I am not even a Marvel shill, but every negative review on Civil War is just objectively wrong. Disliking it is okay, but why people are so stubborn to admit that it's a genuinely well made film? I mean, Mad Max won couple of Oscars.

Okay but Mad Max had brilliant cinematography and great practical effects, comparing yet another generic MCU blockbuster to it is farcical.

Pic tragically relevant.

Also Tony has/had Pepper and Steve has/had Peggie.
Huh I just noticed those names are kind of similar, anyway the latter is made more unfortunate not just because of her death but the fact Steve could tell Sharon was attracted to him and really only gave her a pity kiss as thanks for how far she was willing to go to help him and the others.
So even if Steve learned Natasha was similarly interested he probably wouldn't act on it until they were at a point where he felt he had strung her along too far.
Which sort of happened in The Winter Soldier but she also kissed him there and moved on so they clearly have an understanding.

This guy is a tool.

Steve Rogers is DESPERATE to save Bucky. Why? Because once Peggy died (an artful piece, that) Bucky is the only connection Steve has to the world of his birth. He time-traveled 60 years into the future, and he's...so lost.

It's not even that (I actually liked The Babadook, sue me).

It's that film critics are so tied into the idea of "it's all subjective anyway" that most critics really don't care about their own opinions anymore. They'll follow trends if it seems to be popular; they'll go against trends if it gets them views. All they really care about is staying in the game, and they have the nerve to criticize filmmakers for roughly trying to do the same thing.
>>
>>82943048
>Wouldn’t Captain America: Civil War be a more interesting movie if Captain America (Chris Evans) and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr) fought over, say, the affections of Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson)
Fuuuuuck that.

God if anything, that's way too boring, petty, and pedestrian. Heroes like Cap and Iron Man stand for something. It's infinitely more interesting that they fight for ideals or beliefs that they wholeheartedly believe in.

Not to mention that it sends the right message. It's not healthy at all for people to fight for someone's affections like that. These movies have a lot of appeal for children and you wouldn't want them to think it's okay to obsess over someone like that. Superheroes have always been about setting the right example.

It honestly depends entirely on how old the performers look, more than anything. Boob-size also legit counts. The reason they looked for Widow's approval is she was the only one there at the time from the original crew. Hulk and Thor are off doing whatever, and Hawkeye didn't jump in till the middle. They respect her and by having her approval, it makes them feel they are in the right.

That someone would want to change that into "they want to fuck her" is kind of insane.

>They all have the same fucking directorial style and tone is what I'm saying.

...HOW IS THAT WRONG?

They are THEMATICALLY SIMILAR because the source material is THEMATICALLY SIMILAR.

This is how comic books have been written for decades. Of COURSE they're thematically similar, they share a continuity!

Serious question, have you ever read any comic books?

Marvel Comics has SO many stories to tell. They're holding up FOUR global-class movie studios (to varying degrees of success), and they're running, what, ten different television shows?

And even with all that, they're not making a DENT into the stable of stories Marvel has to tell.

So if they've decided to put ten or twenty movies into a shared continuity, it's not like that's all they have to work with.
>>
>>82947221
This is simply not true.

I went back and watched the first Iron Man the other day and it stood out how different it was to Civil War, and Guardians, and even Iron Man 3.

Every MCU movie shares themes and arguably a certain formula, but they definitely feel different if you're paying any attention at all. IN FACT, in my opinion I think they're sometimes too different. It's jarring to have one movie with a based composer and the next with some schlock generic score.
>>
>>82947447
Lemme let you in on something: 99% of Marvel comics (and DC comics, really) are absolute garbage. And therefore, just because it's like the comics doesn't mean it's any good.

And secondly, a good director has a voice. Marvel movies all have the same voice, because the real driving force behind the films is corporate. It's not bad per se, it just turns the movies into a huge case of SSDD. If that's your thing, knock yourself out. It just ain't my poison, capisce?

>Serious question, have you ever read any comic books?
Not a lot of Marvel, no. I have read quite a bit of comics though.
>>
>>82947693
I'd honestly say Iron Man would be the exception, but that's just my totally subjective appraisal, so ymmv.

Yes, didn't you see the reaction to BvS?
>>
>>82943048
OK... what?

The whole point was the emotional conflict. You get to the end and realize... there never was any super soldier techno army. There was just the revelation that sparked revenge and conflict.

There wasn't a wave of tech jargon. There was a clash of ideals and viewpoints. This movie was entirely driven by emotion and will.

Just because they didn't add a romantic subplot doesn't mean you can say it didn't have emtion or desire.

While I disagree with the gay rom com idea the movie really could use some emotion with the characters acting out of spite, desperation or something to give these movies a little humanity or passion they're currently so sterile and cookie cutter with every character being the badass who makes quips

>>

What are you talking about? Tony seeing his parents die for one was pretty emotional.
>>
>>82955349
>really could use some emotion with the characters acting out of spite, desperation or something to give these movies a little humanity or passion they're currently so sterile and cookie cutter with every character being the badass who makes quips
Bucky hesitating to trust Steve, Steve standing firm to prove his undying loyalty to a friend who couldn't even remember him and both running for their life because the world was closing in on them wasn't desperation? Not elaborate enough? Should a violin piece and tears have accompanied the scene?

The defeat Bucky has on his face when he's sealed inside an air tight container like expired fish?
The horror and fury Bucky has when he realizes Zemo is about to manipulate his already traumatic mind fuckery to hurt more people when he thought he'd escaped all that? When he thought he was safe with Steve?

Or how about after all this Bucky is in the Quinjet with Steve and having lost all hope just admits that the world is never going to see things how Steve does or care that Bucky's been MKUltra'd and ultimately they have to live alone with the repercussions and memories of what he's been made to do. Should some flash cuts to the victims been added to hold the audience's hand?

If you've seen Manchurian Candidate, 2004 remake with Denzel if you can't be bothered with the book or first movie, that Tony references this is what Bucky and the other Winter Soldiers dragged around by HYDRA went through. Yeah I think among the inhumane treatment the victims were subjected to there's a little humanity there. If you didn't catch that sort of thing I think it says more about the audience's empathy skills once action pops up not the emotional material in the script.

It's like seeing the original Robocop do badass scenes and suddenly deciding he's too cool to care about when they explain he's a fucking brain in a jar with a face stapled on who lost everything.
>>
but the entire driving force behind the plot was a love triangle between tony, steve and bucky

Most of the things she does can be done by Maria Hill, it seems like she was created just so Steve could have a love interest.

Civil War was centred on desire and emotion, wasn't it?

The desire to keep your bro safe at all costs.
>>
>>82956731
Well if you know your character use 101 you consider she's related to Peggie so it's easier to tie her loss with Steve's, and use the fact she feels she owes Steve and Peggie to drive her character whereas Hill was just sort of following orders from Fury or helping him out or whatever during Winter Soldier.
>>
>>82956852
Civil War's whole theme was about how emotion effects people, and about friendship and how Cap is able to bond with people much better than Stark
>>
>>82956865
>she's related to Peggie
But that's the only thing she has going for her doesn't it? Does her character even develop beyond that?
Please be patient with me, i'm genuinely curious. I'm a DCfag and the only reference i have are the Marvel movies.
>>
>>82957160
I'm not sure if I can do a good job of explaining what the movies do through all the tricks of storytelling but I'll try.

Well, yes, the Peggie relation is the strongest connection between the two but Sharon was also assigned to go undercover and watch Steve for some time before the beginning of The Winter Soldier. She pretended to just be a conveniently single, attractive and friendly neighbor in his apartment and all that entails whenever she met Steve.

Steve became rightfully paranoid however after Fury was shot in his apartment and Sharon comes sneaking in with a gun, but later she needed him to trust her so she compromised her cover and confessed the truth of who she was and why she was there. Mostly clarifying she wasn't with HYDRA. He understandably wasn't pleased about why she was hawking him either way since he was fed up with the lies, distrust and deception eating away at the country and its people.

So she felt she had betrayed the trust of the man her aunt had lauded the character of all her life, then she saw that character first hand as he literally brought freedom back to America by giving a True Patriot's speech that inspired even the lowliest member of SHIELD to choose death before dishonor and then Steve sacrificed himself to take down HYDRA.

She was understandably moist ever since, hence her eagerness to be more of use to him. And all that entails.

I agree her presence seems like a needless detour in the events of Civil War itself, but I guess it was just to tie up a loose string between them since Maria was shown doing fine with Fury in AoU and the Russos brought back everyone else still kicking from TWS into CW (Crossbones, Widow, Sam, Bucky, etc). Their little kiss scene also served to complement the contrast with Steve's old and new friend.
Bucky and Sam despite their dislike for each other both approve eagerly of Steve's happiness.
If Maria was there she'd probably just salute and walk away and we don't get that chemistry.
>>
>>82957712
So i guess we can conclude that she's just there so she could be a love interest for Steve? At least in the movies. How about in the comics? Does she play a bigger role besides her relation with Peggie and as Steve's lover?
Thanks anon, i appreciate the explanation
