By the time they were separated, Elsa was already 8 and Anna 5. They had formed a very, very strong sibling bond, as the movie makes clear, so strong a sibling bond that even at age 18 Anna gets nearly teary-eyed just reminiscing about how fucking close they were when she was 5. They also weren't truly separated, since Anna spent such a long time thinking about Elsa, her sister, trying to lure her out to play. Seeing how Elsa was outside her room in a couple of shots and also in the book A Frozen Heart indicates that it's not like they didn't see each other in over a decade, they just didn't interact. Elsa on her part acted like the responsible caretaker older sister and kept very strongly acting in that role throughout the movie, so she also sees Anna as the little sister she, the older sibling and head of the family, would have a duty to protect.

All this delusion about "they don't count as siblings because they spent some years slightly estranged" is ludicrous. Family bonds don't just reset like that.

If it wasn't a Disney princess film, maybe. We haven't seen anything of Elsa's sexual preferences since she's mainly been convinced that her touch is lethal and she's a danger, and stressing out about giving Anna the best birthday ever out of guilt for her having had a shit childhood because Elsa was such a freak the parents had to shut the gates.
She hasn't had the time to relax.

However, realistically I think she's too profitable and too high-profile to be Disney's first positively portrayed gay human character ever. The problem is that by the time Frozen II rolls around, it's too late and too risky to suddenly out her as gay after parents have for years believed the princess their preschooler daughter is idolizing and pretending to be is straight.

I'm sure that all the gay positivity recently and even the popularity of elsanna will lead to Disney having a gay character sooner than anticipated. But the first one won't be in a princess in a romantic musical directed at little kids - it might be a side character in a movie like Zootopia, where the themes and jokes are more mature to begin with, and they don't hope to sell glittery dresses to children dressing up as the character in question. It def won't be their most profitable character in recent memory.

It might, possibly, be tolerated or liked more than it's outright hated, but a good sized fraction of the audience would be disappointed that Elsa didn't get her fairytale prince.

The safest option would be to introduce one or several female main or side characters with whom Elsa strikes up a friendship while she continues to reject male suitors or doesn't interact with them at all.

Think about how people kept buzzing about how Merida might be gay because, as a 16 year old whose personality is all about freedom, she didn't want to be in an arranged marriage for life. Elsa refusing male attention will get at least some people believing she's intended to be gay, add in those female friends and you've got more options, while Disney can still rest comfortably on the knowledge that it hasn't explicitly made her gay so they can deny accusations easily.

And it keeps people talking about it, too, while ultimately allowing both pro- and anti- Elsa being gay camps relatively happy because both see their side as having proof or the other side as having none. Neither side is unduly offended and Disney reaps the monetary benefits of Elsa on the big screen again.
