The Orb, Dr. Midas, and Exterminatrix steal one of his eyes. Fury knows that one of the Watcher's eyes was stolen and how dangerous that'd be because it apparently records everything he's watched, but Uatu can't tell him who it was or where they went because "lol can't interfere." So Nick Fury kills him and steals his other eye to use the knowledge from it to hunt down the people that had the first one.

An anon made a comment earlier about how the quest for Jesse is drawn out or given up due to so much eventing and team ups, and while I agree I think one of the other reasons is obviously if Jesse comes back he's taking the helmet and that means no more Sam.
