Why did Matt Groening get so assblasted over this episode? Critic shilling or not, the fact remains that the episode was just as funny as any other from the era, and contained a number of classic lines such as "Boo-urns" and "it was a gummy bear."
>>
Critic was stealing simpsons thunder and G-man was super jelly. That's why he used his clout at fox to get the critic killed by moving it to a shit time slot.
>>
>>82491279
OH
>>
Pretty sure it wasn't about the quality of the episode itself so much as he didn't want it to look like Simpsons was shilling for another cartoon that viewers might then believe he worked on.
>>
>>82491279
In all honesty, outside of the beginning of the episode, it was pretty weak.

matt groening also got assblasted whenever the show did anything cartoony and honestly thinks it looks better now

fuck him
>>
>>82491279
because it STINKS!
>>
>>82491279
He even refuses to make the audio comment of this ep.
The episode was great and he shouldn't be mad by now.
>>
Man getting hit with football
Don't cry for me I'm already dead

The episode can exist because of this two greats
>>
>>82491279
The Critic is criminally underrated, as funny as golden age simpsons with some legitimately great pathos.
>>
>>82491975
Weak by classic standards maybe, but it's like 5000X better than the Family Guy crossover and a lot of other stuff after Season 9.
>>
>>82491279
Because he didn't want it to happen. They forced it on him.

>Yeah, it's weak when compared to something good, but when you compare it to shit it starts to look a whole lot better!
>>
>>82491279
Dude, Matt Groening is not and never has been a main creative force behind The Simpsons. After that initial pitch session where he sketched his own family, it was all other people.
>>
>>82491279
I had no idea the Critic was a show until I came to /co/ for the first time a couple years ago. I always assumed the character was a celeb cameo by a real film critic.
>>
>>82493111
Sam Simon Creator Of The Simpsons gets no respect.

And now he's dead.
>>
>>82493141
Same.
I thought is was some celeb cameo instead of a crossover of another show.

Not that it was a bad thing or anything.

>>82494765
You're underestimating just how many people don't know about that show. It has nothing to do with age
>>
>>82492582
So he's like Geroge Lucas?
>Used to make great stuff because he was surrounded by people that challenged him and came up with ideas themselves, but the newer stuff they came up with was shit because he made most of the decisions
>>
>>82494810
like >>82493111 said, he never had much to do with what made the show good
>>
I love this episode because pukahontas (don't cry for me) is one of the saddest things I've seen on the Simpsons (mother Simpsons ending too)

But pukahontas hits close to home

Also it had great jokes
>is this a pimple or the boil?
>the Simpsons sign at the airport
>it cost 80 million dollars
>man getting hit by football

I'm sure there's more I can't think of right now
>>
>>82494777
>critic ended in 95
I was 4. Do the math.
>>
>>82494765
They never aired The Critic in my country, but we got pretty much all of God, The Devil & Bob so it kind of balances itself out.
>>
>>82491279
I think Zombie Simpsons was a result of Al Jean getting back at Matt for that episode.

>>
>>82495262
>did george just ruin that man's sculpture?
Yes.
>>
>>82495262
Yes, the guy must have spent hours making all those details to have it look natural
Then George makes imperfect notches without even asking the professional about their decision on it
>>
There were a lot of great moments. Honestly I thought it worked fine without even knowing The Critic was another show and not just a guest character.

No, since he doesn't have much involvement with the new stuff. Plus Life in Hell was probably consistently good if I had to guess.

When that guy steps to the side of George and nods while looking devastated. You can tell he is not having a good time but just accepts it because the big boss says so.

>Critic was stealing simpsons thunder and G-man was super jelly. That's why he used his clout at fox to get the critic killed by moving it to a shit time slot.
I don't believe you.
>>
>>82493111
But that's false. He also wrote all the original shorts for the Tracey Ullman show.
>>
>>82491327
Doesn't explain why he was fine with the Spinal Tap crossover two seasons before.

>>82491720
This.

>>82491279
The clipshows were often memorable for their new material too, but they hated doing those just as much. It's cheap. It cheapens the material to do clipshows, it cheapens the audience to expect them to hang around through it. This is just another kind of clipshow - it's another show framed through their own.

Also, Lovitz has one character and it's shit. You know how Homer basically became Castallenetta doing whatever the fuck impression he wanted in the booth this week for a throwaway bit? Lovitz is that. He's a voice guy nobody wants to tell to shut up.

Yup, pretty much, he got so scared by the flotty animation from the pilot even if it tried its very best to be actually fluid and animated and granted the pilot (the unaired one) got some pretty darn horrid animation at times, if onlye he knew about outsourcing to Any other japanese studio other than TMS because fuck FamiCUNT
>>
>>82491720
and in fairness, people did already think it was made by the same people, because it was the only other animated adult sitcom and it FELT very simpsonsy.
>>82494384

Jesus christ I fucking almost spilled my drink cringing over this

look at the fucking detailing in the skin. It takes a steady hand, impressive knowledge of artistic anatomy, and fucking hours to texture an entire headpiece

and he fucking goes and starts poking it deeply and unevenly
>>
>>82491279
Yet he okayed the Family Guy crossover. Fuck him.
>>
>>82504983
Not to defend the fact that that happened at all, but that was officially a Family Guy episode.

I'm sure permission was given in some way for the Simpsons characters/Springfield to be used, but it probably came from Al Jean or someone instead of Groening.
>>
>>82506038
yea, that was the thing

it wasn't a "crossover" at all
>>
>>82498379
Yeah, he wrote all 47 Tracey shorts and did the original design... but that's about it.
When Fox greenlit the Simpsons in 1989 the first thing they did was change the designs for ones made by David Silverman. He also took care of most of the easy animation (the gruntwork being what Klasky-Csupo did, inbetweening.)
>>
>>82500983
Man, there's just something so damn poignant about the end to "Mother Simpson"... I miss when Homer was allowed to have little moments like that.
>>
We never got the Critic over here so I'd no idea this was a cross over until like 2006 when I was 14 and started using the internet

>He doesn't know how long that sort of shit takes
>He doesn't know how seriously artists take their craft

Having someone come over and start poking at at any artwork a person creates would make the artist antsy anon.

It takes FUCKING YEARS to become that good and then a fat manlett comes over and starts poking at it and you can't say shit cause he'll fire your ass so hard it'll hurt and will probably use your sculpture he butchered because it belongs to Lucasarts now?

Fuck yeah you'd be mad, even if you can't vocalise it because you won't get paid if you do
>>
>>82494765
I don't believe they aired The Critic in England
>>
>>82509022
yeah, i don't think they did either, i never saw it on tv
