They already are old spongebob episodes slightly sped up today to get more ads in and keep this generations attention span

I always thought it was because of stupid broadcast standards and practices... I know a big one for Fox Kids especially was that no one could be threatened by fire or immolation, so if a character was surrounded by fire, it'd be cut or censored or sometimes the color of the fire was changed or dialogue added to ensure that it wasn't actually real fire per se.
