The context is that an EMP made blasters useless so they grabbed a bunch of lightsabers from a hutt who collects jedi artifacts. I thought it was a cool scene, though it does feel like pretty blatant fanservice.

>non force users (aside form leia) are able to properly wield lightsabers with relative ease

It pissed me off in TFA and it pisses me off here. It's hard to even justify leia using a lightsaber because despite having a connection to the force she hadn't gone under any training before this. As far as I'm concerned han, chewie, and even leia should have all lost some limbs trying to pull stupid shit like this.
>>
I never understood peoples anger with these comics. There are like 4 or 5 good stories in the old EU and half of them are 8 or so page long shorts from Star Wars tales. It's not like you lost anything worthwhile. Just went from one flavor of shit to another.

It's just as someone else already explained in this thread anon, the force is what allows jedi to wield a weightless blade that can lop off limbs with less effort than it takes for someone to rip up paper. Even with the EU not being canon non-force users using a lightsaber is fucking retarted.

>>
>>81674507

If the blade is weightless and carries no momentum, you'd be surprised at how difficult to handle.

It's super easy to injure yourself with any real sword if you haven't trained and don't use it how it should be used.
>>
>>81674651
Why?
>>
>>81673016

>>

yes, so you can still use it and swing it. But you can't swing it masterfully like those with the force. So you can still use it?

>>
>>81674696

>>
>>81674347
Don't quote me on this, but I suspect it originated in the WEG RPG as a means to keep non-Jedi characters away form lightsabers.
>>
>>81674608
Weren't lightsabers originally super heavy? Are you sure you're not just an autist who can't accept that there's no reason a person can't take a laser sword and swing it around and not die immediately like an idiot? Shit Han Solo used it to cut open a tauntaun.
>>
>>81674676

>>
>>81674507

>>
>>81674726

>>
>>81674735
yea so you just swing it yourself? i dont get how it not having momentum would affect it, please explain someone so i may learn why this is dumb
>>
>>81674735
Why are lightsabers weightless at all now? They're not literally made of light.
>>
>>81674726
How much of the EU have you read?

None, right? Because it's all for autistic nerds? And you're so much better than them?

Aaron's Star Wars is just pandering and fan service, I won't lie. But the other comics have actually been pretty good (Darth Vader, Shattered Empire), some even great (Kanan, Lando). I can't speak for the novels though, I haven't most of them.
>>
>>81674794

No, they're made of Plasma, which has no mass, thus, no weight.
>>
>>81674780

Hilt will have some angular momentum. It's like me preferring a good heavy kitchen knife like a Sabatier over some light ceramic thing. I'd be pretty awkward with a lightsaber, the guy doing fancy work with a Global or whatever would be fine.

>>81673016

TFA isn't EU, it's Star Wars. The MAIN Star Wars.

EU is the comics, cartoons, books and (some) video games.
>>
>>81674790

>In-universe, a lightsaber is basically a controlled, fixed-length plasma stream that can be used as a sword. As such, the blade wouldn't have any mass (or infinitesimal mass if you want to get technical about E=mc2).

Anyone familiar with fencing or swordplay knows that the weight of the handle and blade, and thus the overall balance of the weapon, is critically important while fighting. A sword that is too blade-heavy is unwieldy; it is difficult to start, stop, and change the path of the blade as it's swung, which is vital to outmaneuvering your opponent in a duel. Conversely, a sword with too light a blade (equivalently, too heavy a hilt) is too easy to swing around. it's hard to "feel" where the blade is, and thus to make the minute changes needed to block a blow or land one. It can also be just as exhausting, in a different way, to wield such a sword; because most of the mass is behind your hand, it takes muscle power to point the blade forward instead of upward, while a balanced weapon would point directly forward from the user's hands. You also get no mechanical advantage while swinging it.

Obviously, out-of-universe the props were full "swords" that were then rotoscoped to paint the beam blade over the white wooden (later plastic) dowel that protruded from the saber. This gives the actual prop used by the actors a more realistic weight and balance, which can be seen in the duels (Darth Maul has to heave a bit to get that double-saber staff moving, and you can see the effort behind a full baseball swing of the sword by Luke or Vader in the original trilogy).

>>
>>81674899
>Repetition of what? People using lightsabers? It's Star Wars. They have lightsabers.

LUKE had a light saber. The Jedi order had a lightsaber. Those three guys up top? never had a light saber.

>>no real narrative merit
>That's an opinion.

Uh, yeah. That's why I said it. Pointing out that doesn't actually defend this.
>>
>>81674887
The difference is getting paid?

No, that would have some weird implications, consider Saxton for example.
>>
>>81674900

because people assume thats how one would hold a sword as well based on shitty movies and such.
so if an artist was looking for reference for a scene, they would consistently find images of people holding swords like that.

the same way that every lightsaber wielder has been depicted holding the blade since its inception.
>>
If you can swing a flashlight around and not hit yourself with light couldn't you do the same with a lightsaber?
>>
>>81674893
It expands on Lando as a character, it shows us why he chose to leave his life of smuggling and adventure behind.
>>
>>81674887
>It made me want to read actual good. original sci-fi.
Well theres your problem right there. Star wars isn't sci-fi. Its just fantasy in space.
>>
>>81674936
I said I tried reading those when TFA was coming out you idiot.

>>81674977
No. If you came up with an idea that has some resemblance to a classical story or was inspired by something else, that's original. If you're writing for somebody elses universe it's fanfiction.
>>
>>81674940
cool, thanks. so they just got lucky like they did repeatedly thruoughout the OT which is why no one was maimed. makes sense and checks out to me.
>>
>>81674999

so its good just because Lando was such a blank slate, character-wise.
ok that makes sense I can understand how people who liked the character might have enjoyed it more than I did then..
>>
>>81674956
>Those three guys up top? never had a light saber
You're right. Why is it so terrible to let them use lightsabers? That doesn't turn them into Jedi, and you don't have to be a Jedi to use one.

>>81675023
You know what I mean.
>>
>>81675050

Who said lightsabers are weightless? If we have to go by the OT's canon only, i don't think there's any indication of such.
On the contrary, since the butter-cutter extravaganza still wasn't a thing many times we see the sabers hitting objects that weren't other sabers without cutting through them as if they were solid, in the final fight with Vader Luke swings as if it had weight
>>
>>81675175
oh shit, I meant to reply to an earlier comment in the thread over finn's use of a lightsaber in TFA when I said "I died"
>>
>>81674667
He didn't have to, the other guy with a lightsaber cut Finn's bits off.
>>
>>81674748
Not even. WEG specifically states that anybody can own or wield one but GMs are advised not to let their non-Jedi players have them just because they want them. They provide some rules for rarity and such to make them more difficult to find.

Of course Jedi are more effective with them but the base damage and difficulty is the same for all players. WEG was really consistent with this stuff for the most part.
>>
>>81675222

Because he pros the actors use have weight.
>>
>>81675222
>>81675272

meant "props"
>>
>>81675272
But the actor was told to swing that way, to raise his arms and strike down on Vader so hard, wasn't he? But still, if we want to ignore the potential proofs that they aren't weightless, where's the indication that they are?
>>
>>81674900
Because the nuances of holding a samurai-style blade (katana, wakizashi, nodachi, etc etc) are lost on the layman. They assume it's a baseball-bat grip when it's not, even the primary gripping finger is different as are the positions of the hands on the grip.
>>
>>81673016
The new comics are all mostly shit (Kanan's was pretty good) but the old EU/Dark Horse comics had a lot of duds, too. Force-cancelling iguanas, Dark Empire, Cade Skywalker and Legacy in general. Sure there were good stuff like Darth Vader and the Ghost Prison, but a lot of it was just as mediocre or bad as the new stuff. This new stuff is stunted pretty hard by being shoehorned interquels, though.

Force Awakens isn't really Expanded Universe.
It's kind of Main if anything, but I catch your drift, it expands the star wars universe but that isn't what is meant by EU.

Just ignore Force Awakens, it's only point was to gt the story to a place where Lawrence Kasdan wanted to take it back in Return of the Jedi but Lucas didn't like it.
Kasdan wanted the story to end with a dead Han Solo and a lonely/tired Luke.
The man basically used Episode 7 to fulfill his goal.
