I like the MCU jokes and quips.

I also like the incredibly self-important and serious monologues of the Nolan films, the campy weirdness of the RaimiMan movies and the balance of the good Fox X-Men movies.

i'm gonna list every pro and con to the avengers by memory, because what else would this thread be good for?

+the spin around shot right before the final battle that got copied a lot
+the one-take where everyone has a chance to show off
+ruffalo and norton banners both have their pros, but i like the ruffalo hulk look more
+loki is always pretty good
+coulson's involvement in the movies came to a dramatic end
+cap puts a pretty decent plan into action

-captain america's suit is fucking awful
-captain america is severely underpowered
-shoehorning in hill
-the cosmic scenes were way too darkly lit and weren't even that interesting
-chitauri that could be taken down with small handgun bullets
-cinematography is really flat and TV quality, thanks joss

all things considered, avengers 1 wasn't bad. not incredible, but it managed to get everyone together and not fall apart on itself. that's what the sequel was for

Cape stories require conflict. Fuck that, ALL stories require conflict. The greater the conflict - the greater the tension - the more thrilling the experience becomes.

When everyone jokes all the time and the main conflict is easily beaten, then you have a run-of-the-mill MCU film.

Whedon is usually pretty good about maintining a balance though. One of his best gifts as a TV writer has always been amping up the jokes right to the point where it almost becomes too cute, and then dialing it back slightly.

Then he does the same thing with the melodrama. What you end up with is a show that is very melodramatic (without being too much) but also very goofy and subversive (without being too much)


This is why Buffy was great.

When you go serious, you need the thematic depth, and well-written script to back it up.

BvS did NOT have any of these things. It didn't even have acting that was anything more than serviceable by anyone except Jeremy Irons.
When I think of a good 'dark' movie, I think of shit like Apocalypse Now, or Drive, or Eraserhead, or Unforgiven. You know -- actual fucking cinema.


BvS is schlock that apes the look of something better without having any read ideas to back it up, and comes with a plot so bad that it would be embarrassing in an early 90's action flick.

It is paper-thin garbage. Pretty at times, maybe. But nothing more than that
