"He Is The Rake" was actually a pretty interesting Creepypasta. I don't really like the art for the comic, I wish the art looked creepy like in the "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" books. However, if I hear that the comic is good then I'll get it. I'm kinda a fag for spooky/paranormal stuff
>>
That art style does NOT fit the subject
>>
>>83405097
I don't think they were aiming for a Silent Hill grimdark style. Probably something more normal to fit in a realistic setting for unrealistic creepy stuff.

Technically, Kuchisake-onna urban legends fucking blew up in Japan on the internet and caused it to reenter pop culture after the 70's scare and the slasher flicks.

So the one on the right there does actually count. Or it would if it was a western work.

For those that don't know its an old ghost story from Japanese mythology, which is Greek tier in terms of having fucking awesome monsters. Any malevolent female ghost is an onna, like The Grudge or The Ring or any of the Fatal Frame games.
Kuchisake="split mouth", the original story is a samurai cut his wife's mouth open (why varies from version to version, usually because he's an asshole) so her ghost wanders around with fan or in the modern versions of the story a face mask on (which a lot of people do in Asian countries when sick, to be polite and not spread germs everywhere). She asks random people, in some versions just children, if she's pretty. Say yes and she rips the mask off showing she's a corpse with a hanging mouth and asks again, at which point she'll fucking shank the shit out of you with superman-tier strength and no way you can fight back because she's a fucking ghost. The only way to not get killed is to give a noncommittal response like "you look average" or "you look like everyone else" both times at which point she just kind of shrugs and walks away. In some versions you can also offer her candy or something like lip balm instead of answering and she'll also leave you alone.

Rant over, hopefully someone western makes some good Japanese myth comics soon because all we can discuss on /co/ is samurai through Usagi Yojimbo and that kind of sucks.

The giving her mouth-related gifts tends to be the more child-friendly version of the story like how you can put the "hook on the doorhandle" urban legend in children's scary story books without having the boyfriend be dead outside the car. So its probably intentional to be silly.

In the adult versions, including a line of slasher movies inspired by public panic over some supposedly real sightings in subways in the 1970's, you're pretty much going to die no matter what and because Japanese ghosts tend to infect others with their curse then there ends up being a small army of super strength unkillable women in surgical masks brandishing knives who all want to ask you a question in every public place.

>>

I thought if you said "yes" again she'd do the same thing to you, and if you said "no" she just straight up murders you. The way to avoid it is to say something like "I'm sorry I have somewhere to be" and because even japanese monsters are stupidly polite she gets all flustered and leaves you alone.

>>83405784
There's a fuckload of different versions of the story because its always been one of the most popular ghost stories, I wouldn't be surprised at almost any variant.

Hell, there's even a fair amount of Japanese ghosts that are into fucking. There's like five major stories about men who marry seemingly perfect women only for a surprise. One has a mouth in the back of her head that eats nonstop, one will sleep with you every night no matter how far you travel because her soul will always be bound to you no matter if she's eating dinner at home while you are on a business trip or she's six years dead, one has a secret that she tells her husband to never try to discover and if he does she is revealed to be a ghost and usually has to leave him like a spooky Selkie, and of course the ever popular hitchhiking girl story except you don't find out she's dead until you are both in your 90's with great grandchildren at which point it doesn't really matter.

That's just the ones I know about, there's a metric fuckload of Japanese ghost stories.

Well you can't do cheap jump scare horror in comics, which is why comics are failing at it. Now if there were any competent writers doing comics, it would be a different story.

How is a slasher movie villain fapbait? Not trying to be patronizing, but most Japanese ghost stories are like if every teenager Jason killed joined him as a retard with a machete patrolling the woods and lake for people having sex to kill.

Is it just because most Japanese ghosts are female? Because that's actually caused by religious tradition, the Japanese mythology equivalent to Eve turned into a monster in the underworld who sends spirits to torment mankind. Its sort of an extrapolation of original sin.

Nah. It's probably because the majority of Japan has a habit of trying to make everything cute.

I actually have family in Japan where the house is near a shine. I'm more use to scary western stories since they aren't all about straight up human looking.
>>
>>83403690
I swear this dude does Mind control porn.
>>
>>83406555
Japanese is the best approach. Most ghosts are just like the living but immortal and playing by new rules. Like Spirited Away, except they like to wander the human world too and quite a few are really scary looking and most have an odd quirk or special rule they have to play by or some strange deformity.

Its only a handful that have the personality of Rule 63 Freddy Krueger. Mostly people who died REALLY miserable deaths that they are bitter as fuck about so the system of death and life and reincarnation says "the mortal world owes you big time for your suffering, feel free to extract it however you see fit". Some become slasher villains, some steal one of everyone's socks in each pair, some just want to drink and fight and fuck, some want to settle down and have the kids they always wanted.
>>
>>83406558
Well, I'm not the kind of guy who would cheat and considering how I only had one girlfriend in my life I don't think the exes would be a big issue. I don't think I am very likely to have another love relationship after losing a big one. About dying women tend to live longer and couples the male tends to be younger. Also I had my share of stress in my life so as long as she is reasonably healthy chances are that she wouldn't die before me. Also by your pic I assume she doesn't come back as a corpse but as a ghost and I'm okay with that. a corpse is not a person or hold its identity/memories.

Basically her soul will always be with you. Japanese ghosts tend to be far more physical than western ones, so it'd look like she's a little pale until you notice she's slightly transparent at the edges and feels a bit too cold or warm to the touch. But otherwise like normal, able to touch and have sex and eat and sleep and everything else.

Even if she's just sleeping in another room, the ghostly version will appear in the room you are in.

If she dies the soul still visits you, but reflecting what the body currently looks like. I guess if you knew of the condition (since in the story most men don't realize it until after they cheat/are widowed) and she does die you could have her preserved like a mummy so a maggoty bloated rotted corpse with empty eye sockets and no lips doesn't appear in your room and try to be lovey dovey every night for the rest of your life.

The story doesn't have a version where the body is disposed of via something like incineration though.

Still, that is assuming she dies first. Not sure what happens if you do, maybe she spends every night in heaven/hell with you. Reincarnation is the point where I think its better to just give up questioning it.
>>
>>83406684
There... really aren't any. Goatmen were a thing a while back on /x/ but I've not been in ages since it's so shit now.

The whole "Creepypasta" scene has become so circlejerky and self-referential that you don't get anything new anymore. They all just remix the same themes and ideas nowadays.

Then you have dudes like the Bogleech guy and the Creepypasta wiki who are constantly pumping the things out but have no understanding of how to write horror. It's just a bunch of vaguely creepy weirdness and then a cop-out ending like "I just started laughing" or "I ran away." There's also the way that so many of them use the idea of memetics that Slenderman and those early SCP things were fascinated with ("If you think about it, it comes for YOU! You're thinking about it now, aren't you?!")

The worst, though, is that they aren't shared through /x/ or /b/ anymore. When they were posts from a random anon it added to the appeal. There was the idea that maybe, just maybe they were telling the truth. Now they're either posted directly to a wiki (fucking lame) or they're shared through Youtube storytellers, which just feels kind of cheap.

>>83406873
In Japanese myths, the line between living and dead is a lot more faint.

You know how in Greek mythology you can physically take a boat to the underworld and the spirits of the dead have physical bodies which can feel no pleasure or warmth?
Or how in Egyptian mythology everyone who is good gets a body of gold?

In non-Abrahamic afterlife beliefs, ghosts are usually far more physical beings. Japanese myth especially where the dead are sometimes just like the living but with some extra rules, like looking like whatever state your body is in when in moonlight or having a magic box nobody must ever look inside or you have to go to the afterlife immediately without passing Go or collecting $200.

Like I said, the really fucked up ghost stories where the ghost is like a slasher movie villain are rare. Most ghosts are subtle bastards like The Shining, normal people trying to keep living like Pushing Daisies, or people who are cursed and miserable like Gollum.

Some turn into monsters or demigods too. Like Totoro, who could very well just have been a ghost who spent so long in the forest he started turning into an animal spirit.

No, the Nurses coincidentally became that.

In SH 1 the Nurses are like all the other monsters, Alessa's fears. The original Nurses were alongside Doctors and were giant hunchbacks like an adult bending over to take care of a child burn victim by sticking her with needles and cutting away dead flesh.

Silent Hill 2 Nurses were made sexual to represent the unconscious sexual frustration of a man spending most of his time in a hospital caring for his sick wife. They had scalpels because its a simple weapon to give monster nurses, but also had rusty steel pipes to be part of the theme everything falling apart and being prepared to be rebuilt representing his mental state.

Nurses appeared in 3 because you are Alessa as a young woman, but the symbolism is kind of lost. They're nonsexual nurses with guns and smeared lipstick with a creepy grin and no eyes for...reasons. Most of the rest of the symbolism is a metaphor for sex, pregnancy, childbirth, and Alessa's fears again but the new style of nurses are just kind of there.

Nurses in every other Silent Hill game and the movies have no purpose. They are just there to reference Silent Hill 2 as the most popular game in the series.

Okay, good Japanese ghost story. Undead dogs.

In the mountain and hill roads the ghosts of dead dogs congregate in packs. They watch from EVERYWHERE, looking for weakness. If you look weak or afraid, you will be torn apart by hundreds of dogs instantly. The spirits of the dead homeless or forgotten sometimes join them too.

If you trip, make it look like you are tying your shoe or looking at the ground. Whistle a happy tune, maintain a brisk but not too fast pace, DO NOT FEEL FEAR EVEN FOR A MOMENT. DO NOT STOP AND REST OR SLEEP. IF YOU HAVE TO SHIT OR PISS, YOU ONLY HAVE A MINUTE OR TWO AT BEST TO DO IT.
The hungry dog and human ghosts will keep watching you.
But there's a perk, any bandits on the road will be more likely than you to stumble or feel afraid so the dogs should keep your path clear of riff raff.

If you make it home it may be tempting to run inside where you are safe, but if you have the massive fucking balls to turn around and thank them all loudly for being your companions on the lonely trip, go inside and get some food on nice dishes, then leave it out for them and say good night then they'll guard your house for a while.

It actually ruined everything about the original game. It had none of the symbolism and it took out combat entirely. Also lets not forget that any sense of danger is removed since they literally advertise when enemies can show up. By enemies I of course mean enemy, since there is only one kind of monster in the entire game. it was a pointless game that relied entirely on the psychology gimmick.

Sturgeon's law. It's always been like this.
Horror is possibly in the worst spot because people are completely desensitized to pretty much every gimmick in the book. So horror at this point just isn't SCARY anymore in the truest sense of the word. But it can still be good as a genre. Say, I liked The Witch.

If your definition of horror is jumpscares, gore and monster designs then maybe yes. Good suspense build-up always gets to people, that's why Silence of the Lambs is still watchable nowadays unlike Friday the 13th (Yes, I said. I don't care how iconic those movies are, dear Pamela/Jasonfags, they're shit.).

I'm not denying that the past didn't have some godawful horror movies, but it also had some of the best. Nowadays we have awful shit like Slender, Unfriended, Crossed and nothing to balance the scales.

> If your definition of horror is jumpscares
That's why I said gimmicks.

Yes, good filmmaking works but there's two problems: audiences wouldn't be scared at all by a movie like SOTL these days. It's a great movie, but at this point it's not even horror anymore.

And second, the very definition of "scared" is at least partly in the audience's hands. I love movies like Inland Empire, The Witch, Alien, you name it. But these movies don't startle you, right? They're more eerie, or unnerving.

It's a slow burn kind of horror, the movie doesn't pivot around something going WHAM so you jump in your chair. When 90% of the horror audience thinks THAT is scary... that's what scary is.
>>
>>83409564
>talking shit about Black Christmas and Halloween
Motherfucker, you need to shut up. Those have a great atmosphere, were genuinely tense and frightening and were closer to Hitchcock's idea of horror than GORE NUDITY of trashy slasher movies.
>>83409683
>but at this point it's not even horror anymore.
Why not?
It has not one but two really disturbing serial killers, it's very tense, it has a horror-movie atmosphere.

>But these movies don't startle you, right?
Why should they? I'm not 3-year old. They make me feel extremely uneasy and uncomfortable, that's all I expect from horror movies.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYDxxHrlmUg
This scene is more horrifying to me than what most people nowadays think is horror.

There was the concrete thing that killed you if you didn't look at it. It basically created the whole SCP thing since it was originally stand-alone.

Most of the good ones are just curiosities, like the vending machine that can make anything.

What was the one where anybody who entered this house thought they were this 30 year old woman named Jane or something that lived there.
And at one point, withough realizing it, the Foundation sent a task force in there only for things to go horribly wrong.

I couldn't stand Nightvale. It tried way too hard, and clever actually sounded like a radio show.

The kicker, though, was how people kept insisting he was Mexican, then they insisted he was gay, and then when they made those canon, they insisted that the VA couldn't play him anymore because he wasn't gay and Mexican.

So they fired him and hired a gay Mexican to take his role.

Of fucking course, the 14 year old autistic furry deviantart audience had to come trampling along and fucking ruin it with retarded, mary-sue infested lore.

I always liked the one that was a VHS recording of a basketball game from the 90s.

Whenever the tape ended, it would restart again.

The catch was that the people in the recording were experiencing the recording, and were trapped within the confines of the basketball court on the recording, and everything would restart again once the tape ended, but they'd be aware of it restarting.

Eventually it devolved into blood orgies and sacrifices as the people in the recording went fucking nuts.

It wasn't scary, but it was just weird and unsettling.

>>
Nice thread for the most part, though i never got the appeal of that SCP stuff, while some are fun the whole idea is just way too silly, and I think the current state of it proves that perfectly.

I kinda miss the 90's on this regard, Internet made it so a lot of urban legends directly died, and while the webs have some stuff on its own (ruins.to, yavana webpage, etc) it's just falling and falling more and more into the SNS spiral of boredom and memes.

Oh, and about the comic, ain't gonna happen with those colors.

Really? Cause I thought the idea of telling short horror stories through the venue of censored government documents and reports is really clever and when done properly can be excellently unsettling.

I do agree that the freedom given to the content creators and the internet in general absolutely ruined it though.

>one has a secret that she tells her husband to never try to discover and if he does she is revealed to be a ghost

That seems to be a pretty common type of story. There was one where the wife was a kitsune that shape shifted into the form of a woman. But unlike most kitsune in Japanese folk lore who act like nymphs or succubi and just kill the men they seduce, she fell in love with him. They were together for years and even had kids. Then one day the husband saw her shape shift and she had to leave because he saw her true nature. He even pleaded with her to stay and she wanted to, but she couldn't.

Whaling is only big because Americans had the Japanese do it in the postwar as a fast way to improve the diets of the nation because the military was starving the populace to feed the army.

It became a cultural icon, whale meat became the taste of democratic free peacwful Japan. So the Japanese eat it like Americans grill steak on July 4th, except most Japanese under 40 just think of it as that gross shit their grandparents eat. The Japanese whaling industry is mostly just for old people's nostalgia.

The scariest thing in Japanese ghost stories is that anything can come to life. ANYTHING.

Anything more than a few ywars old can start growing hair, eyes, mouths, limbs, start talking, eating, etc.

Junji Ito is great, but I wish he had a little less trouble with same-face syndrome, especially when it comes to young, attractive women. It makes it hard to differentiate characters when two high-school girls have similar hair styles.

He's actually much better at drawing diverse older characters, which of course are always minor characters since it's Japan and they are obsessed with youth culture.

>unfortunately, African witchdoctors use their literal black magic to corporealize the ghost girl and chop her into bits and eat her
>the newly empowered tribe, now in control of swampwater-like powers, creates a successful swampland teeming with crocodiles, snakes and giant spiders
>the tribe flourishes
>ghost girl is celebrated each year in a contest of who can leak the most water into a tub in 5 minutes
>the winner is then eaten as per tradition
>ghostgirl reappears in the swamp at midnight on the anniversary of her being eaten, seen smiling

Man, I had a family member some time ago who had a few books with crazy creepy pictures of ghosts, monsters, and demons from all different cultures. I wish I could remember some of them. They unsettled me as a kid, but I would probably find them fascinating as an adult.

That and Japan placed a lot of importance on preserving their culture and were BIG on the idea of local legends and the spirit world as a diverse place full of more than just people who died and demons, so even stupid local urban legends about talking pickles or whatever that would be forgotten in 10 years normally would be collected by famous folklorists and published across the country, reaching as far as the Silk Road thanks to Nanban Tradars.

Quite a few people did this from the 12th century to even today. Traveling writers studying local customs in Japan is like travelling businessmen for western stories in terms of stereotypical jobs bringing a character into a plot.

I have no idea, question is if it's good. Artwork definitely doesn't look like horror comics artwork - in traditional comics horror like Hellboy or Tales from the Crypt, the way is to tell the story using simple blocky, desaturated patches of color and using strong patches of black ink to shade, chiaroscuro style - this looks really bright and smooth, I'd say.

It might be a good fit with more dream-like, surreal atmosphere, though - I think Lovecraft would look well adapted in this style.

So yeah, it can be pretty promising. It's based on established material - but half of horror comics is based on folklore and urban legends anyway, so I don't see how this is any different - even if folklore in question is much newer.
>>
>>83417823
Did it though? How many there are even games about cosmic horror? There is Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth, Bloodborne, and...? Couple indie games?

I mean, in the 90's/early 2000's cosmic horror was more popular in games - we had Quake, Alone in the Dark, Shadow of the Comet and Prisoner of the Ice, Clive Barker's Undying, Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, Penumbra games, X-Com: Terror from the Deep...
