I have a feeling that's exactly what's happening with RWBY Chibi. Rumor has it that the animation team is switching over entirely to Maya for Volume 4, and it's possible that Chibi is a way of easing the animation team (parts of which have been suffering through Poser for the last two years) into the new workflow.

The lighting is also a big part of what makes that still look so shitty. Thing is, it's been well-known since day 1 that RWBY character models do not work well with any kind of lighting effects (pic related), a few brief shots in the White trailer aside. So why does RWBY Chibi (going by that single still, anyway) have lighting turned back on?

Here's the thing: while it's better than the alternative, the total lack of any lighting on the character models in RWBY is one of the major reasons why the show looks so cheap, particularly in scenes that aren't action-heavy. So I'm thinking that RT is going to use Chibi as a testbed for trying different approaches to lighting, to see if they can't alleviate some of that cheapness.

Yeah, that's kind of the point; I didn't say they'd gotten it right yet. But a show with simpler models and more limited animation might give the animation team more time to experiment with different lighting...effects, I guess? I know fuck-all about 3D animation so I don't know how many options they've got in that regard, but I know the big Hollywood animation studios can make pretty much any style look good with lighting. Maybe RT has the budget and manpower to start moving in that direction this volume.

Honestly I don't know why people keep defaulting to overpowered, veer off cliff turns, with the ideas for Jaune's development.

The third volume and some bits of the first and second showcased what he is.

He rather not charge in chin first, but will when his friends ignore his warnings, he comes up with plans quickly and he is a reactive throw shit until it sticks style of adventurer.

How this always leads to indestructible, healing factor stuff where he acts like an Yang tier idiot is baffling.

Crescent rose consolidated the concept to allow for only two modes. It's scythe mode looks to be thicker for a stronger cut allowing for it to be the primary melee form, where as Qrow's uses sword for it's main mode and scythe only for situational kills.

Ruby probably thought the Scythe was cooler and wanted that to be her weapons main form. Of course if you notice Ruby takes the same blocking stance with Penny's sword that Qrow takes with Winter, so it seems like he taught her how to wield something similar to his sword mode as well, she just opted not to use it.

Crescent Rose's gun mode however seems entirely unnecessery because it can fire in Scythe mode with no apparant difference in shots, to the point where Ruby usually doesn't bother using it.

We have no idea how Penny's design works though. People assume her soul recognized that she was "dead" when she shut off and left, but there's no way to know that. Her soul could be stored in a black box that's impossible to be easily destroyed and all they need to do is recover it and install it into the next Penny.

Alternatively if new Penny has the same memories and personality and thinks she's Penny for all intents and purposes, even if there's a different soul, who's to tell her she's not really Penny? They could get all metaphorical about it.

Miles and Kerry may refer to her and Roman as "Dead" in passing conversation in pod casts for the sake of simplicity and not complicating things, but they refuse to ever confirm a character is dead or not officially, with what we're presented in the show being the only 'Factual' information.
Even in Jen Brown's sappy tweet that everyone insists is confirmation, she never actually said "Pyrrha death". She used the words "Pyrrha's fate" and "Pyrrha's exit".

It's purposeful. Even if the characters are dead right now with no intention to bring them back, they'll never not give themselves the option.
Why do you think they chose for Roman to get swallowed up by a Grimm instead of getting torn to bits by a Beowolf? Because being turned into giblets would make it harder for him to come back and have it be explained.
