You might want to make a Tumblr account, there are decent networks of artists there, ask and they might be willing to advise you. Just remember that some people there are crazy. One thing I can say though, is that you should study anatomy. Even if you only want to produce cartoons, understanding how the body works and is put together is essential, and can be the difference between your pictures looking excellent and residing in the uncanny valley. Even plebs like me can tell if an artist doesn't know anatomy.

I can only guess that they thought that Lapis was cracked beyond repair. With gems it seems like sufficient cracking effectively results in ego death, so I doubt that they have many qualms with using sufficiently cracked/shattered gems to power things. It's just that Lapis wasn't actually that cracked.

Well I think the idea is that the only gems used in magical item creation are criminals. So when the CGs found the mirror they just assumed it must be a dangerous criminal gem from Homeworld. In Mirror Gem Pearl mentions that she had no idea the gem in the mirror was so powerful.

I've posted this before, but I have a theory that gems themselves can take a lot of blunt damage, but break easily with point damage. Think like how it's nearly impossibly to break a car window no matter how hard you punch it, but a pointed tool can shatter it with ease.

Amethyst fell on a pointed rock, and Lapis could have been shattered by the pointed heel of a shoe.
