Leaving aside all the ludicrously evil things he did, and the fact he was literally Hitler (and Col. Chivington, and Matthew Hopkins, and the original Torquemada), Torquemada was an extremist who let nothing stand in the way of his crusade. You can feel at least a little bit of empathy for him, because you can see the events that led him to become the person we see in the strip and he genuinely did love some of the other people in his life, but he allowed his hatred to destroy him and everyone around him.

Something similar happens to Nemesis as the conflict between the two escalates over the series. Battle not with monsters, lest ye become a monster, and if you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.

The bit I really like about Deadlock's design is that it takes influences from Nemesis and Torquemada. He was created thousands of years before the Nemesis comic by the society that would become the Termight Empire, so you can see the grilles and knightly flourishes, but you can also see elements of the Chaos worshipping Nemesis in things like the nose spike.
