This is something we see in a lot of media, and it always bugs me too. World of Warcraft is perhaps the worst offender, where all the monstrous races' males look properly brutal and fierce and the female versions basically look like conventionally attractive human females who happen to have two or three traits in common with the race they're supposed to be a part of. Apparently in the original beta testing of the game, this wasn't the case; the female trolls looked like male trolls, but there were so many complaints about them looking 'ugly' that their design was replaced by that of a conventionally attractive human female with two or three slightly troll-like traits.

Here's the way I approach this topic: Imagine a dude wearing a police officer costume for halloween. Now imagine the female version of that same costume:

Just like the werewolf girl in your pic and the female orc in my pic or the female trolls I spoke of don't really look like werewolves or orcs or trolls - they just look like conventionally attractive girls who happen to have a couple of traits in common with the thing they're suppose to be - the female cop costume just looks like a sexy girl who has a couple of police-ish things on her.

It's all just market forces. People are more willing to invest in something with ugly or monstrous male characters than ugly or monstrous female characters. It's a double standard which seriously limits the creative options available to creators, but it's a sad fact of life that this is what the audience wants. And if the audience doesn't get what they want, they won't pay attention, so your creative endeavour will fail. It's a compromise that has to be made in order to make your efforts worthwhile, as aggravating as that may be.

Here, further to my point. Here's what male and female trolls originally looked like. Like they were members of the same race, right? One could see the two characters on the left being brother and sister. It made sense. But the market wanted the characters on the right because sexy girls sell and montrous girls don't. Aight there's a few reasons.

Being monstrous is considered masculine, as it makes the character look more dangerous. Being cute is likewise considered feminine. I mean hell, look at testosterone and estrogen. Testosterone makes you bulky and shit, estrogen does things like making your skin shiny.

Also if a guy has an average appearance, but is super rich and charming he can still land a really hot girl. If a girl is really hot she can land a rich, charming guy. Appearance matters more to guys, that's why rich dudes can get girlfriends/wives 10 years younger than them if they have good social standing. In many of these fictional universes with beatsfolk being powerful is considered good social standing.

Also, this appears a lot in video games as well as comics, both of which tend to have males as the primary demographic where this happens. Guys want to play as/project onto a hulking rage-fest, but they don't mind swapping that out if they get to see a hot girl in action instead.

And before somebody says "some girls find muscly guys like that hot" or whatever, keep in mind being attractive is part of the male power fantasy. Yes some girls can enjoy monstrous dudes but they are most certainly aimed at dudes.

Even in things where males aren't necessarily the main audience, it's considered so normal by now it just sticks around, unless a designer is actively trying to fight against a design like that.

My fucking nigga. I ran a vampire killer tabletop RPG (in CoC) for some friends who were expecting Dracula 2, basically (they were students of Abraham Van Helsing chronologically after the novel. Instead of just drawing from Dracula, instead I had "Vampires" be hemophagic symbiotic parasites that gradually took over their host and metamorphosize their body to suit their needs, basically becoming moth-like like your picture but with flesh wings like a blood eagle. They used coffins as cocoons. They also had reshaped jaws, split in the middle like mandibles and instead of normal fangs they had a fanged proboscis (the parasite extending from the host) like a del Toro vampire or the Majini in Resident Evil.

Not really in the spirit of Victorian vampire fiction but I like body horror.

Most guys are perfectly fine playing some monstrous powerhouse. Not really the case for most females. The real answer is a holdover from when female character were just eye candy and nothing else and yes, it is sexist.
