Will Eisner was a candidate to replace Stan Lee as publisher in the early 70's. He came in to meet with Lee's boss and was asked what his first change would be. He said grant royalties to the writers/artists just like the Newspaper strip people were getting. The Marvel exec eyes glazed over and Eisner didn't get the job

It was no secret even back then that work for hire was an awful way to be treated. That's why people that suffered through it like Kirby, Adams, or Gerber became such big advocates of creator's rights

As for the question at the top: they separate business from social causes in their mind. It's like people in Hollywood are super liberal on social issues and super illiberal on business. It's partly because social causes personally benefit them or their friends, or at least don't hurt them.
