I sorely miss the days of hand animation. Even the stuff that was done on a tight budget looked great (Hanna-Barbera), and if it had a huge budget (The Simpsons), it was fucking fantastic. Flash and computer animation in television has made everything look like shit visual-wise. The only animation that improved as a result of computers was the 90s Disney films, but I really liked the scratchy hand-drawn style of Robin Hood and Jungle Book.

I've always been a fan of taking risks on shows that might not perform well but bring something unique and fresh to the table. Shows that don't play it safe with art-style, humor, or plot. Even if they bomb at first they can still give the audience a taste of something different that will open them up to more adventurous content down the line.

It's a lot of things really, but I'd say the most damning problem is that the network just doesn't know how to handle animated shows very well. They aren't good at building an audience for them. South Park is the exception, but that's mostly because it's already established at this point, and in the beginning it found the hook of being extremely controversial while looking like something for pre-schoolers.

Now, to be fair to Comedy Central, it's not that they don't want an animated block or haven't tried to cultivate one, but they give up too easy.

For all their failings, they should try emulating Fox. For every failure they've had (Napoleon Dynamite, Allen Gregory, Bordertown) they've found several successes over the years (American Dad!, Futurama, Bob's Burgers), and even continue to take chances on weirder material like Golan the Insatiable which they aired last summer.

But the difference is that Fox has two cornerstone shows to build its animated lineup around (The Simpsons, Family Guy) whereas CC only has South Park. And unlike The Simpsons and Family Guy, which have different types of humor but are ultimately more similar than they are dissimilar (and this goes for other shows like Bob's Burgers as well, which is at least comparable to the former), most of the shows CC has tried to pair with South Park have been too different. Can you imagine a lineup of Ugly Americans, Brickleberry, Moon Beam City and South Park? I'm not saying it's impossible, but it would be difficult to cement an audience that stay for all 4 shows.

That said, Ugly Americans and Futurama actually did make a good pair... Unfortunately they only teamed up the shows for 9 episodes during the summer of 2011, despite being so tonally and comedically similar. Ugly Americans was canceled later that season, while Futurama was renewed for one more.

Still, there's probably no other network that would've aired Moombeam City (maybe FXX); for all their failings, at least they take risks
