Holy shit, is that shit still relevant? How did it even ever get popular? /co/ could make better shit with just four anons and a drawfag.

"Better" isn't the wrong part of this, "could make" is. Remember Avian Adventures?

Release stuff to an already established fanbase generally helps. Have things be mildly entertaining at least, also helps.

For me I like the show, I can see it's faults but this isn't disney so who gives a shit if it has some shitty animation, weird dialog, and questionable writing choices. As long as Pyrrah comes back it's all good.

Plus RvB is the king of shitty popular things everything else is gold in comparison.

I really, realllllyy, truly do wish to see R&C come back again. It's amazing how Insomniac keeps re-inventing the same old formula despite that it's basically a collecathon game with games and still make it feel fresh and new.

Seriously, hats off to Insomniac for sticking to this series for so long even though it probably doesn't sell out megabucks like a certain Naughty Dog is currently doing.

It's great, seriously.

Serious question: Is it though? I've heard many people talk about it that way but I also hear people saying that that's bullshit.
>>
>>83210137
I think it's a show about damaged kids being used to fight unknowable monsters using slightly better-known monsters, and the interactions of the characters as they go through some shit.
I don't know what a 'deconstruction of mecha genre' would look like, or even describe, it just comes off as a lofty term that some people like to use to seem/feel smart.
>>
>>83210137
Yes(?), because deconstructions are supposed to show the downsides/"reality" of the situation to tear down the premise. In that sense Eva is a deconstruction because it shows the psychological impact of putting the responsibility of thousands of lives on the shoulders of an emotionally compromised teenager. This strongly contrasts with a lot of giant mech series that mostly focus on how cool piloting a mech is and also gloss over the stress/responsibility that comes with being a "savior" figure.
>>
>>83210184
I guess you could say it's like a mecha with more "realistic" characters i.e. Shinji isn't the brave, young protaginast but instead a scared kid with daddy issues.
>>
>>83210237
Yeah that's what I figured, yet I've had arguments with people who adamantly argue against that.
>>
>>83210237
Doesn't that just make it better-written?
Like, is a really good Superman comic automatically a 'deconstruction of superheros' if they write elements normally ignored or hand-waved?

>>83210246
That's fair I think, even for all the shit people give him for being a bitch, I don't know how much better I could've handled a quarter of that shit at 14.

>>83210237
Well, most super robot show protagonists tend not to be emotionally compromised. Gai Shishioh for example, came to terms with the loss of his body, because he always wanted to serve mankind. He realized that as mankind's strongest cyborg he could do that better than he ever could have as an astronaut. I still find it weird that his english VA was the same guy that does Dean Venture's voice.

>How did it even ever get popular?
RT already had an established fanbase, so did Monty Oum, the show's creator. When the fans heard they, RT/Monty, were coming out with something new they went to see what it was and found that they liked it because it fit their tastes. Additional fans were drawn in by the waifus/fights which, while not very good, were decent enough. After the third season things are looking better writing-wise and the animation is going to move to a better program, so now it's gone from "fun but shit" to "OK-ish".

>/co/ could make better shit with just four anons and a drawfag.
Potentially yes, but until a pilot for a competing show by Four Anons and A Drawfag Studios comes out the point is moot.

This is actually very good; especially for an amateur. What's killing RWBY's choreography is the camera work. The camera work is sterile, and it takes away so much impact.

If you took, say, Mad Max Fury Road's music and made the camera almost as completely fixed like in RWBY, it would be one of the most dull and boring things you would ever watch.

That said, I don't watch RWBY BECAUSE of the camera work. Like, you would THINK Monty would get someone to help work on the camera angles or something.

>Like, you would THINK Monty would get someone to help work on the camera angles or something.

Not really his department anymore, considering he is dead.

I agree with your point though, if your camera work is poor then your audience will have difficulty engaging with the scene, regardless of how cool the choreography is.
>>
>>83216874
Exactly. I've recently watched the first episode, and most of the cringe for me is the camera work and how it starts off like a teenager's wet dream of a story they wrote after watching the animes. But once I was able to convince myself to stop judging it like a 'professional' series you'd see on TV, I'm able to look past it and actually see the charm of the show.

Not to the level many do, but, I get it.
>>
>>83216952
The bright side is that it basically does start at the very bottom and has gradually been improving on almost all fronts since then.

It's sort of like you encounter something that first looks like hardened shit, but over time you see glints of something that might be a gemstone if you polish it enough.

Personally I'm hoping it will maintain it's popularity and become legitimately good in it's own right. It could influence a trend, as there's not many successful independent animated action series in the west at the moment (there aren't even many successful animated actions series at all in the west currently) and if it does I'd prefer the trend to be for good quality content.

It doesn't flow very well. It looks like it's a good fight scene that's unfinished, like it was stopped right before the final tweaks could be put in. The characters movements are jerky and weightless. The camera randomly moving around doesn't help. More interesting camera angles could be helpful, or at least camera movements that are more in sync with the impacts of the blows.

It's a well choreographed sight and I do think it looks cool, but it also just looks unfinished. It has a lot of the same flaws as RWBY's non-action scenes, just to a less noticeable extent because there's so much movement going on to distract you.
>>

I'm sure other people had more issues, but these were the biggest for me. Ratchet and Quark easily got the most screentime and development, leaving Clank and the majority of the supporting cast out in the cold quite often, especially the other members of the Rangers, I don't even remember their names.

I'd give it a 6/10.

I believe an important factor in making an effective fight scene is weight. There has to be a sense of weight behind the movements. The floaty balet style of fight scenes got popular because of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Matrix. Within the context of those movies they were awesome, but the style doesn't really translate well outside of those specific settings.

I read summaries of the rest of the series just because I wanted to know what happens... as of the latest book, he apparently still hasn't met anyone from the old game and it's basically just become "nice guy pretending to be evil guy while minions go about their business" with no real intention of moving the plot forward.

So his whole plan to make the name of his guild famous in hopes of attracting other players who might also be stuck has been completely forgotten. Apparently he also has shown no interest in finding out why any of this even happened to begin with.
>>
To be perfectly honest I understand that in terms of presentation, yeah RWBY has had some shit animation but it's also had some decent moments, and you have to take into account that it's also done independently without an massive budget or time.
I would just say if you want to watch it watch, if you don't then don't. If you don't know then just watch like the first three or so episodes and figure it out yourself. You like it or you don't. I'm not gonna sit here and try to convince you to watch if you don't want to be convinced.

Korra had better action scenes by leaps and bounds, dragging 3d models at one another blankly results in the stilted sterile mess that RWBY action is.
>>

>people are generally better at 2D by now then they are at 2D.
There's no universal skill level for 2D as opposed to 3D. when compared on the same level CG>2D
>>
>>83224618
It is much easier to find bad CG.
>>
aw man I thought we were having a Symphogear thread.
>>
>>83223128
Every weapon is a gun in some form
>>
>>83224645
Because it's easier for any middle schooler to obtain the tools to make a flash anim as opposed to the neccessary tools to properly animate CG. So naturally you can find more amateur 2D.
>>
>>83224765
That doesn't refute my original point in any way.
>>
>>83224784
And what was that?
>>
My main issue with RWBY is its blatant usage of MMD assets. MMD assets, by default, aren't typically meant to be used for anything other than its 'dance' choreography, which is why its fight scenes look so damn janky and weightless. There's no impact in these battles because the models aren't technologically advanced. Sure, on paper, the choreography would look fine and you could probably do a decent job with it in any other given software-- fuck, something in Maya would look better and that program is trash. I get that RT are amateurish when it comes to animation, but should have years of experience by now so it 'should' be better than what it is but it's not.
>>
>>83224807
CG can be fine but a lot of it is poor.
>>
>>83223555
Trips of truth confirmed. Shaggy fears no man, but shits the bed when encountering a hungry skellington (or lack of munchies)
>>
>>83224649
The third season was really mediocre, I hope a 4th season can bring back the quality.
>>
>>83209830
South Park is a stylistic choice. It's done that way primarily to allow it to respond to political and social events in a week opposed to waiting months like the Simpsons and Family guy.
>>
>>83224814

Dumb question but MMD use poser? I just presume that MMD is its own program or did you mean that Rwby assets look like they came from MMD?
>>
>>83224954
They ripped the models straight from MMD.
>>
>>83224932
The whole third season was worth it just for the bit where the mad scientist guy comes out of fucking nowhere and stops a missile.

>>
>>83224980

Not too surprising. Monty did make his career on using ripped game models for his animation.

would explain why his models never look beyond PS2 level of quality
>>
>>83223128
One of the main character's has a sniper rifle that turns into a scythe.

The show if pants on head wall-to-wall anime cliches.
>>
Now I have to ask, how many RWBY characters would it take to beat Hibiki?
>>
Monty was a shit animator honestly. He never really improved beyond his old Halo 2 videos from 2004; he just piled more waifus on top of it to cover up all the weightless ninja-flipping andstiff animation.

Sucks he died though.

>>
>>83226638
The first, I dunno, 20 or so episodes could be called filler, but in the context of later episodes counts more as worldbuilding. I appreciate how things sort of start slow with the viewer as in the dark about things as Steven, so when shit starts hitting the fan the stakes feel harsher than the earlier monster-of-the-week stuff.

It may not be straight-up "Tumblr: The Animated Series", but there's a certain element to it that doesn't sit well with people used to older styles of storytelling. And it's not the addition of lesbian-esque, "body-positive" or "P0C" characters; making the characters space lesbian rocks isn't as bad as turning them into emotional crybabies. Like the latest episode.

>"OMG I'M SO GAY I CAN'T STOP BEING GAY IT'S GONNA MAKE US LOSE THE GAME" t. ruby and sapphire

Take another tumblr favorite, Undertale: More blandly overt, 'tell, don't show', too on the nose attempts at drama. But I guess that's what people want nowadays: "MUH FEELS"

>>
>>83226983
The explanations of things are handed out very sparingly in SU, leaving Steven (and the viewer) to guess at much that the other characters already know. Several fan-theories from earlier on have been shown to be correct, others have been cast aside, but if you like the suspense of figuring out the things you aren't told right away, you'd probably enjoy the show.
Personally, I just ignored its existence when it first showed up like I do for most kids cartoons, but happened to watch the first two episodes with my little sister and got hooked by the end of the Light Cannon one.

So funny thing about this, it reminds me of that moment over on /a/ where everyone was losing their shit (or not, you really can't tell over there anymore) about how Miyazaki suggested that anime artists don't actually know how to draw anything but anime. They see anime, they immitate anime, make their own version of anime, but don't focus that much on how to draw an actual human being, with correct proportions and everything.

I'm going to guess because nobody on RWBY's crew knows anything about how to fight. They've spent years watching video games and cartoons and other people fighting in videos, and they can make a really cool looking fake fight, but they can't actually make a fight that convinces you there's bodily harm going around. Shit, remember how much work went into Avatar, and their fight scenes? How just about everyone on the project spent time learning the different fighting styles and then applying what they actually knew to the final product? That's why RWBY's fighting is so weak. It's years of watching a punch, and knowing what a punch looks like (or sword, or gun, fucking whatever) but never actually taking the time to learn how the body feels and reacts while in motion. It makes the tripple flips and the wild spinning scythe moves come off as kind of chintzy and not very impressive.

On an unrelated note, I always thought it was funny how they had to crib items from other projects and people (like how catgirls sword has GLOCK written on the side), and how the background is flat and uninteresting... but if it's a robot, a space ship, a swordpistolskateboard, something with cool technology shit, you can see they spent a shiload of time on it.

Pretty much. I even think the fights "improved" in some ways. They were less crazy and flashy, but had more character interaction and emoting in general. It feels less like Character XYZ is a DDR demo of themselves beating up another DDR demo, and more like a cartoon character encountering a fight. It's hard to explain and I think I'm in the minority of RWBY fan opinions
>>
>>83232522

This was their first and only fight and I think their only other interaction was seeing each other from afar for like 5 seconds in the previous ep. Pyrrha had no idea she could even do that until she did it. The audience did because she'd fought other characters previously but they'd never met before.

They said they dialed down the coolness of the fights since Monty wasn't doing them anymore to rebalance things, which is why RWBY suddenly comes off as a lot weaker than they were previously. The original plan according to Shane had them not losing the finale nearly as badly, with Yang and Pyrrha coming close to winning but not quite pulling it off instead of getting stomped, and Ruby actually defeating Roman instead of getting beaten and lucking out.

I'm not sure this was a good choice though, because for one it makes it look inconsistant, and for two it's gonna be really hard to justify RWBY taking them down after being so badly outmatched when it comes time for the bad guys to lose. Or at least in a way that's satisfactory instead of the plot just saying ok they can win now because the dramatic loss scenes happened last volume.

That's because while the aforementioned disintegrating arrow power wasn't, her death itself was a total asspull (in the sense of trying to write a decent story).

How high are your standards for cartoon fights?
In this webm the blows have impact, and the action is readable, that's a whole lot better than what a lot of other shows manage to be honest.

If your standards only allow you to call a fight good when it has:
1 realistic lasting damage, where combatants will become noticeably weaker with every blow (almost nothing has this)
2 Impactful blows that feel like they carry force
3 Tension
4 Readable action
Then sure, I'd agree that such a fight will be good. But if those are your standards, then 95% of fight scenes in anything will be garbage, probably more.

Take this fight scene from RWBY for example.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RhaxzYsms_0

It's fast, but comprehensible, and because of continued motion you generally have a pretty good grasp on the perspective and the positions of characters.

Will at certain points it's a little too fast for its own good, it's perfectly serviceable and definitely not "bad".

It also doesn't make the mistake of ending the fight with a big super attack (this almost always breaks tension), and the music does a pretty good job of setting the mood.

If you want bad fight scenes, look at DBZ. Symphogear and RWBY, while definitely not perfect, have a whole lot more to offer than the general Schlock DBZ inspired so much of.
>>
>>83239606
I mean, yeah, that's exactly true.
You can put a little maymay arrow in front of it but that doesn't suddenly make it invalid.

The entire show is clearly going for style > substance, just look at character designs and weapons.
>>
>>83239073
I never liked this short nothing in the previous movies before or after made this seem believable to me even if it was one of the strongest jedi.

>"realistic characters"
im not saying i would know what piloting an eva is like
And while its good that the characters were given these characteristics, i can honestly say that ive never met anyone, even at the characters ages (14?-16?) that are nearly as wimpy aas shinji, as much of an uncontested bitch as asuka, or as blatantly despondent and weird as rei (although the show explains why rei is like that (i think))
>>
>>83238194
i thought it was an eva thread
>>
>>83241520
I'm surprised you forgot to mention music and effects also helps make a fight dramatic. You can have all those traits above but if you don't have good music the fight will be forgettable.
>>
>>83242464
>effects
I mean sound effects.
>>
>>83242464
Yeah, I had them in my mind but I forgot to include them while listing them.

Music is important as hell. It doesn't even need to good as long as it fits the scene well.
Take Metal gear rising for example, the music is all mediocre linkin park type stuff, but it fits the fights so well that you get really pumped up.

And yeah, sound effects. I remember a bunch of times where a sound effect really shook me to my core, that stuff can be really powerful in establishing a good scene.

I'm not fight critic, but I have no qualms with RWBY's fight scenes. Everyone seems to be harping on about how it's not realistic, but that seems like a pretty weak complaint considering that the show is so heavily focused on looking kickass rather than looking realistic.

It's a show where people use improbably kickass weaponry to fight against calculating villains, soulless beasts, and master criminals. I'm ok with that, and if you're not, then you're probably barking up the wrong tree anyway.

Also everyone has what is described in show as a force field until it is explicitly shown to be depleted. Of COURSE the hits won't be heavily damaging.
>>
>>83245292
It's not that it doesn't look realistic. It's that it looks awful.

to be fair, even in the Genndy series they spelled out why Grievous fucking jobbed so hard.
>He did not have surprise and fear on his side
>He had been fucked up by Windu (because he neglected to have those things against Windu)
>Obi was is described as the absolute master of Soresu, the defensive lightsaber style, Dooku's instructions stressed Grievious focus more on unconventional attack and such
>He fucking let himself get challenged to a dual

Still not excusable but I can sort of see where the line goes.

>>
So this one was made by the same company, but for a different series. I thought this was a pretty good one, and you have to admit it feels at least a bit more weighted than RWBY's, overall.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GkkeLzbVuHI
>>
To people who've seen both, would you say RWBY Volume 1 and 2's fights were better, or were Volume 3's fights better?
>>
>>83254549
It's a mixed bag.
Best fight in the show is hands down Pyrrha vs CRDL, which is season 2, but season 2 also had Breach, which is an entire episode that's basically just one big fight.

If you really had to average it out, then I´d say it´s S2>S3>S1, but every season has at least 1 really good fight.
>>
>>83254549

It honestly depends on what you're looking for. If you want the crazy balls to the wall flashy Monty Oum style fights then yeah 1 and 2 are better, but those are more often than not all style over substance.

The Volume 3 fights by contrast aren't as stylised and there's the infamous joke fights of SSSN and JNPR's tournament matches. But it feels like, I dunno, like more stuff is actually happening in them.

The reason its taking so long is honestly because the story takes place from multiple perspectives. Most of the time from the perspective of people who aren't members of Nazarick or Ainz.

It can feel very padded out at times because the author gives the characters fairly detailed backstories and gives in depth glimpses at their thought processes and interactions with other characters.
