Reposting yesterday's page in case anyone missed it! What do you guys think?
>>
>>82587120
Psst - this should be #269, the last thread was #268.
>>
I have a question for the guys in this thread. How do you act when you fall in love with a girl but you can't say anything about it? I'm wondering if it's any different from a girl's actions/thoughts when this happens. So basically what's it like to be a guy who's friend zoned?

well it helps that i always wear really soft soft pants. and i dont give any fucks if i'm sporting wood. though i'm getting to the age where i don't get random erections anymore and the ones i get don't last long

this is a fun conversation
>>
>>82587228
interested to see what her problem is
>>82587286
if it absolutely CAN'T be, then i rationalize that it isn't supposed to be, and stop wanting it. if it can be but it's gonna be hard, i just.. act nice, hope she shows some interest
>>
>>82587365
I really like the variety in shades of green you went with for the foliage.
>>
>>82587382
>I don't give any fucks
You sound like you have a sloppy personality, I probably wouldn't like you in real life
>>82587407
Well you do you feel while trying to remain friends with her and not letting your feelings show though?
>>
>>82587764
if you feel like peopls should feel bad about their functions, then yeah we probably wouldn't get along
>>
>>82587764
Not a conflict, the way I be friends with someone is the way I show my feelings, whatever they are. Nice is just nice.
That's not a very good comic story though. I would suggest you show a lot of angst and awkwardness in their thought bubbles. Maybe even go the Sakura route and draw their inner self
>>
>>82587286
im not a cuck and have my own way of seducing girls so I never get friendzoned. I act indifferent towards her and prioritize talking to her friends than her, but if I notice her slipping away, I just pop in bullshit tricks. Girls looooove love loooooove talking about themselves. Just pop in some fun facts about themselves using some bullshit quiz game or say things like "you're really nice deep down arent you? you were just misunderstood" depending on the girl, and you'll got their attention although this is just for an opener. You'll have to do much more. You shouldn't say you want her or appear like one because if you do that, they know they're in control. So you see? I'm not telling her that I want her, but I'm going undetected and winning her friends' liking first. Girls also love following trends and what many people think so if you're popular to her friends, that's a bonus.

Well, I have a sample size of one, but here's my experience.
I like a girl; Girl is dating one of my best friends, so there's no way in hell I'm gonna be making a move.
So, I just stay friendly. This isn't particularly hard. Aside from her being incredibly pretty, we have a lot of interests in common. We're artists, we love fantasy and comics, and I just focus on those when we're together and try to surreptitiously leave the room when she and my friend are making out when the friend group is hanging out.
Eventually, after a few years she and my friend break up, and after a few months of pussying about I work up the nerve to tell her when I'm driving her home one night after having spent the day hanging out. And after breaking down into nervous laughter because she wasn't paying attention and didn't hear my heartfelt confession the first time, I get across to her that I'd had a crush on her since the day we met and she tells me she can't see me like that because we're such good friends.
And that was that. We stayed friends for a few more years, but we eventually grew apart. I don't know if she changed, or if I changed, or if she just didn't want me around knowing how I felt, but now I haven't spoken to her in a few years. Think she might have went overseas and become a tattoo artist.

New page! Haven't done one of these "backstory" pages in a while; if the seals look a bit awkward in panel 3 it because that's their "mid-transformation" stage.
It's wierd how fast these pages seem to fly by once I got through Chapter 2; I know I'm still producng 1/week, but I feel I've just started this chapter and I'm already 1/3rd of the way through

>>82587365

I'm a bisexual and I have crushes all the time. I've probably fallen for every friend I have, but I've never been put in the friend zone.. I put myself there just to save everybody the trouble. And I'm totally fine with it. I love my friends and what matters to me is that I can spend time with them. That's all I need.

Anyway, if you can't say about it, then just don't. Say it a gorillion years later, when you don't have the feelings anymore, but not when you're full-on ''in love'', because that'll just scare away your friend. If you want to keep the friendship, just zip it at the time and don't try any moves.

I once fucked my best friend, who's a guy and straight, on a vacation we had together and that was a mistake. We got over it pretty quickly, but he doesn't trust me as much as he used to. Maybe he's afraid that I still want him or something, even though I don't, and that's something you don't want in your friendship.
>>
>>82588788

>>82588788
Oh yeah, while me and my usual writer have crazy synergy, there's some stuff he'll never wanna write and I'll never wanna draw. So it's pretty freeing to just shit out goofy self-indulgent comics. As for running two comics at once: Nah. The one-shots are basically 'whenever I have the time' with no solid update schedule. So there's no pressure there.

The next one-shot'll be me practicing my chiarascuro while trying to copy that PS1/PS2-era mascot games (like Spyro, Crash, etc). Pic related, it might be the two main characters for it.
>>
>>82588915
Thanks scrublord, I knew I could count on you
>>
>>82588788
So, there's more to their romance than the classical "stole your clothes so now you're my waifu".
That's nice to see.
Kind of strange how the seals got up that high in the fourth panel, it doesn't look like there's a cliff that tall around.
>>
>>82588589
rekt. at least your friend got some action
>>
>>82588788
ahh i assume she's remembering these guys to compare them to the current guys
>>
>>82588911
I try to keep buffer large enough that I wont need to have a hiatus mid-chapter. I usually have a 1-2 week hiatus between chapters; but at least I try to get the pacing of each individual chapter uninterrupted

>>82588930
Nice; I'm personally can't imagine drawing for someone else UNLESS the writer is also into folklore or history because those are the things I really enjoy drawing. Mainly because I've already got so little time for this hobby I tried to fit as many mythological creatures and historical armor/weapons/dresses as I could in a single story.

>>82589142
Yeah, it was *supposed* to be the rocks in Panel 1; but I had a lot of trouble framing it in such a way that you could see the Selkies, and the kid running towards the house being built.

I *TRIED* giving them a bittersweet romance because the "I stole your clothes, now you can't go back home" tale you get with Selkies or Merrows just felt too damn grim for the generally more lighthearted tone of the comic. I think I did a believable love story, but it's also the first time I've tried writing anything CLOSE to romance and I'm half-autistic when it comes to that stuff so let's hope for the best

I've seen you say stuff like this, and it makes me question what kind of school you went to - these kinds of comments are really common in a crit. In any case, nothing that Anon said would be out of place were this an academic critique irl...

>>82592623
No skin color means easy skin color to pick from. This was a habit I had to represent the real world in comics because it's dull and colorless. In mine now it's the complete opposite.
There's some research I put into it such as train signals, video game references, and how weapons work in said games but there's almost no research into it and I'm just going by dream logic.

i save a few good skin thumbnails then do slight variations of them. shifting from yellow to red makes some of the biggest differences

also frost giants are fuckhuge. as cool as the concept is, i dont think you can manage them properly without either otherdimensions or just saying your versions are the real ones that the myths exaggerated.
>>
>>82592581
Not sure about those colouring methods you've got there. Smoothness is not always a good thing - you need some texture in there.

don't blur everything out, it can be good to have some visible stroke marks in there, or clear distinctions between bright and dark parts

and maybe add some highlights in there

the colour choice seems pretty much fine,
>>
>>82592932
Okay, I'll change something up on this next panel. When you say highlights, what do you mean? Because I know what it means but I don't understand completely.

the brightest of the bright
the specific area that is the brightest, the part of the curve that most directly faces the light

i probably shouldn't've mentioned them as there aren't any massively shiny things in the pic, but it's generally a nice thing to add

but anyway, the way you're colouring makes things look like smooth, matte plastic, when cloths are quite heavily textured,

On that topic, get some folds in there, son
>>
>>82593044
Not him but Norse stuff is so over used and unoriginal now it's hard to get into any of it. Now if they used more variety of Norge lore that be great, me being a Norweaboo and all. Also wouldn't mind some more over sexualized Norwegian men, they're my fetish.
>>
>>82592852

>>
>>82593255

I thought people were really into the Norse stuff now, because everyone was tired of Greek/Roman/Egyptian stuff.
>>
>>82593198
If anything its probably the way the texture is in a flat plane that might be throwing you off, but the shape is perfect
>>
>>82593255
I have no idea what a general Norwegian man looks like. I live in Finland and I know our men, and they're just straight-up depressing sometimes. We could use some sexualization over here too.
>>
>>82593044
An overuse in current media when there's a wealth of less explored myth and legend available. While Norse myth is certainly interesting in its origins, the interpretation is just a boiled down cliche of "guys with hammers/axes" "ice everything" "runes" or some variation based off Skyrim or marvel's Thor of all things
>>
>>82587365
Great greens for the foliage. But mixing them up regardless of distance makes it look flat. Appealingly flat, but still flat. You're going for depth, so use lighter/less-intense shades the farther away something is, and darker/deeper shades the closer it is.

I added texture to the couch green eyes is laying on a few pages ago but then I forgot to add it after that page.
Okie dokie though. I'll definitely try.
I'm kind of having a dilemma because their outside environment are kind of based on pic related (so everyone's eyes are electric colored and saturated) but shadows are natural except there's not really a definite light source on the outside of the trolley they're in so I'm at odds.
As for the clothing, Green-eyes is wearing a bathcoat-like think so it's supposed to be smooth but the pic you linked has a better texture for it than what I did.
I'll post another page in about an hour or 30 minutes or whatever or so.
>>
>>82593348
Well if it's deeper, more researched and isn't just "muh Norse gods" I think that would make whatever you're doing stand out a whole lot more, make it more interesting anyway. It's rare you see actual well developed and researched Norse mythology in comics now days. Also, not enough norweaboo service.
>>
>>82592623
I only stick to normie characters because going to vampire, demon, ayy lmaos, etc. scare me. There are so many things tp get wrong, you see, but if I do end up making one, I always research a lot. Like almost all the links in Google's 1-10 page are not left unclicked. And then after that, Youtube videos. I try to get to the most acceptable representation of the creature, but will always end up with the most simplest product because if I try too hard and fucked up.... well. I fucked up big time AND the worst part is that I tried hard. That kind of leaves no room for my own imagination, I'm aware of it, yes.

You want help with that? If we're talking modern a lot of them wear rain jackets or other types of long leaved shirts. Military is also a big thing in Norway, a ton of men have been on military programs sometime in their lives and a fun steriotype they often get is the "silly soldier" (læfy). Now trust me on this, a lot of them have semi-long, soft fluffy hair like pic related.

Some people might know this already, but if you're using a tablet and your smooth lines aren't responding well anymore (it's being choppy, the lines are thick like it's drawn with a mouse, the stabilizer feels like shit), the best thing to do is to type "services.msc" into the windows search bar. A list of Services should pop up. Find words such as "Tablet", "Wacom", "Pen"... basically things that are related to your tablet, and then Restart those services. You're good to go. For this to work, every program that's related to art (ie: Firealpaca, SAI, PS) should be closed first.

Lozer.png

Lozer. His design is based on the idea that he has a natural genetic disadvantage when traveling in united galactic cities and structures by only having arms and no legs. But -- Lozer didn't really choose where he grew up, and developed an inferiority complex because of how he was treated by his peers. Tasks that would take him immense amounts of work could be done effortlessly by the people around him.

Lozer was somewhat pushed into a life of crime -- literally. Given the nickname "Bouncy" he was often abused and used as a fall guy for his "friend" Hank Sully, a carefree galactic cheat known to leave a trail of destruction in his wake. Eventually, Lozer ended up in prison. After he served his time, he decided it was time he set out into the world on his own, and try to live a clean life.

that sucks dude. the only issue i ever run into is if i'm running VLC at the same time, my pressure sensitivity stops working until i either restart photoshop or close VLC. and if i pause or unpause it, that effect triggers again. apparently it's a known conflict between vlc and wacom's shit, and my generic tablet has enough wacom in it to run into that
also every so often pressure sensitivity straight up dies (this looks different in photoshop's settings), and i have to restart my computer

There's 6 20 year olds in purgatory and so Blackie and Pop gets a proposal from the old man to go hunt some shit to fuel the train which is purgatory so they can leave purgatory.
And then they get sent somewhere and go around killing demonic influences in different sections of a star of David until they meet up in the middle and then try to work out their differences and escape the old man's influences or something while Blackie and Pop are trying to live out their childhood dream in a candy land.

Hey; sorry, I know these can get confusing when dialogues are ommited; mainly I don't post dialogues because most of it is "placeholder" and they often end up rather different is the final product. Plus I largely post here to get critique on the art

>How much research do you guys for your comics, and what kind of research?

A LOT; every chapter of mine so far has focussed on a different creature of Celtic mythology. Of course Wikipédia and Mythicalcreatureslist.com are good places to start, though it really helps to read up actual tales involving them, for which Sacred-texts.com is excellent

>>82593348
I think that was just the case way back in Marvel's Thor, because Lee thought people were too familiar with Greeco-roman myth. Nowadays you can't have a high fantasy without elves, dwarves, and Trolls, even if the Vikings are absent

>>82593602
You should check out Carrion Girls. The author often comes here and it's actually one of the best mythology comics I've read precicelly because of the amount of research put into Norse myth and culture.
Even "popular" myths can bemade more interesting by going back to the source; I try to do the same in mine as well

The first one is already like this, try something different. Good cartoon teams either have very slight but meaningful differences or are completely distinct. I would advise you to go for one or another, but all of your female characters have the same body type with variations on how tall they are.
>>
>>82603977
Real life relationships are almost never like they are portrayed in fiction. In that regard they're pretty much like action scenes, you don't need to have experience in hand to hand combat to write/draw them properly.

As for romantic scenes specifically, it's more about knowing why would those characters be interested in each other and the just playing out the acting.

It's not bad, but I'd give it more leeway if you didn't have several female characters with the same build. Even if it's supposed to match up with an existing character, you could do with some variation.

Also, it's weird that she has the same mirror wrist guards as the other one. See, that one fought with her fists, so that makes sense. On this one they draw attention to the hands...why?

I grew up on Ninja Turtles. They didn't need to have a fat one or a skinny one, or a short one. It was fine that they looked utterly the same. What's important is that they ARE different characters.

I'm not really into shoehorning body diversity just because a lot of other people do it. I think there's ways to be way too flippant with diversifying body types. For me there's a goldilocks zone that should be travelled outside of only for special occasions.

>See, that one fought with her fists
Noooo no no no. Princess Rosebuster is named so because one or both of her arms transform into megabuster rip-offs. I plan to do a separate pic later of these fairies with brandished weapons. The gloves and laces are no different than the turtle belt buckles and elbowguards.

You seem to be ignoring that I said
>Good cartoon teams either have very slight but meaningful differences or are completely distinct.
Emphasis on the first half.

Teams like the TMNT, PPG, and Power Rangers work because they only have very slight but immediately obvious differences. The original TMNT had no differences at all, actually, but the color coded version boosted them into the huge franchise they are today.

They also work because, aside from evil counterparts and intentionally similar side characters, this core design is exclusive to the team. There is nobody else in TMNT who looks ANYTHING like the Turtles except the anti-turtles of stuff like Flash Forward and forced extras like Venus di Milo. This is why I ALSO said
>I'd give it more leeway if you didn't have several female characters with the same build.

The design is fine. Not the best, but fine. The problem is that this looks a lot like multiple existing female characters in your comic. Raphael, Buttercup and suited-up Billy don't resemble Casey, Princess (who actually IS supposed to look like a knockoff), or Skull. And when characters tend to bleed over due to the author's style, body diversity does wonders. If it weren't for the Ginyu's differences, Burter would be criticized as just a Blue Lizard Jeice. You don't need to reinvent the fucking wheel, just have SOME meaningful variation beyond height.

I misunderstood the first character, but I would still argue that the mirror-ish guards are like the Powerpuff silhouettes or the Ranger masks in that they can change the impression of the design.

>grew up on Ninja Turtles. They didn't need to have a fat one or a skinny one, or a short one. It was fine that they looked utterly the same. What's important is that they ARE different characters.

Looking at your comic, I'm assuming you also grew up on Shounen manga such as One Piece or Hunter x Hunter. A problem I had with your comic when I read it is, like someone else poited out, every female character just looks the same.

Think back of the TNMT and you'll notice that, often when the caste all use the same bodytype with some identifiers (color codes, accessories, etc...) is when those character are part of a team or distinct "group"

It's why similar body-types work with, say, the Sailor Moon cast but instead dulls your character design. Brining back the comment I made on Shounen manga, series like One Piece or Hunter x Hunter have VERY diverse bodytypes which (perhaps subconciously) help accentuate how over-the-top their worlds are.

It's not about "shoehorning", it's about making things visially more entretaining to the reader, same way you're not "shoehorning" different hairstyles, . Obviously we all have prefferences, I try to vary things as much as I can within realistic boundaries (no obese warriors, for example), you don't have to make one of your girls fat and another a She-Hulk, but it would be nice to see a new character that ISN'T a Lanky-Girl-in-her-Late-Teens/Early-20's
>>
>>82604952
Shit, I posted
>>82604998
too late.

But no, I wouldn't call them Barbie dolls. I would just say they look way too similar. Like, if I changed the protagonist's hair, clothes and pupils, I could pin them as any other female. That's not so bad if it happens a few times, but I think that applies to all of them. If you put them side by side I think they're taller and shorter, some have longer faces, but that's about it.

On guys, you haven't drawn very many, have you? There's a few monstrous animal people, and by the nature of BEING anthropomorphic and varied in width and height they're different. But the one male character who showed up regularly seems...I think "indistinct" or "nondescript" might work best. He has a robot arm and a dark skin tone, but he doesn't seem to have a particular build to him. He's average, I suppose. I feel like if there were more human males they'd look a lot like him too.

You don't need to make every character some crazy, exaggerated caricature, but what you have now seems a bit homogenous. There's a shape for girls and every girl is just a slight variation on that. I don't think that works well, but that's only an opinion, not a fact.

>shoehorning body diversity
>goldilocks zone

Sorry, but are you saying that the body diversity of your female characters should only be pushed "on special occasions"? I genuinely don't understand, not trying 2bully. I think it's possible to be just as diverse with female bodies as with male, even if it isn't so common (or not what you wanna do in your work.) Despite the criticism, I think Steven Universe does a great job of having diverse male and female body types (vesus something like Adventure Times, Disney, etc.)

But tl;dr I don't know what the phrase "goldilocks zone" means and I would like to.
>>
>>82605186

>>

>>82605186
>I think Steven Universe does a great job of having diverse male and female body types
Of course it has diverse body types. It's expressly interested in that. I'm not as interested. In Chrono Trigger, in FF6, all those sprites-with a few exceptions-are roughly the same size. And what interested me is how they acted, and what they were capable of. I know there was more official art of them, showing them as more different-y in shape, but I never actually owned the strategy guides.

No one really gets into why they're so interested in seeing the bodies vary more than they are, or how they'd like them. If someone cited an example every once and awhile "If I were you, I would've designed _____ more like _____" then yeah I'd be interested to discuss that. But my creative process juggles differently. It's easy enough to say "Hey, you could spruce up this" because yeah maybe. There's many timesinks in the educational process. How do you know when's the time to be picking which one?

Let's nitpick a totally standalone pinup girl. Pic related is Big Sciss. She wields scissors, and wears a dress made out of chuck taylor shoes. What would you have stretched and/or squarshed, do you think?

Now wait, that isn't an INHERENTLY bad design. It's just a bad design for a colorful action cartoon because the little details would be hard to keep consistent and there's not enough contrast. There's plenty of gaudier, more ornate designs in comics that work just fine.

Sure, but that doesn't negate the fact that they do so in a way that doesn't unsuspend the viewers disbelief, and does so in a way that is purposeful and plot-relevant...

It's more about silhouettes, I think. Like sure, you can vary a silhouette with hair and clothing, but it's not great if removing the accessories removes what distinguishes that character from another.

It's kind of like how each "gem" has a different body type/silhouette that distinguishes who they are - and then there's gems of the same type who are distinguished only by dress (pic related.) I think your designs err more toward the latter, but it's worth considering why, especially in the context of the plot.

The design's weird, like older FF or jrpgs where there are so many things on a character, but I really enjoy the effort put into it. Correct me if I'm wrong, I was here months ago and, IIRC, you arent drawing anime. You were doing a comic about a young boy... and I remember bright colors and big mushrooms. >In Chrono Trigger, in FF6, all those sprites-with a few exceptions-are roughly the same size.
Those games were also working with very limited hardware and their art direction succeeded due to abstraction. We're talking about sprites where one pixel was the difference between normal and buff, petite and HUEG BOOBS. You can apply this logic to your art, but you would need a style that compliments it.

And, not to be harsh, but I think it's less that people think they know how to do it better and more that they'd like SOMETHING different. Maybe her neck is long, or she has a thin nose, or more muscle definition, or a different chest/hip ratio, or strange eyebrows, or...really anything significant? Because to me I'm just thinking "that hoodie girl in a Final Fantasy cosplay."

Guy you responded to in your first paragraph; gonna keep a Name on because anonymous conversations are a mess to follow

>Should I think I haven't with the male half? Is there a place where I demonstrably went very very right? Where is the bicycle not broken, I guess is what I'm asking.

I love your sharks, but those are anthropomorphic animals so let's focus on the human.
I recall four human male characters in your comic. Robot-Arm has a similar lanky body type as the female. That by itself isn't bad but then you've got the guy with the Bo-staff who looks about the same "lanky-guy-in-his-early-20s". Even the pirate captain and the Old man were lanky; all the cops during the Shark carnage also looked VERY young. Now, you DID do a better job with the male humans than the females, but that's also largely because of the age difference. Your comic generally reminds me of CLAM character design; but with a bit less variety. Which is a shame because your art is strong is MOST departments, but character design is not one of them

Latter on your say
>In Chrono Trigger, in FF6, all those sprites-with a few exceptions-are roughly the same size.
That's all well and good, but they were working with SNES top-down perspective limitations. You look at the art and while you've got that distinct Toryama style but you can't tell me the girls all look the same.

Giving the characters different bodytypes is, the way I see it, the same reason you give them different hair. It makes the cat more fun to look at. Of course, I might go too much to the other extreme (if there's a lanky girl in a group, there'll almost always be a chunky girl), but I think that makes the WORLD itself more interesting

When conducting yourself on Twitter, etc, is it better to be a reasonable, rational, kind of person, or just a rampant shitposter (never cruel, but absurd 90% of the time) who can always try to get out of a mistake by pretending you were just being absurdist when you said something ridiculous in earnest by rolling with it and turning it into a joke?

I'm not sure whether the former or the latter is better for avoiding being hurt. The former is more 'genuine' but the latter is significantly more defensive because any attacker motivated by morality (i.e. objection to something you've said) will generally reply to increasingly absurd posts as though they were genuine. On the other hand if you say something accidentally offensive and completely misjudge the mood the absurdist option might blow up even more.

But at least with shitposting you always have the option of shitposting more. Sometimes you can get boxed in when talking seriously and not know what to say next.

>No one really gets into why they're so interested in seeing the bodies vary more than they are, or how they'd like them.

I just like seeing variation in characters. It helps them feel more grounded, and relatable. The cast of Team Fortress 2 is a good example of a bunch of different characters with varying body types. Sure, the core cast is all male, but they all have distinct features; Different noses, different eyes, different muscle builds... It helps reaffirm exactly who they are and make them more appealing because of it. You don't need to hear the scout to know what he sounds like or how he acts; Same thing with the Heavy, or the engineer, or the spy.
>>
>>82605834
It's definitely worth noting that those sprites aren't the original concepts - they're abstractions of the actual character designs, and those designs are of course fairly diverse. It's pretty noticeable in Chrono Trigger too, given even the obvious differences in characters like Robo, Frog, Ayla, and the typical humans, even in sprite form.

If anything, with sprites those differences almost feel more important given how much you need to convey through so little visual information.

Think of it like this: when you create characters you probably come up with unique histories, personalities, motivations etc. for all of them. You give them personalised outfits, place them in different environments, so why would you give them mostly indistinguishable body types? The physical appearance of a character isn't complete after designing just their facial features, you're leaving out a very effective visual tool of conveying character.

And by diverse I don't mean fat or trans or whatever -- this ain't about inclusion -- it's purely about raw diversity of character designs. I've talked to you about your art on it before.
You just shooshed me to death after a certain point and I decided to not try that again.
>>
>>82607695
I don't believe you.

This sounds like a parroting to a different lie. I know how I act in private, and that's not it.

Please don't do that.
>>
>>82607734
I'm not trying to make a personal attack, that's just my experience with you. You're receptive to adding things but you hate removing or changing things.
>>
>>82607734
Ugh, I'm not that Anon but you have been rude to me in the webcomic chat before. I don't think you're deliberately rude, I think you just have weak social skills (sorry), but it's worth considering a another person's perception of you to some extent. Even the most self-aware person can only be so aware of themself - and you have no way to tell what you may seem like from the outside but to ask others or do a lot of (inherently biased) soul searching.
>>
>>82607776
>>82607805
If you're not going to give talking to me in private a chance ever again, don't do it in public anonymously either. Stop doing this to the fucking threads. Jesus.

I'd do you the same courtesy. Man up.
>>
>>82607584
What concession are you looking for?

There's plenty things about your art that I like; your character design for humans isn't one of them. Individually those girls look neat, together in the same comic they look dull
>>
>>82608116
Got a skype m8?
>>
>>82607941
I never have talked to you in private on skype, and I don't plan on it. You aren't owed "concessions", or nuggets of positivity nestled into a critique. So you draw the same body type because it would take the time to build the muscle memory to draw other types of figures, is my understanding. Also are you intending to go professional, and if so, how do you think you'll manage with this inability to follow a model sheet that you describe? Like that other Anon said, if it's a muscle memory problem it's one that lies in your fundamentals. Just do some studies beside your comic - no big deal.
>>
>>82608322
Well that's a fuckin shame.

You are the ONLY person in these threads who I've seen ask to move a crit to skype. The whole point of 4chan is to be anonymous - is it really no surprise some people wouldn't want to jump over to a platform where that isn't so? I like that I can post my comic without having it be associated with my comments or critique.

well no, but.. the specifics. the nitpicking. the careful mix of things that aren't/shouldn't be a problem and things he actually didn't do wrong but a lot of other people do and it would be bad if he did.. i mean seriously, we're criticizing design 2 of.. i dunno, 5, for looking samey? for an in-universe fictional cartoon with a magical girl element to it? I just wonder how many times he has to say he's aware of and in-control of what he's doing, and approves of it, before people stop telling him 'do something different' purely out of a desire to dissent. and accuse him of being unable to do otherwise.

I'm not trying to "dissent" just for the sake of it. I didn't say anything about the costumes or anything - just that the figures/silhouettes are same-y. And then discussed why that's a problem, and what to do about it. Scribs won't lose face by admitting there might be something lacking in his fundamentals if he is incapable of drawing varying female silhouettes. It's not a matter of being progressive, it's literally good character/visual design. If he is capable of drawing multiple silhouettes and still chooses to draw the same girl in different outfits, without an actual reason for it, it's "bad form." ;)

Also: the magical girl genre is capable of diversity. Betaman artist is also exploring magical girl genre and his women all remain sexy while varied (save those two twins). Tokyo Mew Mew is a commercial example...
>>
>>82609435
i guess it's just the way you're leaving no room to disagree. it's easy to list the number of irritating things you're NOT doing, like yeah you're not just trying to be lolprogressive or anything, but you are being really rigid about this. and i don't think scribs knows how to answer that yet in a peaceful way that ends with him listening to, but choosing not to take, your advice.
maybe i should just stay out of it. but it sounds really familiar, yknow?
>>
>>82593635
Yeah, they'll have different colors. But the farther away they are, each of those different colors will seem lighter and lighter. Google atmospheric perspective. Darker and heavier up close, lighter and thinner farther away is a good trick for adding depth to an illustration.
>>
>>82609483
You replied to the actual troll sir
>>
>>82609483
I dunno, it doesn't help there are like three people talking to him who all apparently type like I do. I don't care what he does, I just urge him to carefully consider how he is constructing his comic. Like when we discussed SU he dismissed their body diversity as a "vested interest" rather than acknowledge the plot relevance. If all the women look alike, it's worth examining why. If at the end it's just a fantasy story and all the women will just look alike just cause, then okay, whatever, that's his choice. Personally I'm not interested in reading something like that, but I might not even be in his target demo. He's selective in how he chooses to respond to critique - outright ignoring the content of most of the posts directed toward him. I haven't felt this way since this thread, but honestly, his posting throws every thread off the tracks and I regret even engaging.

Sorry for contributing to this waste of a thread.
>>
>>82609620
see that's what i'm saying, it's really hard to tell
i dont think scribs' policy of wanting to take it off the board is the solution for that, but it's a f'real problem right?
>>82609647
and yeah he's being overly dismissive. i think the problem is the baggage of past conversations that people bring into each new one, because I know -i'm- not interested in rehashing anything i've talked to death with people already even if it's new people. but that isn't showing those new people much respect. but at the same time i really really don't agree with the specific critique he's getting, and i feel like that can't be coincidence.
>>
>>82609620

Dude, you need to get off his dick and admit that he has a serious problem with anonymous posters on an anonymous imageboard that borders on mental illness territory. The last several hours are proof that no matter how nice we are, no matter how hard we genuinely try to help him, he'll turn into a petulant little shit, as evidenced by the very mature posts he's made such as >>82607055, >>82607417, >>82607584, >>82607639, >>82607734, >>82607941, >>82608134, >>82608362, >>82608718 (fucking hell at that one), and >>82609311. He's so far gone that I literally cannot comprehend why someone would waste their time defending him.

That's what it seems like, and what his modus depended on.

Aside from just posting the shitty comics, he also sockpuppeted all his support AND HIS DISSENT. This is important to note, because that way even if we all agreed not to respond to him, we would still be getting anons dumb enough to respond to his sockpuppets, "LEAVE IT ALONE, DUMBASS." And that would make idiots of the others "YOU'RE THE DUMBASS, YOU JUST RESPONDED TO HIM. GOOD JOB" and between that, and the people we had to bring up to speed what the situation was, the threads were brought to shit all the same. I mean why do you think so many people know about him? This was going on every day for 5 months.

It was the kind of monotony that would drive any normal person bonkers. Because there was literally nothing different about it each time. There was no motive! He should've gotten bored. But he didn't. He inflicted the same goddamn day on the batman threads for 5 fucking months.

To this day I'm convinced Bones is Simpsons Guy under a new name.

>>
>>82609483
There's plenty of room to disagree!
Multiple posts in this very thread have expressed that if he doesn't agree, that's okay!

The point of this kind of critical dissection is to understand areas that could be improved. This discussion has hit a point where multiple people have pointed out that Scribble's female characters tend to have nearly the same build. Scribble acknowledges this in a way by explaining that he doesn't know how to effectively stay on model with anything else.

So people suggest he practices this...and he won't. And that's the frustrating part about this shit. We've found a good thing to work on and he just won't. He's going to act like this is a bunch of bullies trolling him and discard this instead of improving his art.

This kind of thing is helpful for others because we can see where we could improve as well, but getting to this point just for the subject to enter a turtle state instead of taking part in the discussion and thinking of ways he can diversify without compromising his style is unbelievably annoying.

Then why'd you start getting all defensive and support once things drifted that way, man? As little as a "hmmm, that'll be hard, but maybe I should work on that" could have actually ended the discussion, and all the shitposters would have to be witnesses to the fact that Scribblehatch can actually take criticism and hold a discussion without letting it devolve into garbage.

I'm sorry, I hate saying this, but this asshole
>>82609904
is right. You are your own worst enemy enemy. We finally got you to reign it in and participate in a relatively civil discussion, where meaningful content was discussed, and all you had to do was just take a single slice of humble pie and just say "fine, I'll try that." But instead you literally did the thing shitposters have turned into a goddamn meme.

And the worst part of it all, the most frustrating thing, is you're telling me you're going to do it anyway. Why not just SAY THAT instead of making things go to shit again?!

He said it's difficult to keep things consistent when you change the character model, so he'd have to invest a lot of time in it. And yeah, it's DIFFICULT to keep things straight when it's not just muscle memory, but that's part of learning.

>so he has to do everything you suggest?
No, dumbass, the complaint is that he abstains once it comes down to this instead of trying to come up with something. He doesn't have to do anything he's told to do, but not even trying to find a solution once a problem is recognized is stupid.i

you posted it 3 times, and people aren't responding not because they didn't see it. but because no one cares.

the art is mediocre. you chose to do a story oriented one shot action comic, so the standards for art are already higher. There's clearly a lot of effort put in, but the forms are unappealing because you lack strong lines coupled with weak anatomy, and the colors don't compliment well. Dialogue/story was average, not enough to carry the art. The font is also tiny, and the bubbles are ugly. Read a couple of pages, dropped.

Didn't bother to read it (busy, sorry) but right off the bat I think your faces need reworking.
The eyes are consistently too high up the face.
Like, you place the bottom of the eye around where I'd expect the eyebrow to be.
Obviously, you don't have to give every character perfect facial proportions, but it's a good starting point.

When I felt that I might get dropped out I started making this and I made the mistake of rushing it when they axed me and just last night I got to finish it.

I think the art suffered a lot because I rushed it. I'm such a disappointment :^(

Yeah, I used to have this problem a lot. Then I got over it when I got myself a cheap drawing tab. But then the drawing tab broke and I ended up having to draw everything with just my mouse. I know that doesn't excuse it, I should do better.

People keep track of characters and keeping them on model by thinking of noses, headshapes, and eye shapes in relation to other real world shapes.

Her head is like a teapot, or like a diamond, or what have you.

His nose is a pretty narrow, or her eyes lids are pointed. Just shorthand reminders to keep your model consistent. Aside from that all you have to do is just draw them a bunch.

I honestly don't see how having to draw with a mouse would make the basic placement of facial features harder, but hey, if you're cognizant of the problem, you can work at fixing it. You're better off art-wise than you were before you made the comic.

>>82612324
I feel ya. The field I work in is pretty male-dominated, and it was kind of disheartening to see employers tripping over themselves to headhunt women who honestly don't perform any better than you do while you can't even get an interview yourself. Ah well, no use begrudging others their success.

well there's nothing wrong with starting with an existing character in mind, you just then do an intentionally poor copy of them that makes a few changes that improve it. I love it when I start out a character without any real guideline, then later an existing character from something else gives me the perfect role model for that character. Robin was just 'the dumb one that's bad at magic' until I realized she should be like Fuura from SZS

I think P3 could do with mentioning some kind of dainty/delicate/similar task, to tie it in with the previous two.
> You can't just stab people for making fun of your needlework, Skeggold.

As for P4, maybe helping clear fallen trees after a storm?
>>
>>82614542
Well, when I'm coming up with character concepts, the starting point is to identify a character's role in the story and form them around that.
For instance, a protagonist would be created around the central themes of the story - like, in a story about the futility of heroism, the protagonist would be some kind of hero - a hunter of dragons who's becoming disillusioned because he has to watch a lot of charred corpses for every one person he saves, for instance. An antagonist would be based on the opposite approach to the theme - perhaps in our dragon-hunting example, there'd be a young hunter who keeps making things worse by playing the hero, or a dragon hunter who's found success and happiness and is adored as a hero by being a self-centered charlatan.

Other characters, too, should be based around their roles in the plot. Obviously, a romantic interest should have qualities that endear the audience to them (good looks, personality, etc), and if there are several (I don't know much about VN's, but I think this is common?) they should each have their own type of appeal. One a slob who accepts all the protagonist's flaws, one a perfectionist who wants the protagonist to be all that he can be, one sporty, one nerdy, etc etc (this applies to their visual appeal, too - if they're all blonde bombshells with huge breasts, that might get a little boring).

Other roles include being the audience surrogate who gets things explained to them that the audience doesn't know (commonly the protagonist can fulfill this role, but sometimes this doesn't make sense - for instance, a dragon hunter wouldn't need the basics of how dragons work explained so he might have a sidekick or assistant, or explain it to his clients), minor characters that move the plot along (like a mailman giving the hero a letter), and helping explore the protagonist's personality.

Basically, try to move away from "I want to create a character" to "I need to fill these story roles".

Yeah, it definitely needs to be less "random violence ha ha". I was thinking of changing it into her getting into fistfights with the honored dead warriors that she's supposed to be playing host to* so it's more about her lack of social graces. My first thought was having her stab a drunk guy for inappropriate touching, but I think the details of why that's improper of her would be hard to get across.

*(not sure of the phrasing here - can a person play host to someone, or do they just host someone?)

>>82615294
On the other hand, that's bretty gud. Might be a little much to have her physically attacking her coworkers tho, I don't want her seeming like a total psycho.
>>
Forgot about this bit.

>>82615235
>As for P4, maybe helping clear fallen trees after a storm?
I think I prefer chopping firewood, because it's more of a menial household chore that you'd expect men to do so it's more funny for Skeggöld to get excited about it.
Thor getting drunk and knocking over a bunch of stuff would be a good explanation for why the people that usually chop their firewood for them aren't available, though.
>>
>>82615679
what is it exactly that their duties to the honored dead entail?
'playing host to' is more what odin's doing, when you provide the.. amenities, like the actual building. like 'the civic center tonight is playing host to the boston pops' or whatever. but now i've said host too many times and its meaning has been lost

well a needlestab doesn't have to be THAT psycho.. maybe change to jab..

>what is it exactly that their duties to the honored dead entail?
Well, the way I understand it, they serve them drinks (and maybe food) at the meals. Some people understand this to mean that they're some kind of common servants or waitresses, but I'm pretty sure it's linked to an ancient Germanic drinking ritual known as "sumbel", where it was considered a sign of the highest respect for the head of a hall to have his daughters or wife serve his guests or personal retainers drinks, rather than having the common staff do it. Essentially it's a symbol that the dead warriors are so cool and incredibly high status that they deserve to have their drinks served by the daughters of Odin himself.

In Carrion Girls, they also do stuff for them that their wives would have done in life, like cut their hair and beards. Also, even Odin doesn't have enough daughters to pass around drinking horns to 900,000 dead guys every night, so relatively lower-status guys like common soldiers have to make do with his foster daughters like Skeggöld and Skalmöld.

>>82616002
Well, sometimes they're the results of wind Jötunn like the great eagle Hræsvelgr of the north wind, but I doubt they'd come near enough to Asgard to be a nuisance to the valkyries.

Nah, ordinary run-of-the-mill Scandinavian grills don't usually catch Odinn's attention. The ones that were born human, rather than being elves or dwarves or giants or whatever, were usually exceptional witches, royalty, oracles, members of Odin's priesthood or some combination of the four before they came to Asgard.

In Carrion Girls, valkyries don't have any special powers aside from being granted eternal youth - they don't do anything that a sufficiently learned mortal witch couldn't do with the resources at their disposal.

New ones are adopted on an ongoing basis, but I think the oldest ones are about 700 at the time of the story.

Violence must be earned or else it is senseless. And when it is present it must feel violent, brutal and savage. It should give you an itch and make you uncomfortable but still happy.

Kenny beating the ever loving fuck out of Carver in The Walking Dead is such a disgusting catharsis that I loved every minute of it but still found it uncomfortable.

I'm all for more violence, but you gotta treat it like a spice. You can't or shouldn't toss it on everything.
>>
>>82617920
>It should give you an itch and make you uncomfortable
I disagree with this. You can have violence that does nothing of the sort but is still excellent.
>>
>>82617396
Not quite. Scandinavians can usually get the gist across to each other with enough effort, but Icelanders are pretty unintelligible to them. (this is in part from Denmark's long domination of Norway - viking-era Norwegian was part of the western dialect of Norse, from which Icelandic and the Norse-descended languages of the northern British isles are also descended, while Danish and Swedish are from the eastern dialect.)

Icelandic, being as isolated as it is, is still close enough to Medieval West Old Norse that they can generally get the gist of the original sagas when written with the original spelling, but they'd have a hell of a time understanding it if spoken with the original pronnciation. The change from proto-Norse to old Norse is pretty huge - the alphabet changed a lot and words were spelled very differently. Óðinn of the 8th-10th century, for instance, used to be something like Wōđanaz ("Voudhanash", IIRC) in the 5th century from what linguists can tell.
