns and melee weapons as powerful as the people with powers I still have other issues with the webcomic but that was the main one thanks for that
>>
>>84115533
Your problem might be that you are trying to apply real life logic to something that is supposed to be unnaturally powerful and broken
Just dragon ball the fuck out of it all. You can keep a story without having to have it be realistic

Why would this be necessary? Unless everyone's powers are at, like, Dragon Ball Z tier, guns and swords and shit still really aren't to be fucked with.
>>
>>84115546
>>84115558
>>84115570
I'm thinking the stakes will have to be higher and the combat more brutal for this to work this has been the main issue of what i've been trying to figure out but I think with the exception of certain characters i'll have in the series the guns and melee weapons could be just as powerful another issue I have is an update schedule as well as my drawing skills I have a cintinq 13hd but besides the actual drawing part I have no clue how it works I've thought about getting other people to work with me on this the webcomic would be set in a country in a alternate universe's world but like I said the power balance has been the main issue the original webcomic was about the entire world focusing on an international organization but that was fucking stupid and I realized starting off in one country and expanding from there would work much better

Do you guys write out scripts for your comics before drawing them? What kind of format do you use for that?
>>
>>84118631
I was trying to do a nanowrimo in the 9th grade and was having difficulty describing the appearance of characters and scenes. Then I realized I prefer drawing to writing, and I could more accurately represent my stories in pictures rather than words, and now I'm here.
>>
>>84118739
Yes. I use google docs
>>
>>84118739

What I do is, first I just write the story out like I'm summarizing it to someone. This is where I get the general gist of whether my story even works.

>Then the guy goes into the dragon's lair and he ends up killing it in a sick ass fight scene, and then he takes all its loot.

Then I break that up into scenes to see how the pacing is

>scene: the hero approaches the dragon's lair
>scene: the hero fights the dragon and kills it
>scene: the hero gets the loot

And then divide those scenes into pages depending on how much stuff needs to happen in that scene. If you've got a strict page count limitation, you should probably think about it earlier than this, (back in the scenes part maybe), but this is webcomics so fuck it.

>Scene: Hero approaches the dragon's lair
>>page 1; the hero dismounts outside the cave and hands his horse to his squire, who wishes him good luck
>>page 2; the hero creeps up on the cave entrance and, hearing nothing, strikes his torch
>>page 3; the hero stealths past countless bones and glittering treasures
>>page 4; before finally coming upon the dread beast in all its terrible splendor (probably a single panel)

And after that you can divide it even further into a written description of the page's layout and what happens in the individual panels, but since I'm a one-man team, I usually go straight to thumbnails or full-sized sketches from there.

- multiple updates per week, 3 is the magic number
- half of the cast is quirky, socially inept nerds and the other half is quirky, extroverted dream girl/boyfriend material
- primary (and only) source of conflict is relationship drama borne from misunderstandings and brain problems
- things can get sexy, but not overly sexy
- art is a mix of western and eastern aesthetical tradition, pleasant to look at with lots of pastel colors
- setting is mundane with occasional fantasy elements
- an overarching mystery plot optional but effective
- self deprecating, ironic humor is also effective
- updates are accompanied by long blog posts about recent popular culture phenomena

So I'm trying to mirror my comic on taptastic, and the file size limitations are kind of a PITA. I've been saving my files as pngs, cutting them into thirds, and reducing the width to 940 pixels, but the file sizes are around 7MB each. png is for aliased images. you should be using a high quality jpg for this kinda stuff.
>>
>>84120667
I got sort of opposite advice last time I asked around here. Could you explain your reasoning? I don't know much about image formats and such.
>>
>>84120547
I don't know if it's possible to get pngs that small. Just use a jpg - so long as you've got the original saved in a lossless format somewhere in case you ever need it, it's fine.
>>
>>84120690
it's just something about the different ways they compress data. an aliased image can turn into an incredibly tiny png, while saving an aliased image as a jpg ruins its aliasing, so png gets double points there.
but when you've already resized something so it's already made of interpolated colors and stuff, jpg has a ton of tricks to save file size, whereas png straight up stores each individual pixel of it like a glorified bitmap.

PNG is better for images with bold flat colours, with minimal aliasing and gradients. B&W or Monochrome strips work best as PNGs.

For images with lots of colours, subtle shading and painterly effects, it's better to use JPGs.

There's a guide on Tapastic here:
https://tapastic.com/episode/188280

On a Tapastic related note, I'll be starting there myself, running older "Experience the Magic of the Legend!" strips weekly, at the same time as newer strips on my main site, from the middle of next month. I'll be curious to see how that affects the page views on the main site.

The Tapastic strips have been made Safe For Work by removing the occasional F-bomb, etc. I'm down to a handful of copies of EtMotL #1, so I figured I'd reprint it as a Revised Edition with a PG rating, so it's more accessible (sellable) to a wider audience. There weren't that many swearwords to remove anyway.

I'll also launch my tip jar Patreon next month as well. I've had a couple of weeks off comic drawing to get these all sorted out, so it's back to the comics now, with around 6 weeks of buffer to finish the current storyline.

>>84120245
Definitely "The Allfather" when referring to Odin.
>>

YEah, that's a good idea, haha. I've never really done something like that before, I'll have to look up some references.
>>
>>84121116
who the hell is buying webcomics who has a problem with swears?
>>
>>84120374
It's going to be clear that it's Odin within a few pages anyway, so I'm not too worried about that.
I'm more deliberating over the implications of their relationship with him. "Allfather" is the kind of thing ordinary mortals call him, y'know? And having raven girl call him "our" implies that she sees the other as sisters/family, which doesn't get across with "allfather".
(it also puts Skalmöld's apprehension in a very different light if the figure she's afraid of is called just "father", rather than a more lofty title)
I also considered "the king" and maybe even "the boss".

>>84120999
Why?
>>
>>84121317
ohhh right right, you want to get it intimate. well then 'our alldad' comes to mind.
it sounds like you want each of them to express their different relationship with him, so maybe skalmy will be like 'oh shit the divine allfather' to herself after raven-symone says 'our father'

Did he have other honorifics? "The hanged god?" Something about having one eye? I might be remembering that wrong.

"Old one eye" feels a little too informal, but it at least doesn't give the reader a too familial impression or an almost Christian vibe the way "our father" or "our divine father" might.

Parents. It's no skin off your nose, but I'd have less qualms about selling a kid a copy of a PG comic than one rated NC17. I only needed to remove about 2 or 3 swears to downgrade the rating anyway; it's not like it was wall-to-wall "Quentin Tarantino plays D&D". (Also makes the first print run more limited edition collectible, ho ho.)
Some strips on the main site remain unaltered, as well as the digital copies on Comixology.

The print comics are sold at comic conventions, where I'm more likely to see kids with parents. I'm not entirely sure there's a great deal of crossover between those people who buy print comics, and those who read primarily online, so they're essentially two separate audiences.

Less than 1% of 1% of everyone who's ever attempted a webcomic ever makes it to that level, and an even smaller number of them can do it for more than a few years throughout the entire time they make comics.

Don't make a comic for any reason other than you enjoy making it. You will be let down if you do.
>>
>>84121795
you're telling me there's such a thing as parents who go to comic conventions but think a couple swears are bad for their kids
who the shit are these people?
>>
>>84121910
Normal people ? Not to say that the contrary would be abnormal, it's just a point of view. Some parents don't want their kids to repeat swears at all cost, and since kids tend to repeat everything they hear, to avoid the issue means avoiding the swears altogether.
>>
>>84122039

>>
>>84121370
I think "alldad" is a little too informal to be uttered by a messenger of the god of kings. Like, Odin's a loving god in his own way, but he's also the god of smacking bitches when they don't show proper respect.

>>84121382
>>84121559
I totally get where you're coming from. "allfather" was my first plan because it was something most people would go "ah, Odin!" on reading. But then I realized I was already giving that information a little later in the story and if I kept it a little more obscure, I could
A: showcase the relationship between the valkyries and their "father"
B: give the readers a little mystery to ponder until the explicit mention - if they figure it out ahead of time, they'll feel good about themselves, and if they don't, the reveal will have more impact in the later context.
So I'm not so sure it's still the best option.

>>84121624
Oh man you don't even know. He's got literally hundreds of poetic synonyms, the Norse were all over that shit.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_names_of_Odin

You're right that putting the phrases "father" in a divine context will probably give off a kind of Christian vibe. "divine father" was a bit of a kludge, supposed to imply that he wasn't their father in the flesh-and-blood sense, but which could also be read as "our father, who happens to be a god".
>>
>>84123487
too bad godfather is already taken with two other utterly unrelated meanings.
>>
>>84122981
>arbitrary mores
You may not like it, but that's how it goes. Exposing kids to swearing is viewed as a bad thing, and has pretty much always been, especially for "literate" people. Even poor, uneducated folks tend to try and not have their kids become swearing machines.
>when the fuck did that change
It didn't, you're just trying to sound old and smart.

My shitty callcentre drone job gives me a lot of time to doodle on the big notepads they give us, and I've found I'm quite adept at doodling.

Been getting heavily into comics for a while now and I'm thinking I'd like to actually do something productive with the hobby, thinking about doing a webcomic. It's essentially dry-humoured, slice-of-life observational stuff (big fan of American Splendor), since I'm never going to be able to draw superhero anatomy or anything. I want to make use of the weird snippets of conversation I hear and write down all the time.

I don't know a whole lot about webcomics, I'd planned on just doing it like an 8-panel newspaper comic (two rows of four).

What are some legit good webcomics that aren't the author's masturbatory self-made waifu biography, or 'things in real life don't work the way they do in video games' stuff I've come across over the years?

"Hark! A Vagrant", "Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal", the works of KC Greene , "Whomp!" are all pretty popular and might be worth checking out, too.

The rows-of-four thing make me think of Japanese yonkoma style SoL series like Azumanga Daioh, which might be an interesting inspiration for pacing. Not technically webcomics, but a lot are available online.

silhouettes work for me, then you just start adding some features on top of them. nobody will notice if that guy's hair and clothes all run together into a mass of black, and he just has a little exposed face and maybe a hand drawn in

I see, It's a good thing I got manga studio on the ready then. I'll see how it works out.

What's with her stubby arms?
>>
>>84124995
They do look kinda stubby, don't they?

I should have done a little better with shading...
>>
>>84125089
The issue is with the drawing. Shading differently won't make the arms longer.
>>
>>84125089
The shading? Looks to me like the problem is that her elbows are about at the height of her armpit and there's no foreshortening.

Lower the elbows and make the forearms have an angle instead of a straight horizontal line. Elbows are just about level with someone's navel.

You guys are right. I have no idea why I said shading.

I did draw her with out thinking much because I wanted a simple representation of the style I wanted to portray in the comic.

I can and I will do better next time.

>>84125269
Thanks, I'll definitely keep this in mind.

This why I keep coming back to /co/. Thanks again.
>>
>>84125356
You can actually get a similar level with the elbows in that pose, but only if you pull your shoulders up and draw the elbows back a lot.
>>
>>84125454
That's what I had in mind, but I completely fucked it up.

Shoulder's up, elbows back. Got it.

>censor
> InigoMontoya.jpg
I was away eating dinner while you were talking to some other Anon.

> i'm going to ask you nicely not to censor your damn comic.
It's already been done, and it was entirely my decision and choice to do so the whole time; no one forced or even asked me nicely to do it.

> it's not as if anyone's going to thumb through it before buying.
People do flick through it before deciding if they want to buy it. It's very rare that someone will get a copy solely on the cover alone. (Getting them to look through it in the first place is also a struggle and a half.)

> if as you say, it's only a few, then what's the point? surely that isn't even enough for tapastic to get on your case.
It's enough for comiXology to get on your case, and I dare say a lot of sites wouldn't entirely disagree with them. Here's comiXology's age rating guidelines:
https://submit.comixology.com/site/guidelines#ageRatingModal

The first three issues of my comic are rated for age 17+ solely due to having 3 uses of "fuck" as an expletive (plus one or two "shit"s etc). Without those, they would be rated for ages 9+ (for fantasy/bloodless violence); they'd be suitable for a much wider audience if not for those few instances of strong language. I figured that changing "You fucking idiots!" to "You #$@&ing idiots!" would have no significant impact on the story, and certainly not to it's detriment, so I made the changes because I would like to reach that potentially much wider audience (and the associated sales ("You sold out, maaaan!")). Only the text was changed, and it only affects the versions on Tapastic, and the eventual reprint of issue #1.

I don't see anything wrong with a creator deciding to change objectionable content, especially if it's jarring or sticks out in an otherwise completely non-objectionable story.

Topically related - here's Scott Kurtz on a PVPonline strip that went up yesterday:

it's new thread time for sure, please make one. we're gettin so close to 300

Why do you think someone removing objectionable material from their own creation is problematic?

No there fucking isn't.

I was going to humor you by listing off all the shit that's posted up there clear as day and then sarcastically ask you which one has anything to do with displaying ads on your site to make money, but I already know you're just acting like a retard to stir up shit so I won't even bother.
Fuck off.

Let this be the last thread, there's no need for anymore. Let it die quietly.

Do you need me to spoonfeed it to you?

I expect either no response as you have been humbled, or you to say you were only pretending to be retarded.
