What does /co/ think about Garth Ennis? I've noticed there's been a lot of loving/trashing of his work the past couple of days.
>>
I recently bought the Stitched short film that he wrote and directed.

It was okay, I guess.
>>
Hitman is his magnum opus. Among the best books of all time.

That's pretty normal. Average Ennis thread goes like:

>TRY HARD EDGY FEDORA CUNT
>GOATEST GOAT OF ALL GOAT
>EDGEEEEEE
>WAR COMICSSSSS
>>
I enjoy many of his works.
>>
>>81263020
I've found him to be competent at the very least, and amazing at best.

And Hitman is absolutely alright.
>>
Always decent.
Sometimes the absolute best there is, I'm not even joking. Hitman and Preacher are masterpieces and his work on Punisher and Nick Fury should of course also be mentioned as high notes. I haven't read too many of his war comics, it's not my bag.

Also he's an unexpectedly great romance writer to be honest, and I liked his family drama oneshot with Kit and her family (during his run on Hellblazer).
>>

With that said he's hit and miss but more often than not, he's good. He's done some really really great stuff but lately he's been working with a lot of shitty artists. I'm enjoying the heck out of Johnny Red right now and his artist is very good.
>>
Who here /UnknownSoldier/?

Loved Hitman, about to start the Slavers arc in his Punisher MAX series. Thought All-Star Section 8 was a fun read and his Secret Wars book was okay.

Okay. It definitely has some weak parts, like everything else in the world. Overall it's great.

I also really like the Kev Saga and Unknown Soldier. Kev is a really funny comic.
>>
I like his stuff. Difficult to pick a favourite. His big series (Preacher, Hitman, The Boys, Punisher) all have very strong points, and some very weak ones. He consistently strikes a balance between

>serious storytelling
>character study
>comedy
>that particular type of gore and humor that can only be described as lolEnnis

I guess the problem comes down to some (most?) people liking only one or two of these aspects in his work and sort of wishing the others weren't there. Just a Pilgrim, for instance, reads like a perfect post-apocalyptic western... then all the silly stuff like the double pirate and the big testicle are introduced. Do they detract from the story? In a way they do. But that's Ennis. He wants to be serious and have fun at the same time. Nothing wrong with that, it's just sometimes hard to tune in to that wavelenght.
>>
I am a fan of most of the stuff of his i read.

Stitched was....eh it was pretty good. It was a surprisingly effective horror movie in comic form with an interesting original idea. I just wasn't all that engrossed.

Hitman is fucking awesome. Great book, a whole lot of heart in it.

Punisher is....fuckin frank. It's hillarious, entertaining, nasty.

Preacher is up there as one of my fav comics of all time and is just an incredible and unique story.

The Boys is honestly my fav thing of his by far. As much as i loved preacher nothing has been on the same level as the boys for me. The characters, the ridiculous situations, the world it created. I love how it was such a perfect outlet for that part of Ennis that clearly despises the super hero. And holy shit the way it ends.

So yeah overall i dig his stuff. Cept crossed. i think crossed is absolute shit goreporn riding the zombie crazes coattails.

Edgelordest of edgelords. Once you get over childish excitation over "shocking" stuff ("Oh fuck! This guy is fucking a sex doll... made of meat! Oh wow!") he's pretty boring.
>>
>>81263020
he used to be cool in 90s but nowadays he is outdated and juvenile
>>
>>81269876
One of the biggest problems of preacher is that very early you get a huge drop of the biggest human depravity to the point you are desensitized and just shrug it.

As a matter of fact, when I initially read the Otis / KKK arc, I expected Otis to actually fuck a cow chopped in half, and play with intestines, livers and etc.

Imagine my disappointment, when it only turned out to be a meat doll. Fucking Yawn

Ennis also has a hateboner for alpha males like Lobo or Wolverine

>>
>>81269989
His Punisher is overrated as fuck.
Is like you people never read DeMatteis, Mackie, Dixon, Baron, DnA's stories etc.
>>
>>81269987
To be honest, I expected at least something like, reveal that all his meat is made from humans, and him fucking an intestine of a dead person, probably a black dude, with shit still inside the intestine.
But come on, fucking meat? People do that in real life.
And the worst part? I read trades out of order, so it was actually the first arc of Preacher I've read.
Like, fucking an inanimate object - that's kind of gross, but not a reveal worthy of a splash page. Like, you can find shit like this if you dig long enough on /b/.
>>
His take on Dan Dare is one of the best things to come out of the last decade. I really need to read Fury MAX. But...

But it seems like he's not trying any more. His brief run on Dynamite's Shadow ongoing was really disappointing, and I've heard his Secret Wars mini was... fine.

Also, Hitman > Preacher. There, I said it.
>>
>>81270216
That sounds nice as well.
Well like I said, earlier Preacher issues are more gross, and you can feel that Ennis lost his steam somewhere in the middle and was just meandering.
>>

>>

>DeMatteis, Mackie,

I knew about the others; what Punisher series did those two write?

Or was it just filler stories or guest spots, or something?
>>
>>81270247
>Hitman > Preacher. There, I said it.
Is there anyone who disagrees with that? Preacher had some great moments and Dillon actually made good art but it went on too long and had several meh bits. Hitman was basically perfect and McCrea is miles above Dillon at any point in his career..
>>
>>81269861
>Somebody besides me has heard of Dicks

Well then
>>
He's okay by gritdark standards when he's in Ameriboo mode, but he can really hackish. Dangerous Habits is one of the worst comics I ever read, technically speaking.
John Constantine got an Irish best buddy and an Irish old flame and even started sounding fucking Irish, all out of the blue (green?) after Delano's bretty good run.

I mean, I'm Canadian but if I got hired to write Harley Quinn or something I wouldn't write in a Canadian ex-boyfriend or try to force "Hokey dinah!" as Harley's new catchphrase.

>>

>>
>>81267130
His war comics blow Preacher out of the water. Push yorself ut of your comfort zone and read 'em. Though I'm notsure how you can like his Punisher and Nick Fury runs and not read Battlefields or War Stories, they hit a lot of similar notes. A lot of the better parts of Hitman, Preacher and The Boys are all about war too. Generally if Ennis is dealing with any kind of soldier or military story he's at the top of his game.
>>
>>81270696
Dicks is great if you can stomach Ennis' brand of humor, it's basically him writing an Irish Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg film. At its core it's about the friendship between two blokes and Ennis writes the hell out of those kind of friendships.
>>
>>81270662
Mccrea is good but why he hate on Dillon? guys great
>>
>>81263020
I love it and trash it. He's an individual, with a number of talents and quirks, and some of his work turns out good, while some of it is hot garbage.
>>
>>81263020

Read Punisher MAX, Hitman, Battlefields, War Stories, and Hellblazer. Great stuff.

>>81269861

Say what you like, but I think he wrote one of the best ever Peter Parker's in Tangled Web.
>>
>>81263020
Hitman, the Boys, and Punisher MAX rank as some of my favorite comics of all time. Definitely one of my favorite writers, if not THE favorite.
>>
>>81267356
Only problem I had with Just a Pilgrim and Preacher is the intense fedora tipping. It's just a personal taste thing but it really detracts from the quality in my eyes.
>>
>>81269861
I'm a little miffed the Boys is that low.
>>
Honestly, my problems with Preacher were Dillon's art going full retard, Garth trying to one-up the shock value, and how stupid the whole Angel-God-Devil interactions were.
>>
>>81279715
The Boys is Ennis at his best and worst, way more so than Preacher. When it's good, it's REALLY good, when it's bad, it's fucking terrible.
>>
Did anybody else find it funny how much he wanked off the SAS in Hitman?
>>
>>81279423
Dillon has an absurd sameface problem, especially on his recent works. He also generally can't draw anything dynamic and reuses the same poses and blood effects for every comics. He's done some decent work but most of it is pretty bad.
>>
>>81269861
Hellblazer needs to be moved to the top. Betting this guy is a Delanofag
>>
Hitman was good, did some nice Punisher stuff, he's an edgyfaggot everywhere else. I appreciate that he loves Superman but his autism over Captain America issilly.
>>
>>81280663

It wasn't just the SAS, it was a crack squad of the SAS. They were mercs.
>>
>>81269987
>Ennis has a hateboner for alpha males
I honestly think this is the stupidest comment I've ever heard about Ennis' work
What the fuck are characters like Jesse Custer, Tommy Monaghan and his version of Nick Fury if he purely has a hateboner for alpha males?
>>
>>81280761
I don't think it needs to be top but it should at least be above Preacher, seeing that Preacher is a retread of his Hellblazer run with more Western iconograhy and shock value
>>
>>81280825

Those characters are all miserable.
>>
>>81271385
Minifig I'll never know your obsession with this list, it's so goddamn garbage it's not even funny.
>>
>>81280812
Don't get me wrong, those SAS guys kicking ass left and right was absolutely fine, they're bleeding SAS.
It just seemed like Nat was talking about how "dey da best" every other page. I got it the first time, ya know?
>>
>>81280846
Jesse and Tommy are both decently happy
>>
The way Ennis writes romance is cringeworthy and his portrayals of friendship are borderline homoerotic.
>>
>>81280761
A good quarter of his Hellblazer run is shit though. Between Dangerous Habits and Fear and Loathing is pure garbage, Ennis himself said as much, that he wrote garbage till he quit smoking pot. I'm not sure how Prince Charles being possessed by the same demon that created Jack the Ripper going around eating whores managed to be boring, but Pothead Ennis found a way. And only Dangerous Habits and Rake at The Gates of Hell stack up to the rest of his career highlights. Well those and the Homeland issues with Kit.
>>
>>81280846
Okay, but they're written as Alpha males in the same way that Wolverine is (Lobo's kind of a special case). Way to refute my point. Like or hate Ennis work, the idea that he hates Alpha Males is ludicrous. If you're going to levy criticism at least make sense.

Quite honestly DC could really benefit from a new talent search program similar to the one they did in the 80s that got them Morrison, Ennis, Ellis etc. They need fresh blood. They also should get some of their writers to become editors and gut a bunch of the current editorial staff, writer-editors actually care about the quality of the narratives going on because it effects their stories.

And that's the end of The Firefly and His Majesty. If you like what you read, please support it by buying it because this was a real good book.

I have to say, Götterdammerüng (the war in Germany in 1945) just seems to have a certain extra air of depressiveness. I can't put my finger on it, but every story I've seen set in this phase of the war has just been darker than any other.
