Is Golden Age Batman any good and is pick related worth it ?
Oh god, no. It's fun for the first few issues then it's just gets old. Once you're over the whole quirk of reading such old batman and the whole 40s/50s of it it's just super dumb kinda boring repetitive zaniness.
Not worth it at all. You'll get sick of it after an issue or two. You're better off reading Batman 66 if you really want that old school vibe
>>81423428
So,on a scale of 1-10,how close is it to the Adam West TV show ?
>>81423613
2, it's very unentertaining once the novelty of it wears off
>>81423295
Not at all except for "oh look the first joker appearance! The first catwoman appearance!" As actual comics their pretty bad. The art is shitty and the writing was written for 40s 10 year olds
>>81423295
do it anon, know your history
>>81423964
>>81423295
Also gotta say if you're actually considering dropping all that cash on that omnibus save your money
>>81424080
Or buy a better DC omnibus like Animal Man.
>>81424108
Yeah,I've been thinking on getting the Animal Man omnibus
>>81424297
Buy that, it's a great comic and a full contained story. Really fine work.
>>81424108
Yeah, like I didn't mean put it in a savings account just don't throw it away on GA Batman
>>81424297
The only saving grace of Golden Age Batman is Dick Sprang's art, but his run starts after the omnibus so I'd avoid it.
Sure why not
>>81424677
>HEY KID WANNA SEE A DEAD BODY
GA Batman is amazing and everyone here doesn't have respect for quality comic book art and story. It's written for a different era yes, but is in my opinion no less adult friendly then the BTAS. You need to read them with a different mindset, let yourself find the joy and quality in their perceived simplicity as they wre exploring and figuring out what kind of character Batman was and what sort of crime he faced. It's the origin of a legacy and to ignore it is to ignore the fundamental principals of the characters. The Golden Age is often far less campy then it is assumed, much less then the Silver Age. People are shot and killed, even if its not graphically, there is threat and peril and often a clever mystery.
Later golden age Batman is fun if you're in the mindset for it, when they had zany gimmick capers down to an absolute science. It's what the Adam West show is based on. The first few years is complete slapdash shit though, and the guns and bat-murder ends after about 13 issues.
>>81424800
Kane's art isn't that great, even for the time
>>81424841
Yeah that's why I recommend the Dick Sprang stuff earlier in the thread. Sprang was one of the few Golden Age artists that actually cared about the quality of his work and would try and experiment with what he was doing
>>81424841
Kane doesn't even factor in this. I think Detective 27 is the only comic where it's confirmed he drew something, and most of it was traced.
This shit is so much weirder when you think it took place in the 30s
Like seeing a freak run by in a Bat costume wouldn't even phase me in our post internet world. But like, in the 30s? That'd be fucking crazy
>>81423295
Do you like The Shadow? Because that's basically who you're reading only now he's dressed as a bat and his parents are dead.
>>81425487
Oh Bruce, nothing like sending the citizens of Gotham running in terror
>>81425394
This is one of the absolute best issues of Batman and cover art.
>>81423295
While the omnibus looks sexy the only real "golden age" (think "Gothic Burton" batman is the first 12 issues or so, which is all collected in the volume one of batman chronicles which is cheap as fuck.
If you are into campy batman tho the omnibus might be worth grabbing
they better get around to GA Plastic Man and Captain Marvel omnibuses, although it seems like the latter is a lost cause given the copyright issues, thank god they're public domain I guess
>>81425995
Both are on the public domain site. But it's really dependent on if DC sees it as being worthwhile to reprint in omnibi.
They planned to reprint the GA Monster Society of Evil story but held off on it because they were switching publishing regimes and didn't want accusations of racism thrown at them over the old comics.
>>81424297
For an Omnibus, for sure go for Animal Man, and check out cheaper options for Golden Age Batman, like the Chronicles collections
>>81424080
I kind of wish that there was a smaller version of the Golden Age Omnibus that just had the really notable first issues, because I'd be willing to pay like $15 for something like that, even if it was just for novelty.
>>81427055

Why in God's name would you think WestBats is anything like Golden Age Batman? It was fanboys-gone-professional who reacted AGAINST the Adam West show's influence by making the comics, or other media evoke the dark, gothic vibe of the original comics. WestBats didn't go around casually defenestrating crooks.
>>81424783
Its weird that both the first batman story and first superman start off with both heroes being fairly well known. Its a good way to get the reader straight into the action...modern writers can learn from this
>>81427055
I think DC is releasing smaller paperback versions of the Omnibi.
>>81424841
It's a good thing he never actually fucking drew it then.
>>81426462
>batman
>has a gun
DROPPPPPPPEEEDDDDDD
>>81427197
>modern writers can learn from this
But anon, it's so easy to take a story and stretch it out for six issues and sell it as a trade
>>81424800
I really, really wanna find Star-Spangled Comics scans online again - I know they exist somewhere. Those Golden Age Robin solo stories were AMAZING, because the criminals give no fucks about trying to straight-up murder a child at every opportunity. Earth-2 Dick don't shiv.
>>81423613
This stuff is way to early to be Adam West.
If you want a sampler, buy yourself Batman Chronicles and see if it tickles your fancy. Same content, just a lot less of it, and low grade paper stock.
>>81427055
Those exist dammit. Buy Batman in the 40's or anything like that, it's a smattering of key issues from that decade. Similarly, if you're interested in one character, look around for collections of Batman with that character, same deal as the decade stuff, but spread all around. Batman and Superman have a ton of trades like that.
>>81425904
Reminder that Thomas tried to attack Chill.
>>81424932
And Milton Caniff, who ghost pencilled for Kane quite a bit during the Golden Age.
>>81428626
Huh? I don't think Caniff ever worked for Kane.
>>81427110
>>81427217
I think that anon meant just select key issues instead of full chronological runs in a cheaper format
Break.
>>81429066
Those first two panels are pretty nifty for a Golden Age comic.
>>81425418
>New York night
Oh? Batman started out in New York?
>>81429414
Yeah.
>>81429414
Yes, and GA Superman initially lived in Cleveland.
Always wanted to read some of the older batman stuff but didnt want to read Detective comics but the later Batman centric comic. Can i just do that instead?
>>81429628
I never download batman i only have tec on my drive.
>>81429628
It's not like you'll be jumping into long ongoing plot lines
>>81429628
It's not like many (any?) collections have the non-Batman related Detective Comics stories.
Might our storyteller post Batman #1 so we can get a look to Golden Age Joker?
>>81429693
I have both downloaded so I wasn't sure what to jump into since I have never really touched these really early comics.
>>81429695
>>81429749
I guess I can just read a few here and there then to get a feel of the oldies then?

Dr Strange did as well
I love the fact that Batman Never actually shoots anybody here.
His first actual shot is on the vampires and next issue he shoots at some goons. Literally after than he was banned from using guns by ediotrial and they made the no gun rule.
So its easy to headcanon the twin trauma of his first actual monster caused him to take his code
>>81425790
Seriously this is the first time we see Batman outright thrown like this. Broken will, HORRIFIED.
Bruce sees the REAL boogieman for the first time and cleans up his act
>>81426803
Wow, that bottom panel is so un-golden age-like. It's like a leap years froward into Batman history.
>>81425904
ALSO NOTE THIS IS WHEN HIS ORIGIN FIRST APPEARS
Seriously. Batman vs The Mad Monk may be one of the most critic Batman books period.
First multi parter, first bad guy with powers, the batarang and bat gyro(first bat gadgets) eerie as fuck woodcut style art, great cover.
And it lead directly to Bruces origin and his no kill code.

And Morrison used Oberon Sexton when Kane left such cryptic names behind?
>>81424420
time
>>81431263
Fun fact about this is that, for a long time, Hugo Strange didn't come back after this (so you could probably assume Batman killed him). It wasn't until Steve Englehart worked on Detective Comics in the 70's that Strange resurfaced, alive and well on Earth-1.
But on Earth-2, where the Golden Age Hugo Strange stories also happened, it turned out the E2 Hugo Strange was heavily injured by the fall and required risky surgery. He ended up looking really fucked up afterwards and wanted to die, and it lead into some story in Brave and the Bold where Earth-1 Batman traveled to Earth-2.

>get in my car, small orphan child
>>81424800
>GA Batman is amazing and everyone here doesn't have respect for quality comic book art and story.
GA's Art is largely traced and it's story, especially for the first few was plagiarized.
Finger and Robinson managed to sneak quite a few gems in there, but you have to sift through a whole lot of shit to get at them.

Hey at what point did Gotham get a more or less perpetual full moon while Batman was out punching bad guys?

This is great.

It's a real hoot when a story takes place over several nights and the moon is still full. And way too goddamn big.
>>81423295
Terrible comic. This comes from someone who reads and likes a lot of Golden Age stuff. Bob Kane is one of the worst artists ever to work at DC.
