Why was this fight so goddamn brutal?
>>
Every hit counts, and we see both of them having a harder time fighting after every injury.
>>
>>82470891
The lack of music when Spider-Man is getting his shit kicked in makes each hit feel like it counts. Also Toby Maguire really sells the screams of agony in this scene.

A true capekino.

>MJ and I, we're gonna have a hell of a time!

God I love Dafoe in this. Everyone always comments on the perfect casting of JJJ but Dafoe as GG is perfection too.

>>

Raimi Spidey Films are best. well the first two anyway
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWJQR6SNMF8 This scene is great, too. Raimi's history as a horror director really shines here.
>>
>>82470891
Because Raimi is a horror movie director that started with a budget of what he could find behind some couch cushions.
He knows how to make a little work go very far.
Shit like swinging the camera along the lines of action and cutting at the right time. With having grunts and reaction shots show impact as much as actual impact.
>>
>>82473139
I always thought it was strange when Drag Me To Hell came out and the trailers said, "From the director of The Spiderman Trilogy!"
You'd think they would haved mentioned Evil Dead first.
>>
>>82470891
Because it was filmed like an actual movie. These were people on camera doing stunts.
There is actual camera work and editing done to emphasise the action

Wheras modern superhero movies fights are all CGI characters shooting CGI at each other on a CGI backdrop set at a wide angle with no panning or cutting.
>>
>>82474812
Spider-Man was a lot fresher in people's minds than the Evil Dead.

The new SM in sw doesnt have weight to any of its punches. The tension with the webs is too wrong. There are good examples of good cgi. Literally any time its used for mundane things and you dont notice it. But when you go overboard with it, it ends being shit.

Keep in mind the the movie is also 15 years old. And the fight still looks good. maybe even better than CW airport one. 15 years where technology advanced a shit ton.
>>
>>82474941
Despise the fact of the cgi, he is right. It was made like a film. Not like a high budget tv show. The difference shows. It might have a silly premise, but its filmed like a film, not like a blockbuster flick.
>>
>>82473094

Even the third one had that kickass aerial fight with Pete and Harry.
>>
>>82470891
this fight is still better than anything from ASM.

Which was my biggest problem with the fight scenes in MoS. Just a bunch of punches that do no damage to each others. They literally punch each other to space and back to Earth but neither has any kind of battle damage, faigue, or even a hair out of place. No tension at all, just pure CGI spectacle and destruction porn.

The thing wrong with the 3rd one is Venom being in there for no reason. The rest of the usual complaint you here about it are just Sam Rami's typical cheese. After becoming an Evil Dead fan, I ended up liking Spider-Man 3 a lot more. Okay the Jazz club was still too much, but the rest of Emo Peter was top tier. Even the omelette scene gets complained about too much.

No music. It doesn't distract, it doesn't try to give the scene any weight. All you get is Green Goblin kicking the ever loving shit out of Spidey.

Also Defoe is fucking perfect as the Goblin. Absolutely perfect. He's so good in the role that even the shit costume doesn't weaken it.

Even cheesy as fuck lines like

>>
>>82476416
Please someone make a "just right" picture with Willem Dafoe Goblin.

Because honestly, the thing that sets him apart from most super hero movie villains these days is that Dafoe acted the FUCK out of that role. Was it hammy? Yes, but it works because he sells it, he believes in it.
A lot of the goofy bad guys in modern superhero movies you can tell the actors don't care.

See this is a thing I really like about Landis' American Alien.

When Clark is a kid he gets shot in the face with a pistol and it breaks his cheek bone, then shot in the chest with a shotgun which breaks his ribs. It makes sense because he hasn't fully realised his powers, and hasn't been under the sun too long.

Putting him up against Zod should do something similar. It should be akin to a normal bloke fighting a normal bloke not two invincible people hitting each other with Earth shattering blows that leave no trace
>>
>>82476416
>for all the shitting on Macguire as Parker

I honestly don't understand this. 90% of the criticism against Toby is "MUH FUN QUIPS". He embodied the themes and character of Peter WAY better than Garfield.
I mean jesus, ASM had Peter swearing to a dying Captain Stacy that he wouldn't be with his daughter. Then the VERY NEXT scene had him breaking that promise. So much for "with great power comes great responsibility"

I'm going to go right ahead and say it.

The Emo Parker scene makes perfect sense.

The Symbiote makes him feel stronger, more confident. So him strutting down the street being smooth as fuck makes absolute perfect sense purely because he absolutely fails at being smooth.

He's a nerd. A dweeby nerd. He wouldn't know how to act cool in the slightest so when he tries we get dancing in the street full on cheesy camp emo Parker.

You were supposed to cringe, that was the point.
>>
>>82470891
This was back when superhero films felt like real films and not commercials for sequels and spin-offs.

The point is drilled home by all of the girls he passes by laughing and looking like they're thinking "what the hell is this dude's deal".

Raimi should've just stuck with one vision, the flip-flop between "lol Peter thinking he's smooth" and "damn son Peter got real smooth" is jarring.

Fun movie overall.
>>
>>82476538
I agree. And Garfield's Peter did not seem like he wouldn't be popular. Tobey feels like an awkward, borderline autist, kinda weird-looking dude. Garfield is a sexy skateboarding hipster photographer. He honestly seems like he should be the coolest kid at the school but he somehow has no friends.
>>
>>82476654
Sprites were of tip-top quality, but the game was very repetitive and bland.
>>
>>82476650
ok, but i don't want to wait for the next movie for a character arc to complete. its was a bullshit scene and the movie made no attempt at saying this was the wrong decision.

its the same excuse people made for MoS with all the collateral damage. "They'll address it in the sequel!"
>>
>>82476416
>>82476538
>90% of the criticism against Toby is "MUH FUN QUIPS".
To be honest, I love how awkward and dopey Spider-Man's jokes are in the original Spider-Man movie. It's like, Peter is still new at this so he's not the fucking master of banter yet.
>>
>>82476699
People project too much on Garfield just because he didn't dress like a 1950's poindexter and had nice hair. Skateboarding isn't "cool" since the early 2000's, photography isn't particularly cool, and he was not "sexy" at all in-universe. Also not a hipster.
>>
>>82476698
Girls like confidence, Anon. And the purpose of the scene was to show that the change in attitude was improving his life.
>>
>>82476698
Betty Brant gives him bedroom eyes, but I guess that's a reference to the early comics where she was a love interest.

Jonahs face when Parker is sat in his chair cracks me up every fucking time.

Jonah is one of my all time favourite comic book characters and Simmons is a big part of that
>>
>>82476749
He's an obviously attractive guy, and neither of those hobbies is uncool. There is absolutely no reason for him to be unpopular, unless he's shit at social cues, and that never seems to be the case in the movie.
>>
>>82476735
It was demanded by the studio, but I honestly don't mind it. Especially since it doesn't specifically points out Peter is going to date Gwen again, just speak to her again since he was ignoring her. That's how I interpreted it when I watched the movie, and I feel it is as valid as any other interpretation. A small, bittersweet victory.
>>
>>82476749
yea except Peter isn't even treated like a loser in ASM. Besides Flash, he's a pretty normal kid. compared to the original where Peter is shit on by practically everyone
>>
>>82476538
>>82476699
People often say Tobey either wasn't a good Spider-Man or Peter Parker.
Those people never read Ditko-era Spider-Man.

>>82476609
Yes, Emo Peter wasn't actually supposed to be cooler. It was nerdy Pete thinking he was hot shit, so while it worked on 2 women there were dozens that thought he was being an asshole.

>goodlooking
In high school that's half the battle won.
>skateboarding
Where I went to high school in the mid-2000s skateboarding was considered cool. I grew up near the beach so maybe that has something to do with it. But even if it isn't considered cool, you would at the very least have a group a other skaters as friends. And he skates in the hallways during school hours after teachers specifically tell him not to. Disobeying authority is one of the coolest things you can do in high school.
>photography isn't particularly cool
Its isn't particularly uncool either.
>not "sexy" at all in-universe
Pic related. Ask any girl you know. They will tell you he is sexy. I knew so many girls who only went to the movie only to ogle Garfield.
>not a hipster
His camera was an old-school film camera. The exact kind that a hipster would use. People who actually care about photography would use some super nice modern camera. Hipsters are the only people who still use film.
>>
>>82476812
Everyone is cheering as he gets his ass beaten and some guy even kicks his camera while he's doing. People barely remember his name too.
>>
>>82476922
>Hipsters are the only people who still use film.
This isn't entirely true. There are still some things that are easier to do with film, artwise, than with digital, especially if you don't have the money for powerful editing software.
>>
>>82476922
I mean in-universe.

Tobey Maguire is attractive too and he's treated as some kind of Quasimodo.
>>
Raimi's movies are more over the top, whereas ASM1 aspired to be more realistic. So Maguire was a more over-the-top, borderline caricature nerd, whereas Garfield was a more realistic loner type seen in today's high schools.

Honestly, they both worked within their settings. Garfield would be a pussy destroyed in the exaggerated early 2000's Raimiworld, and Garfield would be a literal fish out of water comedy character in the scaled-down early 2010's Webbworld.
>>
>>82476982
That picture is "in-universe." That is his exact wardrobe and hairstyle for the entire film. Tobey may not be quasimodo but, again, ask any girl you know what she thinks of Tobey Maguire. They won't immediately start gushing about how hot he is like they will with Garfield. Most girls I know think Tobey is weird-looking.
>>
>>82477031
>whereas Garfield was a more realistic loner type seen in today's high schools.
Yeah not really.
He'd still be really popular based on his hobbies and demeanour
>>
this is off topic but can i just add how poorly ASM portrayed Uncle Bens death?

in the original, peter uses his powers to win money in wrestling. then allows a thief to escape even when the wreslting manager was calling for help. later, this same thief kills uncle ben, thus teaching peter the importance of "with great power comes great responsibility"

in ASM, peter just happens to be in a convenience store buying chocolate milk when a thief arrives. after he escapes, the clerk asks peter why he didn't do anything. but why would the clerk expect a random patron to stop an armed robber? peter didn't show he had powers, and hadn't even used them for any gains up to that point in the movie. the lesson is muddled by the movie trying its damn hardest to avoid copying the original.
>>
>>82477042
In-universe he's nothing special. You're applying real people's standards to the fictional universe. Look at all the Hollywood movies where "hideous" girls are just hot chicks with frumpy hair and glasses.
>>
>>82477080
Yeah, Raimi's origin story was picture perfect.

Well, until he fucked it up in 3
>>
>>82477080
Peter was using his powers for personal gain, though, such as humilliating Flash in basketball. The whole point is that, in the scene beforehand, Uncle Ben told Peter about the Parkers' philosophy that if have the power to help someone, it's your responsability to do so, and Peter ignored that because he was angry and broody. The fact what pushed him over the edge was such a frivolous thing as a cashier being a dick about chocolate milk compounds to Peter's hubris and his belated perceival of his own egoism. That's a pretty good set up.

The actual death itself, though, was slightly wonky, with Uncle Ben going for the gun out of the blue. The thief should have at least grabbed it and aimed at the cashier before Uncle Ben stepped in.

Honestly, the deleted version is much better and more heartbreaking, and should have been used instead.
>>
>>82477093
So he's a nerd because he lives in some weird alternate universe where social rules and standards of attraction are inverted? Everything in the movie indicates Peter should be a really well-liked guy, but you're just ignoring that based on the assumption that this fictional universe has completely different rules than the real one? Because that's a bullshit argument.
>>
>>82477080
You forgot to mention that the clerk was being a colossal dick to Peter, which is why he decided not to help him.

But other than that, I agree.

but regardless, it makes zero sense why the clerk expected peter to do anything. its supposed to say that peter should have helped even if the clerk was a jerk, but from the clerks perspective, peters just a normal dude.

compared to the original, where the manager knew what peter was capable of. so it adds to the guilt by showing peter actively refusing someones call to aid because of spite
>>
>>82477380

Those are still some of the oddest and most painful sounding voice effects in any cape movie

I think the two gods fighting but incapable of hurting each other thing will really work for Shazam. You get to play up that while Black Adam and Cap are physically matched, it's Billy that loses when he gives in to save lives and wins when he outsmarts Adam.

That would be Nolan Batman.

Overacting sure, but if I heard THAT coming for me I'd shit myself.

>Ultimate Spider-Man version

Uncle Ben just being a poet out of nowhere is more laughable

Same with Aunt May in the old movies. Everyone just gives random speeches out of nowhere and it's silly as shit.

That's the beauty of Raimi's Spiderman films. They legitimately feel like comic books as opposed to soulless cash-ins on the superhero movie fad.

You don't hurt Superman by physically hurting him, you hurt Superman by hurting the people he's protecting.
MoS fails at both.

So?
Buff guy with pushy personality is gonna make 50% of women wet and 50% of women laugh.

It wouldn't be hard to slightly depower him.
I thought Morrison's Action Comics did a good job of making him vulnerable without nerfing the hell out of him.

Thing is, superman is OP by design.
Making him less powerful when he's already supposed to be holding back is stupid.
The only way to get to Superman is through the people he's close to or just helpless bystanders that he MUST help.
Superman is boring, he will always be boring; you can't really have stakes when the guy in question can turn back time by flying around the planet really fast and just can't be beat at anything without a dose of supposedly "rare" Kryptonite. Kryptonite itself is just a patchwork way to actually try and create a sense of suspense, but it starts getting silly when it pops up anytime the writers need to pad shit out and dangle a set of keys over us and call it stakes.
There's so little that can harm him or stand a chance against him without it sounding like an asspull, because Superman himself is a hammerspace of asspulls.
Superman is the guy that can and will weather anything with a smile and save everyone because he's that powerful.

>superman is boring because he's so powerful
He's interesting for that very reason. With most heroes, like Spidey, you can just throw in a new villain of the week and create conflict because they actually pose a threat to him. That gets old real fast, but that's how the vast majority of heroes work. Have threatening villain appear, fight for awhile, hero wins, rinse repeat. The thing I never understand about people complaining about Superman never being threatened is...NO superhero is ever threatened. It doesn't take long to realize that Spider-man, besides being vastly underpowered compared to some heroes, will ALWAYS win. That's just the nature of the industry. Even a shake-up of the status quo will only be temporary. Peter will always win, get back in control of his body, rise from the dead, etc.

With Superman, you can't rely on random threatening villains showing up to suddenly make the comic SEEM interesting(even though second-rate writers do it all the time). To make a good Superman comic, you actually have to explore interesting themes about power and humanity. In this light, Superman is one of the most compelling heroes around. Bane can't show up for a sudden shake-up (except Doomsday, I guess, but we all know how that turned out). Instead, writers have to focus on character rather than "epic" action scene #278. How would the world react to a being so powerful? How would such a being view humans? How does Superman get out of bed every day knowing that the entire human race is relying on him to save the world EVERY SINGLE DAY? How can he weather such heavy responsibility day in and day out? Why is it worth it to him? Why doesn't he take over the world and fix all of humanity's problems from a position of power? The problem isn't that you can't make an interesting Superman story, its that hacks don't know how to write an interesting Superman story. Whereas any hack can write "Venom returns, beats shit out of Spidey."
