It's important to understand that SU's fandom is a new breed of internet fanbase that has less to do with the source of the content and more to with where the fandom is congregated.
Consider this. Homestuck, Undertale, SU, FNAF, Onceler, Don't Hug Me I'm Scared. What is the one thing those fandoms all share, the one thing they all have in common?
They come from tumblr.
I know. 'Tumblr' is thrown around for everything here, but for once this is fitting. The nature of the site, with it's follow-spread-share approach, is what causes fanbases to blow up and grow ever more interconnected. Of course, the fandoms themselves have to be bad to begin with, but tumblr as a site is what's allowed them to escalate into these insane new levels.
