Look, Aquaman is fighting an uphill battle with the public. The biggest source of Aquaman's image in the general non-comics public's mind is probably Superfriends where he was a joke. There really hasn't been any popular image that reached the general public since then to combat then until now.

And for decades in the comics he WAS a useless bitch. It was only in the last 20+ years that he's been changed into something cool, but only the tiny segment of the population who reads comics would know that.

So the public is just going by what it knows of the character, which is that he's a useless bitch. The only way to fight that is to replace it with an even more powerful impression. The new movies seem to want to do this, but since they seemed to destined to tank thanks to Snyder, you're probably going to be stuck with a few more decades of Aquaman = bitch.
