Almost all episodes introduce some aspect of the world they're set in. Stuff like gem regeneration, gems cracking, monsters having gems, old gems being dangerous, steven's relationship with his dad, connie, beach city, fusion, warps, gem history, old outposts, all these things NEED to be established, so when shit actually happens, we know the significance of it and how it relates to things.

Compare it to Neon Genesis Evangelion. That show doesn't do any of that and just dumps you in the third season of a riunning universe,so it just ends up confusing and feels both rushed and overly complicated. It has roughly the same amount of backstory, with ancient space creatures and past war-like events, it's just never properly conveyed.

If you're an anime fan for the sake of serialized stories with a consistent continuity, then Steven Universe is for you.

At first glance SU might seem like the kind of show that would be a series of one-off joke episodes loosely strung together by a vague plotline, like Wander Over Yonder or Adventure Time. A long string of self contained episodes that can be watched in any order broken up by the odd plot-relevant episode. It isn't. While there are a couple of self-contained gag episodes, nearly every episode in SU does something to push the story forward, from event occurring that fill in the viewer with past events or important setting information, to major plot developments, to developing the arch of one of the side characters. The episode always ends with something having changed, and those changes remain consistent and are often called back on in future developments.

Waifus? Meh, don't give a shit about that, but the characterization is very strong in SU, so you're bound to resonate with someone to some degree.

If you do get into the show, then I have one piece of advice: STAY THE FUCK AWAY FROM /sug/! Jesus fucking christ the sheer velocity of shit flinging cancer in those threads is enough to give you whiplash. I picked the show up last year around the time of the Week of Sardonyx, and walking into the general thread at the time was like watching the elevator door open in The Shining. Just a tide of filth flying at me from all directions. Seriously, stay away from it. I know that picking up an interesting show makes one want to discuss it with a community, but SU, despite being its own, very well written program, attracts the very worst of both the MLP and Homestuck fandoms, and all the autism implied.

Sit down and try to make a 'mandatory viewing' list and you'll pretty quickly find the list of droppable episodes is surprisingly skinny.

It's introducing concepts to you without making you aware of it. Then when Water Gem happens and the shit hits the fan, it's got 25 episodes of 'oh shiiiiiiiiiiiit' behind it.

Also the main strength of the show is that it's complex, (sometimes) mature and somewhat fucked up shit as viewed through the eyes of a kid, without any cutaways. He doesn't ask the questions a neckbeard would ask because he doesn't care - that gives it a unique perspective and is part of what makes the show good. We're looking at the world through a keyhole.

That being said, OP and anyone else who's watching - if you get sick of it and want to bail, skip ahead to episode 25 and just watch that. It's much more indicative of where the show goes than the first half of S1.
