A better question would be why they need to be secret in the first place.

Is it to prevent enemies from knowing where they are? In that case, they are doing a fantastically terrible job at it. They rather glaringly display their magic circles, which is pretty much an identification fingerprint of magic. And this, of course, ignores that the enemy has spy-magic, knows where they all live, and are frequently followed around by the bad guys.

Is it to protect people around them? But the people around them are frequently attacked and kidnapped just for associating with them. Knowing that they have magic or not knowing wouldn't matter; the enemy is certainly going to have better knowledge of spellcasting than any friends the cast has.

Are they somehow protecting people themselves, from doing something stupid by knowingly talking to magic princesses? But that doesn't seem to be a practical danger at any point. Random people don't seem capable of magic, regardless of training, and outside that one book there wasn't anything dangerous that they kept around. Heck, some magic items (dream crystals/music box) seem incredibly dangerous for the ignorant, and it would be better for someone to be watching out for Iris in that case.

Sure, I know the real reason (it's part of the genre) but it seems very silly the way it's used.


Also, it seems like the Wednesday storytime threads were likely what killed off the last thread. Not that it's too big of a deal; Friday to Wednesday is an amazing run for a LoliRock thread.

Speaking of which, the political system of Ephedia seems to be a monarchical feudatory. France annexed a bunch of Holy Roman states and their leaders retained the title of Prince with the King's permission. A lot of these were seceded to the French monarchy in the 1700s and they became things like counts.

Princess was generally only used for the wives and female heir apparent of princes (or the heir's wife). Obviously this isn't the case with Xeris, at least.

Part of that is because the whole "is for ___, not for sexing" is a meme and most memes are, well memetic. They're basically repetition of an original phrase which is, in some way, humorous. As such, they don't really translate to another language well - part of the joke is repeating what's been already said.

The other part is, at least for me, I'm not familiar with the words la chantant or la sexe in French, and so wasn't sure how to apply them properly. Different languages have different rules in how words and terms are used. "Not for the sex" can have a specific concept or meaning in English, but there's no guarantee that a similar phrasing would even be present in another language.

And if it's that easy, then why not do so?

Of course, we know the reason: it's easier on the animators and everyone else to just draw all the characters the same, so that they only need to remember and get good with one character design rather than dozens. Then, they just swap the head and hair to make the different characters. But don't pretend like there is some sort of vast difference between body types in the LoliRock cast, or that making them the different would be some exceptional hurdle to overcome.

This is easily one of the most entertaining fights in the season.
Really hoping the higher ups give em slack for more weapons in season 2.

I think watching Carissa going bongo on everything might be more amusing. Lyna seems to rely more on her telekinesis to do her work, which would likely get repetitive - it would either hold enemies up in the air, or just move her weapon around if she can't. (Given the size of most, she probably won't be able to.) I suspect that Lyna would end up mostly doing the same trick in most fights, kind of like how the team relied on Auriana's crystal wall spell for defense in most of Season 1.

I actually thought that it was interesting how the fiery hothead was basically the defensive protective fighter, while the calm collected one was the in-your-face and frequent ranged attacker. Kind of interesting to see that "reversal" of classic combat roles, and how it worked so well anyways.

Actually, Iris (as leader) was meant to be the offensive, in-fighter, which is why her one signature (Cristempactus) is off a punch. Talia is the tactical fighter, uses illusions pretty often, flexible ranges.
The team had the 3 split in that way (Offense, Defense, Illusion/Tactics) more so, but I think either the broadcasters or the writers kind of watered the roles down. Auri is still the most easy to see since she shields all over the place, for defense.

Iris seems to be more the idea character of the three, oddly. She's always the one hanging back, asking about options, or trying to figure out a different method of attack. It sort of makes sense, given that Talia/Auriana are experienced fighting together and know what they're doing, while Iris needs to learn to fight and to learn to work with the other two. Also, her asking questions makes sense because she frequently doesn't know as much.

Although I can see your offense-defense-tactics roles a bit more later in the season. Iris is less learning at that point and more frequently attacking. I'd probably need to re-watch a few fights to see how Iris and Talia end up dividing responsibilities in those episodes.

I do still like the spunky, hyperactive, go-getting character being the defensive fighter, though. I'm a fan of defensive fighting, and it makes me smile that she's not just another shy bookish care-about-everyone type. (Not that I dislike those types, just wish they weren't always the barrier-crafters in other shows.)

Well, Miraculous is a great series as well.

Lyna more uses a chakra than a yoyo. One that she manipulated telekinetically, so she can swing it around like a yoyo, but not quite the same thing. You can't tie stuff up with a telekinetic "string" like you would with a yoyo, for example... not that Lyna needs help disabling small stuff.

Although your webm could work as well as a chakra as a yoyo, I guess. I just don't know if LoliRock S2 will be going to Power Ranger route that way.

Ah. I see what you mean, with overall style. Iris is the most ingenuitive by far, though the others get their moments (Auri with the whales for example) once in awhile. Depends on who the writing is focusing on...which is usually Iris. Largely because she doesn't have a 'box' to think in as far as magic goes, and is more familiar with earth things that can be used in a pinch.
As far as magic types goes, is where my first post refered to. Iris was designed to have the offense, as the leader.
Lyna's type is floaty stuff, and Carissa could be very in fighting, very slow but powerful stuff. Maybe using her weapons the most and using magic to enhance hand-to-hand.

Lyna is the only one who can fly (by her own power, at least) and so that might become significant with the five fighting as a team. I also suspect that teamwork will be something they need to work on as well. Iris was fairly open to working with the other two, but Lyna and Carissa hardly work together very well; working with three other new people is probably going to be difficult for both of them.

Alright, I know it's a kid's show, but I can't help but cringe when I watch this. I do not claim to be an expert at ALL, I've only done very surface-level research and I'm an amateur in fencing, but hey it's 4chan so I'll talk like I know something.
I've also only seen episode 1
Weapons: Praxina, Iris, and Mephisto all need basket hilts since they don't wear something to protect their fingers. Basket hilts are basically just superior to crossguards in every way since they wrap entirely around your hand.
I won't comment on Auri's whip because that's obviously part of the shtick, and honestly if they can make it at least look like it's working I don't care. As for Talia's quarterstaff/scythe deal, I don't want that weeb shit in my French cartoon. And in general scythes are just not a good idea in five hundred and one ways because the pointy end faces towards you. Honestly you could have just given her a regular quarterstaff and that actually would have still fit her character because it is incredibly effective weapon in the right hands, and it's also a pretty conservative weapon. This crazy ass fuckery does not fit with Talia.
As for Praxina's dual wielding: It actually can be done. I've seen people do it. It is REALLY hard though and you basically need to always be on offense and dodging shots when using that type of technique. However, she's not even using swords. Those are modern fencing needles. Actual swords in actual fencing have some width to them and an edge, they are never just all pointy. A sword made like that wouldn't do ass for you, it would bend and break and the lack of mass wouldn't do shit.
Concerning the choreography: Taking into account that these girls are obviously not supposed to be highly trained in melee, it makes sense that they're not gonna do everything they COULD do.

It's also worth mentioning, they don't use the weapons as often as they could, with the exception of Auri's ribbon (which as you mentioned, part of her schtick). Talia usually keeps hers in quarter staff mode, actually blasts a monster or two from a point-and-shoot with it.
The scythe pops up on rare occasion that she's going close.

So watching Talia, Auri, and Praxina fight, I puked. They have this constant start/stop rhythm where they literally pause for for full seconds before continuing the fight. There's also a point where Auri gets her whip around one of Prax's arms, and she takes the time to make her other weapon disappear, shoot some crystals at Auri, then re-materialize her weapon to cut her whip. In that entire span of time, Talia just sits there not doing anything. She could have easily taking advantage of Auri's man-handling to parry the weapon or just knock it out of the way and smack her scythe blade into the back of her head or just wrap it around her neck and force a surrender (because this is a kid's show and they're not behead a character like that). Also, if Prax just wanted to cut Auri's whip, she could have just cut her whip right there instead of firing her little crystals at her.
Moving on to Iris vs Mephisto, this was actually easier to watch, especially with how Mephisto handles his weapon. There are moments where they swing their swords way out to the side for some reason (you will NEVER see that happen in an actual fencing duel, a lot of the force is generated from twisting your hips instead of throwing your entire body into a swing), but when they're really going at each other they keep their blades in front of themselves, and there's this constant fluid motion as they block and parry each other as they're both trying to land a shot. Though they do seem to be just bashing their swords against each other rather than actually making an active attempt to land a hit, and I don't know about how much their blades have solid clashes (obviously sparks never happen but what the hell it looks cool). There seems to be a weird pseudo-parrying going where they're still taking a lot of the brunt force of the opponent's weapon.

Well considering they have magic that can create projectiles, I don't see why they would. If you can keep your opponent away from you and fire crystals at them from behind a magic shield I'd take that over a sword-duel any time. Sword-fighting is fucking dangerous.

Now both Mephisto's and Iris' weapons seem to be a hand-and-a-half sword (which I now realize means these two should have some sort of armored glove or gauntlet instead of basket hilts, unless you can put basket hilts on a sword like that), ie a sword that is designed to either be wielded with two hands or one. Mephisto is the only one of the two that takes advantage of this since he doesn't have a shield, you can see him double-handing the hilt multiple times and using the sword like a lever on a fulcrum.
What I did like about Iris though is she kept her hand she wasn't using behind her at all times, away from where the sharp metal objects are flying around.

Now, obviously all of them should have some sort of helmet on them, along with armor, shit covering their fingers, and Prax, Meph, and Iris should be using shields, maybe even Auri. Sword and board (or whip and sword) is honestly one of the best ways to go into a fight. A shield will trump polearms, two-handed weapons, and projectiles any time of the day, as long as you know how to do it. There's also a lot of stuff about footwork and how they throw a lot of their shots, but I'm already taking this way too seriously as it is.

Well, I think the largest problems with fight choreography is probably budget constraints. The show was made on cheap (generally speaking) and there were about two fights where the girls really pulled out weapons to use. Most fights involved dodging around and aiming magic crystals and things. As such, fight scenes probably didn't get much focus or attention, so finer details (like pacing) were likely unknown or ignored.

Also, note that a realistic sword fight (like a realistic martial arts fight) would probably be rather dull to watch. It would involve some fairly technical details as to why one technique would trump another, and involve a lot of close combat and locked swords. Banging swords together or dancing around with dual rapiers is silly, certainly, but it's also flashier and easier to see.

As for experience, Talia and Auriana are from a place that was violently taken over by force and have been fighting in a resistance movement ever since. Praxina and Mephisto are directly working under the main guy who violently took over said place, although it's not clear if they were involved in said takeovers. So I would expect Talia and Auriana to have combat experience, and possibly Praxina and Mephisto as well. Iris is untrained beyond what she's learned throughout the series; that's apparently quite a bit, although her lack of experience would be understandable.

On the other hand, they're mostly trained in magic, possibly with weapons as a secondary recourse. There's not much to indicate that they are trained with swords and spears, outside the fact that they're willing to pull them out on occasion.
