At first, this was about Jack Savage, a bunny detective(?) in the South Pacific. They immediately scrapped this. They also scrapped the name Jack because of the recent and upcoming movies regarding Jack and the Beanstalk.

I think of the scrapped concept stuff, my fave is the Bunnyburrow stuff. Seeing them represented as this mass of homogeneous grinning faces really adds weight to why Judy resents being called cute and struggles to stand out.

The pneumatic tubes wouldn't have made as much sense in the current version, though, since they'd have email and wireless communication, making the tubes obsolete.

I'm not really 100% sure why, but I'm really digging the idea that Nick sort of stands as Judy's defender more than anything else.

That like Judy is all about "do the right thing" "Make the world better" and while Nick is really more about just protecting others that he feels deserves it.

Did Nick continue to call Judy "Carrots" up until the end of the film? I thought it was cute as fuck how at the start he used it as an insult to her and by the end it's turned into a cute pet name. Judy can most certainly protect herself, or Nick, I'm just saying that I enjoy the thought that for Nick it's all about protecting others. Mostly from the whole Junior Ranger's stuff. Nick sees someone else being ganged up on in the same way, and his instinct is to step in, like we see him do with Judy against Bogo.
I just get the sense that if Nick was a P.I. character he'd be the kind of guy to accept alternate payments. People paying him in produce and so on. He'd be the guy who would defend the underdog.

What did you dislike most about the film?

I thought the Shakira song was absolute trash. Such a shame that they used it during the train scene. It was so visually impressive, but then I started to focus in on the song and I was trying not to laugh at how terrible it is.

It takes generic concepts (buddy cop, anthropomorphic animal fiction) and utilizes them purposefully. The funny differences between the two leads in buddy cop films often guides the drama in a predictable direction: they aren't going to get along, but then they find out that two heads are better than one and that they have synergy they didn't see before. In this one they see that they work well together but what drives them apart is the main character's "racism." The character we're supposed to like and identify with. This flaw is so hard to handle well in PG territory but the film does it because of the use of anthropomorphic animal fiction.

Rather than having a lead in the right from the start, Judy goes into Zootopia wanting to "make the world a better place" but makes the world worse through sheer ignorance (even after accomplishing her goals), before making it better, then changes her tune to "the best way to make the world a better place is to be a better person." That in itself isn't generic but added to it it's also executed very well.

Even the phrase "anyone can be anything" takes on a more ominous tone when you find out who the real villain is.
