Batman spent most of his episodes actually being a detective, which was a nice change of pace from whatever the hell TNBA was trying to do with the character and imo was a better direction, character wise, than BATB, though the show was absolutely the lesser.
Two seasons without a sidekick was awesome. Batgirl being a sidekick before Robin makes a lot of sense and I wish more adaptations would do that. The story advancing one year per season was a rather subtle but pretty nice touch as well. I appreciate that, at least in the beginning, they tried to keep the story grounded (think arrow seasons 1 & 2) in the sense that no villain was doing anything too physically impossible, and there weren't really any superpowers besides Freeze and - much later - Clayface. Then Poison Ivy shows up and ruined all that.

Finally, I really do like that, much like TAS, The Batman really tried to delve into every villain's motivations and humanize them. Unlike TAS, however, The Batman had absolutely no problem with showing you that some people were just plain sacks of shit; not everyone is a victim of some endless cycle of crime and immorality.

Also it had the best batmobile design.

The first was Sandra Knight, she's the OP Phantom Lady and member of the Freedom Fighters. She first showed up in Quality Comics and is public domain. She has two costumes, the red and blue is what she wore in Fox and Ajax stories after DC bought Quality and thought Phantom Lady with it.

Dee Tyler is the second to use the name, though it's established in her origin that there's a multiple Phantom Ladies as Sandra founded a spy and ninja college to train people.

After Dee was killed in Infinite Crisis there came Stormy Knight. She was only around for about two minutes before trying to commit suicide and retiring to the countryside.

New52 Phantom Lady is Jennifer Knight who only showed up in a four issue miniseries and disappeared.

There's Phantom Girl in the Legion of Superheroes but she's a whole other character entirely. Well, as different as someone named Phantom Girl can be from someone named Phantom Lady. It's Ghost Girl stuff.
There have also been character appearances in Savage Dragon and other books, and countless variations like Nightveil from FemForce. You can draw parallels to Dark Horse's Ghost, too.
A precursor might be Fantomah, an avenging force of nature who protects the jungle and was the first female superhero. Think of Fantomah to Phantom Lady as Gladiator to Superman.
She's a character who always turns up again and embodies the fashions and trends of culture at the time going all the way back to the dawn of comics.

Not really, it doesn't mean much, in theory it means you could reproduce a Doll Man comic from Quality for free, but DC owns the Doll Man character, so they can sue you for using Doll Man, even tough the story that CONTAINS Doll Man is public domain.

>>83889217
The ray
>>
>>
>>
>>83879604
Great argument
YJ had flat characters, bad characterization of the league and shit villains
>>
Dynamite Entertainment seems to have resurrected the first Dan Garret Blue Beetle along with his sidekick Sparky. In the #0 issue of Project Superpowers, characters wearing almost identical costumes are seen alongside other characters from the Fox Feature Syndicate like The Flame and Sampson. He is listed in quotes as "Big Blue" next to his sidekick Sparky. Due to copyrights Dan is not referred to by name as either Dan or Blue Beetle, but his sidekick is. In the story, Dan is caught by the Fighting Yank in Pandora's Box just after WWII. In Pandora's Box, he is left in suspended animation and emerges later as Thus, he would change his costume and go by the name Amon Khadul.

The confusion is most likely due to the Blue Beetle's public domain status. It seems that the original Dan Garret Blue Beetle (with one "t") is public domain, while the Dan Garrett Blue Beetle (with two "t's") is not. The difference in name and costumes are almost exactly the same, so anyone wishing to write about the Dan Garret Blue Beetle takes a risk on stepping on the toes of DC Comics, who own the rights to the Dan Garrett Blue Beetle. So the solution is to change the hero drastically and call him The Scarab.
>>
>>83889281
Can't DC just buy those stories if they are public domain then? Or I am just stupid and it's more complicated than that?
>>
>>83889252
They're wrong, I don't know why they posted that. DC cannot own Uncle Sam. They can own certain parts of the Phantom Lady character like her goggles and green magic ray blasts but the Sandra Knight Phantom Lady character is free for anyone to use. You want to do a webcomic? Go ahead. They'll probably only fight you if you start making money off the characters, unless you use the red and blue public domain suit and don't use the parts they own.

The story your post is interrupting is about public domain characters fighting Nazis and robot versions of DC's assembly line factory products. Are you like a canon fag or something? Why would you possibly think DC having total and complete creative control over something would be good?
So that when Johns kills them again they can stay dead forever next time? Public domain is the best thing for these characters.

He said, don't lose faith, netflix is interested they just need to see of the ratings crunch for the season 1 and 2 reruns. They are willig to bite but they need to be assured it would be a sound investment.

So /co/, do your part. Watch those reruns, drum up interest. He is also promoting his new book series so look into that too.

A, signing off.

Nope, versions of the characters have been used out-side of Dc.
>>
>>83888752
They lasped even before Dc bought them out. Erik Larsen used phantom lady and etc in books.

It's a myth they're owned fully. Only their derivatives and trademarks are not in it. But their copy right are.

and not just quality comics, Americas best comics, Charlton, fawceett.

So you can use the character but you can't call them Phantom lady or Plastic Man and you can't advertise with them? But you can have a story about the characters and use their costumes or does it have to be a totally different approach?

Is the characters in the Convergence story public domain or are those DC characters?

Not that it matters. Every time we have this discussion people act like they're going to make a Freedom Fighters comic and
>>
>>83905605
You can call them that IN book not out on cover anywhere or merch.

The ones dc modified can't be used outside of Dc. Like having Starman related to phantom lady cant be used or Earth X.

Maybe the concept of them together as a team too.
>>
>>83905605
But some characters are renewed. Black Adam is fully owned by Dc.

There's a strong chance so is Black hawks because Gaines sold half of his BlackHawl rights to Dc. And Dc owns Lady Blackhawk.

I always wonder why archive sites don't commission webcomic artists for new stories with public domain characters. Sure starting that up would be expensive but if they could set up a good system with interesting content it might turn into something.
DC would get pissy about using their characters to make money, but what if profits were going exclusively to maintain the archives and acquire better scans? Something like that would also draw together all the scattered archives into one big place.
Comic Book Plus has a lot of the golden age stories but is, frankly, a hole of a website. I mean something new and clean to make these old characters fresh and novel to new readers.
>>
>>83905994
Best to find a Devian-art site artist and pay them and write a script and send some indy publisher to print. Or do it online or a weekly newspaper script.

I would draw it myself but I have no time.

That's what I'm saying. They'd work for pennies and lolexposure and it would build up an independent wave of talent that would cycle in and out. Similar to the studios that created most of the characters in this thread actually.

Did he share some spoilers? I heard there was a pie contest for spoilers. Last year he did one for YJ season 3 spoilers.

Cram 4 stories in one book can work, even lower costs.

One could take every public domain character and make one universe with them all in it like clutter earth.

I half believe this entire series was simply how Bruce sees events, with everyone worshiping the ground he walks on.

Stardust, Shadow, Fantomah solos that build to public domain Justice League story. Boom. Time to scout for art talent.
>>
>>83907194
Jw, what would you for a big 7 roster?

Stardust, Human Bomb, Shadow, Phantom Lady, Lady Satan, Blue Beetle, and Sky Wizard.

Yours?

I wonder if the women would still feel comfortable about including Blue Beetle in such a sexual song if they knew he was a teenager.

They weren't talking about that Blue Beetle

Oh and I swapped out Fantomah for Phantom Lady, having two characters with the phantom/spirit gimmick is too much.
But Fantomah would be a great villain for the team, sort of like a Poison Ivy/Enchantress type who is raging at civilization/modern comics/big business destroying her home.

They only talked about whether someone would make him lose his virginity.

Also, Huntress knew. She told Jaime to call her in five years. She also would be his professor if he attended Gotham University.

I was glad to see Brave and the Bold give Ted a more respectful death than the comics did.

Though now I'm mad we never saw YJ Ted's death. It took Deathstroke, Sportsmaster, AND an explosion to do him in, and even then he got the last laugh.

I love BatB almost to the level of BTAS, but the finale was simply perfect. Would be a shame Coming back to it after that.

But I'd be more than okay with that Crisis musical that was brought up before.

I never could figure out the rational behind this pic. Why is GL blue?

I thought the reason might be that they didn't want two heroes both in green, GL and Fire. So... not only make GL blue but have him standing right next to also-blue Ice.

Even if that was the reason, why not change fire to another color and leave *green* lantern as green? Fire is less inherently tied to the color than GL.

Did someone think that shade looked more blue-green?

Wadda abortion that would've been. Still, couldn't be much worse than Arrow.

Are you fucking insane? Public domain means it can be used by anyone. No exceptions. More shit in our zeitgeist should be public domain, but Disney fucked that over for everyone and future generations.
