>>82869972
Honestly the industry is fucking built to fail.

Something so expensive for so little entertainment, and after a few months those individual floppies get put into a bigger book that is more worth your money.
But you can't have the industry be built on trades/OGNs since floppies are needed to get everybody by month to month and readers can be apprehensive to buy a 20+ dollar trade/OGN by a creative team they don't know, even if they are characterfags.

I mean it won't go away completely since they're IP farms, but consistent healthy growth just seems so difficult.
Trades are growing just fine, but relaunches and variants are muddling the floppy growth department.

>>
>>
>>82871320
>>82871373

You're being childish.

The dilemma of piracy is that piracy at a small scale isn't bad because a pirate would not have otherwise paid for the product, so a pirate does not represent a lost sale.

However because of how small the comic book community is if you read a comic and enjoy without paying for it you are contributing to a lost sale.

For instance, the Wicked the Divine is lucky to break 12,000 issues a month. Give there are hundreds of millions of Americans that's almost like the comic doesn't exist.

The movie will be seen by millions, the comic tens of thousands.

>In both cases, they were never intending to pay for it. Why is one a lost sale and the other is not?

Realistically, Marvel is in a lucrative position that they will never go out of business. They could publish at a loss for a century and still stay around.

However, a heavily pirated comic means that DC/Marvel/etc will discontinue that work and not produce more.

Nextwave is a comic that died on the vine despite universal praise.

Gotham Central, one of the most critically praised comics, barely sold and DC only managed to make a profit on it years later.

Why does this follow? If there are x number of people willing to pay for comics and y people unwilling to pay for comics, why does it matter what percentage of y decides to read them? The paying audience is x, and was always x.

Because sometimes x gets greedy and converts to y.

And for a comic where a few thousand is the difference between continuing or cancellation, x matters.

I don't really get how else we're supposed to buy comics.

I'm not going to pay $4.99 plus tip to read 1/6th of a story I may not even like. If I read it and it's good and I find it's worth owning, I'll buy a big trade so I have the entire story on my shelf I can re-read any time. That's what I did with Invincible thanks to the storytimes on /co/.

If anything, the most i'll want to spend on floppies are a dollar or so for used ones, preferably less, which I use for the same reason as the storytimes. Read a bit, see if I like it. If so, track down the rest of the floppies and get the whole collection on my shelf, or get the trades. If I don't like it then it's no big deal, I just wasted some pocket change.

It matter specifically in terms of cancellation. If a book is making gangbusters then yeah pirates aren't going to make a huge difference, the book will continue regardless.

But if a book is struggling and you like it, why not buy a couple floppies or trades if you like the story enough to read it on pirating websites so often?

I bet a lot of pirates buy trades over floppies at least I do, anyway

Tradewaiting is understandable, and an inevitability of decompression becoming a norm in storytelling.

But let's be real, some pirate and never pay a dime.

DC Comics has announced that the digital-first Adventures of Supergirl comic will be released in print issues twice-monthly starting in May! The bi-weekly digital issues have been regularly hitting DC’s Digital Top Sellers list since the series debuted in January, and demand for a Supergirl comic generated by the TV show’s success has (unsurprisingly) been strong enough for DC Comics to offer it in print for comic shops as well.

I don't feel bad about torrenting/story timing comics. I still spend money on the ones I like and buy something new once in a while. DC and Marvel use the comic IP's to make billions from merchandise, games and movies... as long as people keep paying for that, the comics are a good investment.

It's 2016, going down to the store and buying floppies is dead.

Why don't they have a Netflix like subscription system? I'm reading 5+ current DC titles and not paying a cent for issues (although I do trade by my favourites). Surely everyone paying $5 a month is better than a few people paying $25 a month.
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>82873426
Marvel has that, $10 for all the issues you can read from up to six months ago and hardly anyone uses it.
>>
>>
>>82871437
Yes.
>>
>>82873426

Marvel Unlimited costs 1 dollar right now.

Well, there's your problem. They should make something like
>$10 a month - Read up to 10 comics every month
>$20 a month - Read up to 30 comics
>$30 a month - Read up to 60 comics

Etc, piracy free download and all that shit included.

It's not tough maths.

If you have more people paying less money, that can be a better financial move than having less people pay more money.

If you did a poll right now, I think you would find that those who pirate issues outnumber those who pay by a significant margin.

Yes I pirate comics, but I really don't see how that's all that different from going to a comic book, reading one in it's entirety, and not paying for it. People have been doing that shit for years, same with all kinds of media (movies, music, books, etc.)

The difference between me and the rest of the "scuzzy internet plunderers" is that I go out of my to try and support the things I like when I can. Right now I'm unemployed and live with my parents, so I can't afford that many luxirous comforts with downloading something that I didn't pay for

What they fear is that it goes awry and instead of gaining a significant amount of new/paying readers, a bunch of their floppy buying zombies say "fuck this" and transition to cheap digitals.

Which is why the digital 0-day release isn't cheaper than the physical, even when that defies all logic and reason.

You're not very bright are you?

Superman's first appearance was 10 cents in 1938.

With inflation that's $1.64

Next you need to take into account:

>Cost of material rising
>Better paid employees
>Cost of a larger infrastructure
>Smaller market
>Diamond's monopoly

$2.99 is a pretty good price all things consider and DC is really struggling to justify keeping it that low.

Even 80 page one shots are shipping for 2.99 now.
