For a very long time during the beginning of her run, they kept her identity a secret from everyone, including the reader. This meant they couldn't (or just didn't) give her any kind of character development, and a lot of her book was devoted to the "mystery" and a whole bunch of red herrings. Beyond that though, it's obvious the writers didn't really care about Thor or the Asguardians. A lot of characters get their personalities fucked with to make Jane look better, and it's no wonder Thor fans didn't like it. Plus, she gets powers no other wielder of Mjolnir ever had, without even so much as a pitty technobabble explanation. Taken on its own, it's not a bad series, but that's not possible because of Marvel's conjoined universe. You'd need to be more or less new to the entire multi-verse not to find anything to dislike about the comic.

You know what would actually be interesting?

It would be a woman who manages to pick up the hammer and turns into the male thor except without his experience and memories. Everyone will think that it's Thor but she has to manage being a handsome hunky male with urges to drink, sex and smash things while having to fight against her female memories feelings that this is wrong and she shouldn't do this things.

Then it slowly lets her come to an understanding of what mean male means and it's not being superior or inferior and not that being male means that you have a priviledge but something that offers another whole set of problems and situations that you have to deal with.
