My family is reasonably lax, and I don't really bring it up. For all they know, I watch cartoons and read comics "every so often."

My friends have similar tastes, and I discuss currently airing anime with two of them.

My ex was into cartoons and anime, but only the popular ones like adventure time and Death Note.

No one has any idea how deep the rabbit hole goes. My friends will sometimes joke about finding fucked up fetish art of whatever anime or cartoon or something, and I'll just laugh with them. One of my friends found vore art from Bing, and brought it up with us about how insane the internet can be. I've played all three Monster Girl Quest games and am currently playing Paradox.

Hell, my mom got me into comics.

People in public? I'll bring it up if the convo goes that way but I'll probably never mention it otherwise. I have plenty of other likes and things to talk about, because there's more to me than fandom and I have few /co/ related apparel, so random people don't generally know my power level.

I actually am pretty fucking normie as soon as I step out of the computer.

Some of my friends know that I have a weird interest in furry & rule 34, but I know much worse things than that about some of them, so what the fuck they care. I kinda tend to befriend people who are rather relaxed about others being weird.

My family knows I'm really into /co/, /v/, and sometimes /a/ stuff but none of them really care, except for maybe my mom and dad to an extent. With my dad you kind of get a feeling that he kind of wishes he had more of a manly son who was into sports with me, but then he used to read comic books as a kid, used to watch cartoons with me, and watches almost every superhero movie so it's pretty whatever. My mom doesn't care that I read comics or watches cartoons but she does think that video games are a waste of time to an extent but usually doesn't say anything about it.

I'm normie as fuck socially (or at least I'd like to think I am) and the truth is almost all of the people I know/see who don't hide their power level are people I don't really wanna be friends with anyhow.

Most of the time they let their hobbies/intrests define who they are. They're the comic book guy, they're the video game guy, they're the nerd, they're the walking trope. These types of people arnt only annoying, but also usually uninteresting, socially akward, and just generally unpleasant to be around.

My impression is that, for whatever reason, girls are way more normie than guys are. So a place like 4chan really has no big draw for them. Plus, most girls I know prefer to know who they're talking to, so anonymity can be a bit of a turn off. So when you consider that, the femanons who do come here are probably just as depraved as the rest of us.

Not to be cruel, but since I picture the average 4chan user as either a fat weeaboo or lanklet, I imagine that most female users are similar. Realistically, most of us are probably innocuous, unremarkable people sitting behind a computer screen shitposting.

Majority of engineers at my school are all the people who were funny and smart in high school, and decided that STEM was the best way to get a job that's not shit. Seriously, most of the people in my social group spend lots of time with friends, family, and going out to bars/sports games/whatever.

That said, there is an element of awkwardness that never seems to go away.

Well, my not-as-close, normal, functioning young adult friends probably only know that I watch toons. Then I got some closer buddies, some I've known a long time now IRL and some I've met online and we hang around the same circles and play vidya together and shit and we're all a bunch of spergs who don't really care. But those couple of IRL friends are the only ones who really know how deep the rabbit hole goes and I know how deep their rabbit hole goes (even down to all the fetishes and pr0n) because they're my bestest of the very best friends and it's relieving to talk about all this stuff. Usually when drunk together, though.

Then again my interests don't include hentai of underage cartoon bunnies or such, and my powerlevel is fairly low in general (no toys/figurines or cosplay for instance). I think I weirded out a couple of my friends by sitting them down in front of Barbie Life in the Dreamhouse while insisiting it's a good show.

My job involves a lot of standing around not doing dick besides maybe talking to that coworker you're meeting for the first time, so I tend to meet lots of people who just ramble on about whatever their interests are and I go with it.
It's alright. I've had interesting conversations about James Bond, religion, Cuba, European and Middle-Eastern politics/economics, toys, family/divorce/women, vydia, music ... and lots of less interesting conversations about cars.

But I'm with you, I don't usually initiate unless prompted, there's no reason for me to start talking about Waltz with Bashir or Heathcliff to a stranger. Responding to whatever they're talking about is usually good enough to pass time.
