>EW also learned a little about Vader’s reputation in the galaxy at this point in the chronology, roughly 19 years after the events of Revenge of the Sith, when Anakin Skywalker lost most of his limbs and was horrifically burned in a battle with Obi-Wan, necessitating the life-sustaining armor he wears forever after. As Rogue One unfolds, Vader is still a background player in galactic politics.

Reshooting for the Afro makes little sense. To me, it's more likely that the Afro is for another movie/project that Whitaker's involved with and the reshoots are so the cast call him "Saw" rather than the character's original name.

There were two leaks about Whitaker's character in Rogue One several months ago. That he was a Clone Wars veteran and his codename/name was Castro.

Castro = Cuba
Cuba = Che Guavara
Che Guevara = Saw Gerrera

And there's pic related from the first trailer and Pablo's own words on the subject.

It seems he was always Saw but I'm guessing they are reshooting a major scene involving him but Whitaker grew an afro between shoots so now they need to reshoot all of the scenes for consistency.

>You guys don't think they got Hayden Christensen back, do you?

No. As much as I had zero problem with his work on the PT (unlike most people), he wouldn't be needed for this. At the end of RoTS, he was fresh in the suit. So it'd make sense to use Christensen (even though he kinda begged to do it) to be in it then because Vader would still have roughly had the same proportions as he did before he went in. RO is 19/20 years later. Vader's got more muscle mass now. He's grown into the suit.

>>

Just because he was mentioned doesn't mean he is still alive. Vader, Paplatine, Bail and Padme are mentioned in Bloodline, too, and they are dead. The context of where Gerrera gets mentioned has to do with looking back on the Rebellion as a whole, and how he was basically just a terrorist-to-be-all-terrorists in his time.

>Rogue One is an ensemble story, but its central figure is Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), a young woman recruited by the Rebellion to infiltrate the Empire and secure details of its latest weapon – a moon-sized battle station we know as the Death Star. Here we see her in disguise, armed for conflict inside an Imperial corridor. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy says Jyn starts as an outlaw and “becomes a kind of Joan of Arc in the story.”

>Krennic Schemes for Dominance

>Ben Mendelsohn's Director Orson Krennic is responsible for protecting the security of the Death Star project, but he's also a manipulator within the Empire. "He understands the system and he knows how things work, but he also is not above trying to bend it to get what he needs or what he thinks he wants," says Kiri Hart, Lucasfilm's head of story development. Krennic is intended to be a contrast to Imperial officers we’ve seen before, like Peter Cushing’s Grand Moff Tarkin. “Tarkin is the model for these really cool, icy types, you know?” Hart says. “Krennic runs a little hotter than that, so that’s kind of fun and it’s a little bit different. … He is unpredictable and volatile.”

Like the original Star Wars, these characters owe a debt to the two peasants from a 1958 Akira Kurosawa adventure saga. “They’re inspired, again, by what inspired George in The Hidden Fortress, “ Kennedy says. “You could even say to some extent it’s, you know, R2 and C-3PO, a little bit of that.”

I'm really liking the description for these guys.

>Keeping with the Star Wars tradition of planets with a single ecosystem, one key battleground in Rogue One is on a world that might resemble a relaxing seaside holiday destination if not for its proximity to the Death Star. That leads to a key battle in the film taking place on its balmy shoreline — blue waters and an eerie gray sky.

>A Galactic South Pacific

>We don’t yet know the name of this world, but it’s meant to evoke both heaven and hell — tranquility and war. “There’s this sort of South Pacific, tropical paradise planet that subconsciously leads into some of the imagery associated with World War II,” director Gareth Edwards says. “We went to lots of different places around the world, and one of them was the Maldives. When you're shooting Stormtroopers in paradise, you have the best job in the world, you know? You can't really deny it at that point.”

>Toy Soldier

>In one of the more intriguing photos from Rogue One, we have this image of Deathtroopers prowling on a tundra. One of them is holding what appears to be ... an action figure of sorts. The filmmakers didn't want to explain exactly what's happening here, but they confirm: yes, that's a Stormtrooper doll, a galactic version of a toy soldier. And it will have special significance in the story. (Decades later, an abandoned girl name Rey will also fashion a doll for herself — this one an X-wing pilot.)

>K-2SO in Detail

>Here's a full-body shot of the newest Star Wars droid — a security robot known as K-2SO (Kaytoo Esso), who is voiced and performed via motion-capture by Alan Tudyk (Firefly.) Compare his gunmetal gray surface to the shimmering plating of "Goldenrod" C-3PO, and you'll see the difference between a utilitarian droid like Kaytoo and a protocol droid like Threepio. Kaytoo wasn't built to socialize. He's as brusque and blunt as he is strong. "He has a very dry delivery," Edwards says. "He doesn’t realize what he's saying is very funny."

>Multicultural Cast

>In this behind the scenes shot from the Yavin-4 base, Edwards consults with some of his lead actors: Jones, Diego Luna, Yen, and Jiang and Tudyk (in his performance capture suit). The movie's Rebel team is a deliberately diverse mix from our own planet, meant to reflect a galaxy filled with a wide variety of humans from many different worlds (not to mention a healthy mix of creatures and aliens). “People are coming to the Rebellion because something has happened that has galvanized or politicized them,” says Hart. “The question just becomes: What are those triggers for different people in different places?"

Here comes the patting on their backs parts.

Actually if they'd had the budget and effects prepared they would have. Now seeing the equivalent of their rather slapdash cantina aliens in that scene would have been odd.

Of course the thing is it will always cost more to create an alien costume or even CGI than it is just tailoring a costume for a standard old boring human extra. Lucas, by the time of the Prequels when he had more cash than god, was more than happy to have all those Senate hover pods filled with aliens.

Of course it could be argued, and rightly so, that the galactic senate would have a diverse alien makeup (in more ways than one) than a ragtag rebel base, so there IS in-universe logic to it. At any rate Mark Hamill's story for those brit extras as the Rebellion whispering, "Wanker!" and "Git!" he and Harrison Ford walked by was pretty funny. Then when he told them they'd just saved the galaxy they were pretty cool about it.

I wonder how they'll use him. We've already seen Rebel leadership involved. Mon Mothma and some dude who was chewing out Jyn in the trailer. I suspect, I wonder... is he performing service as a drill sergeant? Wiping Rogue One into shape and making them work together as a cohesive team while reminding them what rebelling will cost them via his own injuries?

Basically I'm wondering if he'll have a command role or a training one. I can see him with either. He certainly lead the Onderon Partisans since the Clone Wars, but it would be fitting given he was once trained by Rex, Ahsoka, and Anakin Skywalker himself. He'd be passing on some of that to the people who will be stealing the plans and ultimately kickstarting the beginning of Vader and the Empire's end, so there's some nice thematic ties to that kind of role.
>>
>>84011115
maybe he's like Garm Bel Iblis, broke with Alliance leadership/Mothma to wage his own war
>>
>>84011115

I think they made it pretty clear as to what he is. He's a rebel extremist. He's the guy who has been leading some of the rebellion's more bloody campaigns. A contrast to Organa.

As to how he effects the group, I suspect it's going to be a sort of rock and hard place. He'll be doing his thing, Krennic will be doing his, and the main cast will be caught in the middle trying to do their thing.

I just thought of something. What if the reason the Rule of Two had to be enacted was partly because of Sith greed, but also because the Sith ended up extremely weak. Think of it like this, to be an effective Sith you can't just be angry or brash, but you have to be smart too. That's why Anakin fucked up all the time as a Jedi because he would be too pissed off but he would be sloppy instead of focused on his anger and power. What if there ended up being so many Sith that quality control went out the window and you had thousands of Anakins going around fucking up battles and conquests because they didn't know how to properly use their anger. So then Bane enacted the Rule of Two so 1: Sith don't destroy themselves and 2: so the Sith are forced to have a system of quality control or else they'll go full retard and attack the Jedi too early and die out.

USW is full of errors. Wait a year or two for a properly set-up reference book.

>Another thing they’re grappling with, Kennedy says, (and it has nothing to do with the reshoots) is whether Rogue One should incorporate some of the standard tropes of a Star Wars film, like an opening crawl, or whether it should distance itself stylistically from the “saga” trilogy films.

>“We talk about that all the time. It’s something that we’re right in the midst of discussing even now, so I don’t want to say definitively what we’re doing,” she said. “The crawl and some of those elements live so specifically within the ‘saga’ films that we are having a lot of discussion about what will define the [stand-alone] Star Wars Stories separate and apart from the saga films. So we’re right in the middle of talking about that.”

>Whatever they decide will likely set a new template for future stand-alone films. The next one, based on the adventures of a young Han Solo, is coming in 2018.

So probably no opening crawl in Rogue One.

Just thought of an interesting theory for the Open/Closed planet in Obi-Wan & Anakin.
>nucanon Revan fought in some war with a bunch of Jedi but over time he turned to the dark side
>her first evil act was taking over the Open/Closed planet and using it to kick start a galaxy wide conquest
>part of this was probably using some ion nuke to make communications off planet impossible so the Jedi/Republic wouldn't know about the invasion nucanon Revan was about to lead
>however before this happened one of nucanon Revan's followers who wasn't feeling the whole dark side thing secretly sent a warning to the Jedi
>nucanon Revan was a human with normal ears so everyone on the planet began associating their Sith overlords with Open
>a rebellion led by a Closed leader committed acts of terrorism similar to Saw and the Onderon Rebellion
>after the Jedi/Sith war the planet was forgotten but because of the actions between the human nucanon Revan and the Closed terrorist leaders Open and Closed started fighting amongst themselves
>>

Okay, /swco/. Tell me your first Star Wars movie, how you saw it, and what you thought of it.

My first Star Wars movie was The Phantom Menace. I saw it in theaters in '99 when I was 10, and the theater was so packed that we had to sit in the front row. Since it was my first Star Wars movie, I didn't have a fucking clue what was going on. Even at age 10, I hated Jar Jar.

Speaking of openings I would love if the Han Solo movie opened with a 5 minute scene of Han and Sana acting like a lovey dovey couple that just got married. Have them be on some resort planet and fuck with the audience by making them wonder why Han Solo is acting so out of character. Then have them do something like detonate some bombs nearby and proceed to hold the entire room of rich people hostage, then once they've stolen everyone's money and jewelry they'll throw some weird smoke bombs that make people forget the past 30 minutes (to hide their identities) and run off with Han attempting to make off with all the rewards. Having the movie start off with Han and Sana's marriage heist would be perfect.

Strangely enough, my favorite of the trilogy (ESB) would be the last I'd be exposed to.

Since then, I made an effort to see any Star Wars movie in theaters whenever possible, from the release of the Special Editions to TFA. Oddly enough, I missed out on the 3D version of TPM, but no big loss there

OT on VHS as early as probably 1995 or '96 (age 7 or 8). Wore the shit out of those tapes. Got some of my earliest boners pausing the VCR during Jabba's palace in RotJ. I loved (and still love) Ewoks. In fact, RotJ is still my favorite, even though I think Ep IV is the best objectively.

Saw Phantom Menace in theaters. Loved it. Didn't care about Jar Jar or trade routes or anything, because Maul was such a badass to 11 year old me.

Maybe saw AotC in theaters, don't remember. Didn't see RotS until '06 or '07 on DVD when I did my first back-to-back trilogy nights (OT night 1, PT night 2). I actually liked it a lot having finally seen it.

Much later, after the EU reset, I decided to go full-blown autist and read every book and comic that came out. Watched all of TCW finally and stayed caught up on Rebels. Because REALLY into Star Wars.

Saw Ep VII on 2nd day of release (because wife had to work ... somehow I got one of those in the meantime) and freaking loved it. Sure it's got some issues, but I was so giddy sitting there watching a new Star Wars movie. Seeing a sequel to RotJ is something I've dreamed about for 20 years, and it was fantastic.

The Art of Star Wars the Force Awakens revealed a lot.

They did a storyboard for the original opening of the film, which would involve a refitted Rebel ship tugging a dilapidated Imperial Cruiser to a Junk Planet (Jakku) in parallel to the original film.

Sam Solo (Finn), the son of Han & Leia would be with Chewie and R2D2, the ship would malfunction and they'd all end up in different escape pods on the Junk Planet.

He'd meet Kira (Rey), a scavenger and jedi adept, and Luke Skywalker. How exactly is ambiguous. Kira seems to be Sam's twin sister, left in Luke's care.

Then the "Jedi Killer" (Kylo Ren) would show up, Luke would be captured and tortured, Sam and Kira would escape with some lightsabers. The Jedi Killer was overtly a Darth Vader impersonator and tries to psychologically manipulate Luke. The Jedi Killer is implicitly Luke's son.

Then they would meet with Han Solo somehow who for whatever reason would ask them to hunt some Rathars, which would take them to the jungle planet Felucia or another like it.

In much of the art, Kira seems to Luke's green lightsaber, and Sam has a red one.

Abrams changed Sam into a stormtrooper, and changed the Jed Killer from being Luke's son to nephew.

GEORGE LOVES POTTERY
>>
>>84027979
This sounds like it has potential, but, like >>84028138, I'm not sure how I feel about Luke's son being the bad guy. Ben Solo ended up working out as Kylo Ren, I feel, because of how it meshed with the Han Solo and Leia relationship being kind of rocky and him latching onto a grandfather figure to fill the void. If it's not going to be Han's son, it just being some random force shitter who's a Vader fanboy latching onto him for a sense of identity of heritage would work better for me. It happens all the time, and is particularly noted with Neo-Nazis, which would further the parallels of the Empire and Nazis. You could also play on his resentment and envy of Luke for being Vader's actual son too.

Han randomly taking them Rathar hunting sounds like pure Lucas wtf-ery, and could easily be excised.

Finn is my favorite part of TFA, and primarily for the parts that come with him being a Stormtrooper, so I'm not sure if I'd prefer the original idea overall. Mixing and matching it would probably get my vote. At least the original has Luke and the Jedi have a bigger focus. Doesn't really touch on my major problems with TFA, which is how casually it did away with any sense of accomplishment from the original trilogy.
>>
>>84028176
Well yeah.
It rhymes.

>Finn is my favorite part of TFA, and primarily for the parts that come with him being a Stormtrooper, so I'm not sure if I'd prefer the original idea overall. Mixing and matching it would probably get my vote. At least the original has Luke and the Jedi have a bigger focus.

Stormtrooper Finn is all Abrams. The more I read the book the more it becomes clear Abrams had to cut through lots of extraneous ideas to just lock down the plot into something coherent because VIII and IX were being developed along with it.

Harrison Ford only wanted to do one or two more films, so he was slotted in to the Obi-Wan "elderly mentor who is going to die" role. That necessitated he be reintroduced early to re-endear him to audiences and have a mini-adventure with the Rathars, and put Luke into the Yoda role.

Force Awakens is really "The Death of Han Solo"
>>
>>84028193
I don't think Kylo works because of his family ties and other reasons. I can't buy his motivations, as privileged as he was, and they were barely explained anyway
.
It really should have been, as you said, some random force shitter. That way they don't have to explain why Anakin can't just slap some sense into him.
>>
>>84028361
>I can't buy his motivations

We have actual people in the real word who act like petulant vile shits for almost no reason.
>>
>>84028298
I don't mind Han being in at all, or even the Rathar bit. It was the original idea of it being an entire subplot where they go off to some random planet that I didn't like. It's that sort of shit that messed up the pacing of TPM.

Personally, it would've been nice to have both Han and Luke in the movie. Have the plot play off of the different tracks their lives went after the OT. Han shuffles back to smuggling, though without a Ben Solo Kylo Ren it'd be a little less justified, and Luke goes on to be a mentor of a new generation. Han ends up being dragged into a conflict by Luke again on one last adventure, passing some stuff off to the next generation himself before dying.

Like I said, mix and match a bit more. Keep the Kira/Reu and Luke bit, have Finn and Ben from the final version. This get's Han involved, explains his mentoring of Kira/Rey a bit more, keeps the Stormtrooper going rogue character arc, and allows for more opportunity for Luke and the Jedi stuff to have a point. Kira is the estranged daughter trying to drag him back in to help save her uncle, teacher, and his old friend. Kylo is the estranged son who went off the deep end. Keeps the real meat of the character conflict and climax Han focused still.

Though, again, the primary thing I'd want changed anyway isn't really any of this. I'd be perfectly fine keeping all of what we got out of the characters if the situation they were put in was less narratively stupid as a sequel to the OT.

There's a bunch of odd domino effects going on. The decline in the pound won't necessarily affect ticket costs, but staying in britain four visitors will be cheaper due to exchange rates. On the other hand, British exports are more profitable now for the same reason and the Japanese yen has been strengthened and their exports less profitable. Which is not so great for them, because they were looking to that to help their economy. People have already mentioned the political fallout of it with Scotland and Ireland.

So the british and global economies are not doing so hot, and there's rumblings of forming committees to investigate the potential to begin making plans for voting on secessions from the UK (and Spain is eying Gibraltar a little more intensely now), but I agree that it probably won't actually affect the Celebration plans in the short term.

>Here we see Diego Luna's Capt. Cassian Andor in the beach battle alongside some fellow Rebel soldiers — all of them human. From the original trilogy, we know a great many creatures also joined the Rebellion. Did those species line up and follow the lead of the humans after the events of Rogue One? Or have we just not seen some of the aliens who will join this battle? Director Gareth Edwards says there are at least two background creatures who fight with the squad, but they aren't major characters. "They're not necessarily front-and-center," he says, before joking: "But maybe one day, there'll be a spinoff movie."

Pointless. Stealing the scematics for the Empire's most powerful weapon is more than enough for Vader's involvement. When shit goes all FUBAR for your typical imperial, that's when you get Vader. He fixes situations that no regular jackoff can fix.
