It could have been foreshadowed a lot more. Iroh had a fair bit of hinting at the White Lotus being a thing in his story line, but the other members were kind of jarring. Jung Jung especially seemed like a bad fit as is, it retroactively makes his dissatisfaction with and abandonment of the fire nation a lot less interesting if he was actually a member of a secret society the whole time he was hiding out in the woods putting up a resistance, rather than just a scarred old veteran.

Because goku, like most "heroes" are incapable of doing what needs to be done.
It's unrealistic because anyone with half a brain knows sometimes you need to kill and not just stop your enemy.

Recently I was speaking to an ex-marine I went to school with. He had his legs blown off and still has no grasp of "extreme measures"
