There was this one story in the '90s where Erik-the-Red shows up again and kidnaps a few X-Men, he's using robots and power dampener collars to put them in chains and cells in this secret base and he torchers Gambit to get some sort of a confession from him... etc... etc...
You know, classic supervillian stuff.
So one of the hostages is Angel (Warren Worthington III) and Warren knows there IS no "Erik-the-Red", so he goes into this dialog about how he knows it's really Scott under that mask and how they all knew it was only a matter of time before Scott cracked, and how everyone could see it coming...
... Now, at the time ... I thought that was simply a ridiculous scenario.

I get the whole visual "different Scott now" costume change but the visor is a technical limitation of his powerset, without that Ruby Quartz on his face (there's a dirty Steven Universe joke in there somewhere) he can't control his optic blasts, and last I looked you can't weave a crystal mineral into a fabric face-cowl. My biggest problem with Emma post-Gillen is that nobody actually wrote the serious, tragic side of her - she's a high-class elitist sardonic debutante, to be sure, but she's all of that to hide her sad past and massive flaws. It's a mask. When written well, she's one of the most interesting X-Men.

Due to the necessity of actually having to write her competently, it's understandable no current writer wants to use her.
