The audience you see on the internet aren't the kids who watch the show. This internet fanbase is 50% waifufags and 50% Cumblr nerds. Also because Steven is a white male.

Yup. Glad someone else thinks so. 99% of fanart throughout the show's run has consisted of Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl, without including Steven. It may just be an unconscious thing, but it annoys me how little attention is payed to the actual main character.

Well they are all main characters, but I do get sad when people make art of them and not include Steven, or when they say that they've made art of the Crystal Gems and then the art doesn't have Steven, or when in any way it's implied that Steven isn't a Crystal Gem, because Steven spent all of Season 1 trying to become a Crystal Gem and proving that he was worthy of becoming one, with him finally being recognised as a Crystal Gem in Season 2.

Most people I know say that Steven is the best character. His growth as a character and realization of the world around him is one of the few things the show takes its time with, which unlike a lot of the drama, makes his characterization feel like a gradual and natural progression.

Pearl has fans because she's all broken and insecure and people relate to that.

My problem with Steven is that he's very idealized. The show goes out of its way to establish that the other three characters are all very flawed individuals, while Steven's biggest flaw is that he's mildly annoying sometimes. Even his naievity is played up as a positive most of the time.

As someone who has a little brother that was a complete dick, Steven has one thing that 99% of little brothers don't have going for them.

His heart is entirely in the right place, maybe its just because I'm early in the series but he seems like a mildly alright kid.

And I love the way his father is shown to obviously be suffering from the death of his wife, but he's still a good father figure for Steven, not an asshole and basically just needs a break to get back on his feet.
Its a nice, healthy, complex male character rather than bumbling sitcom dad.

I'm not sure that the official model sheet's changed, but he's been consistently drawn thinner lately. In fact it's kind of weird going back to the first few episodes and seeing just how explicitly fat he was. Pic highly related.

SU loves using anime themes here and there, and it's a common theme in anime for the character to slowly age as the show goes on. I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if this was intentional.

To expand on that, it's actually pretty likely that Steven's early obsession with food was there to highlight that he was fat, so that it would become apparent to the view later that Steven was getting thinner. I don't think he's talked about food like he did early on in a long time, if at all.

I think it's more that they're just making him cuter by giving him a proportionally bigger head than they used to, rather than him canonically getting slimmer; style progression and what not.

The characters look completely different from scene to scene and episode to episode anyways, so you could really make any crack theory based on stylistic differences (the cast are actually sneople in Hellen's episodes, Garnet's thighs grow twice as big in Paul's episodes). Until it's acknowledged in canon I think people just don't like the fact that Steven is chubby.
