CN held a contest where the top 2 winners were guaranteed a show. Browngarten and Quintel were the winners and Regular Show got made first.
CN isn't backpedaling anything, they never liked this show and the people who greenlit it don't work there any more.

Why is absurdist humor shittier in animation? Like, I find comedy groups like Aunty Donna fucking hilarious but when this kind of humor is translated to animation it just seems shit.

In live action, it clashes with reality.
In animation, it's a fantasy clashing with fantasy.
But the absurd doesn't clash or seem out of place in the absurd, it's just a mass of blandness that melts together at that point.

Browngardt's guarantee lead him to making Secret Mountain Fort Awesome, not Uncle Grandpa (even though that was the pilot that won), Uncle Grandpa came after that.
Secret Mountain Fort Awesome was cancelled but for some reason they felt like he deserved another show so they took the Uncle Grandpa concept and made it a full-fledged series.
