Talking animals notwithstanding, Zootopia is basically a quasi-buddy crime drama.

You think with it success Disney might travel a little more in unknown territory? A real Disney animated scifi movie would be neat.
>>
>>80908182
Wasn't BH6 a Disney sci-fi movie?
>>
>>80908268
Kinda?

It's more grounded in cape comics than anything. I was thinking something more like Flash Gordon or hell maybe even Lovecraft if they can do it right.
>>
Lilo & Stitch
Atlantis: The Lost Empire
>>
>>80908362
Lilo and Stitch was more a family drama slice of life with a scifi backdrop

Atlantis was more adventure fantasy also it was a clusterfuck
>>
>>80908362
Calling Lilo and Stitch scifi is stretching it. Just because it had aliens didn't make it scifi, it was about a lonely weird Hawaiian girl. Meet the Robinsons was more scifi than Stitch. Also you forgot Treasure Planet.

Zootopia already was sci fi you just didn't notice.

>a fantastic high technology world
>using aliens (or in this case anthropomorphic animals) as a metaphor to comment on the human condition in our world
>very seriously answered the question of how a world like this would work and it's social consequences

It was basically cute animal star trek m8
>>
>>80908539
Treasure Planet feels like a cheat for it literally just being Treasure Island in space
>>
>>80908714
Yeah, but considering all the tech and stuff I think it fits.
>>
>>80908353
>Lovecraft
Do you even know what his stories were like? Not exactly Disney material.
>>
>>80908353
If Watchmen can't have Lovecraft then disney can't.
>>
>>80908617
This. Rather than leaving the details and implications of an animal modern society alone, the movie dwelled on it in proper sci-fi, if/then tradition.
>>
>>80908976
Mang, they did Hunchback, Tarzan, and the fucking Protestant invasion of North America.

Besides, I didn't mean to actually adapt one of his stories, more like make a story somewhat inspired by one.
>>
>>80909408
Bloodborne and The Thing are examples of stories inspired by Lovecraft. Disney makes family entertainment.
>>
>>80908182
There was supposed to be a "teen space race" movie coming out in a couple years. Moana and and Gigantic got moved up before it though, so I doubt it's still set for 2018.

Disney and scifi haven't gotten along all that well.
>>
>>80909560
So do SU and MLP.

It doesn't have to be a straight Lovecraft story but something close enough to see the inspirations. If not Lovecraft, how about HG Wells?

I just want my scifi horror Disney movie no matter unlikely it is.
>>
>>80909560
>I have not read lovecraft: the post
The real lovecraftian themes are human impurity+weakness, plus tainted bloodlines. Dude was weird about racemixing.
>>
>>80908362
>Lilo & Stitch

Lilo and Stitch was like five minutes of really cool science fiction, after which the main character crashes into a Disney movie and learns an important lesson about family.
>>
Atlantis and Treasure Island bombed... so good luck

I think Zootopia is further on in time than our current day. Firstly, the age of their cvilization is close of our own, given how are heavily anthromorphized they are in the history museum concept art and given Judy's saying they were still eating each other "thousands" of years ago (compared to our ~5,000 yrs).

Secondly, though their technology is similar to ours now (e.g Zoogle.com), its implemention is not. Judy lives in a rural Farmville yet she is able to hopon over to her local train station and grab a damn maglev train while we still end up boarding a locomotive. Another important note, Zootopia is the most important urban settlement in this world, hell it's the only city we ever hear about (think of all the puns they could have made!). Zootopia is cornerstone city, something we really don't have now (Washington), but did in the past (Rome) and likely will have again in the distant future when a global government is established.

Picture unrelated, drew it tonight to use as a reaction.png but never got the right post to use it for

One thing that I wonder about the economy of Zootopia is that big animals are bound to require way more resources than small ones. From food, to living space, to pretty much everything else.
How do they pay for that? Do they earn more than small animals? That works for manual labor, but what about office jobs? Why would you pay your elephant secretary more than your gerbil secretary?
>>
>>80908817
Nope. It wad more of a space opera or space fantasy than sci-fi.
>>
>>80920118
I think it's balanced out by the fact that smaller animals tend to produce more offspring. Judy has three hundred siblings. Assuming the Hopps make about enough money to consistently feed a single elephant, that'd just about cover it.

Hell, I'd love it if they went and made a full on Flash Gordon tv series Or maybe something along the lines of Captain Proton more precisely. I'm just saying it ain't Sci-Fi, and it would probably not be the best idea for Disney to make actual Sci-Fi.
Although I could see maybe a decent I, Robot type series that is about say engineers who keep having to deal with random malfunctions and figuring out why they happened.

You've got a good point, but I feel the theme and how close to home the story and setting are, it's more fitting in the fantasy category. I mean it's debatable, but to me Fantasy was always putting this world and its problems into a different mould, without exploring the scientific mechanics of the new setting, or the long time reciprocations of things.

If I'd have to pick a "cute animal Star Trek" movie, I'd probably pick Happy Feet.
After all, you could easily call Game of Thrones or the book version of Lord of the Rings science fiction in this sense, on account of them painting the mechanics of a fictional society, and how it behaves to certain stimuli.

I only say star trek because watching zootopia reminded me of the TOS episode with the half black, half white guys, where we can't tell the difference but they've been locked in a race war for centuries.

And yeah it's not necessarily sci fi, It just functions quite effectively as one.

Ehhh I wouldn't be so sure about that.
Take something as innocent as the Hobbit.
There is a great city of historical import, that a heroic, Arthurian even group of adventurers seek out, to reclaim, and an object of great import, which is an icon to their people, arguably the most important artefact they have ever known.
In reclaiming it all however, they are just reminded that what lies there is not their own birthright alone, and there are others who seek a share aswell.
And then, too proud to compromise, to put away their differences, these three factions who each lay claim to parts of this expedition wage war, only to realize the conflict will only lead to their own destruction.

I see Jerusalem painted all over that.
Seriously, between the periless journey to reclaim the ancient home of their people, the Arkenstone/Holy Grail depicted in the book as a sign of the Dwarves' birthright, which is more important to their identity than any other item? It seems pretty clear cut.

Then again, it depends on where you draw the line between examining.

I'd love to see some Dark Souls x Zootopia art, just for funsies. Hell, somebody already drew some crossover art with Bloodborne, which is the spiritual successor to Dark Souls, as seen in pic related.

They have to stick with one or the other for the nomination. Otherwise, it would split potential votes. Same reason why they only FYC LEt it Go in 2014/2013.

That's why I'm pulling for Moana in the animated, and Zootopia to get a nomination for Best Picture. It won't win, but a nomination would be gold. Disney wins either eay.

BogoBen looks like the second most popular because of how little we see the other characters interacting with each other. We don't have too many logical options. I'm actually one now-where-did-I-put-that? passport away from seriously considering taking some savings and having a Japan vacation next month. Not just for movie, of course, they've got tourist sights, authentic cuisine, arcades that aren't dead yet, plenty of souvenirs, and it comes out before Golden Week so travel won't be as inconvenient as it would be later.

It's a cover crop that's more close to a repellent than an insecticide. A real world example would be mustard varieties.

I don't know if she knew or remembered how dangerous they were at the time. The animals who we see tripping balls on nighthowler are his by a super concentrated extract that's probably the equivalent of eating multiple nighthowlers. The potency of a single one could make someone flip out momentarily, which should be enough to make it a controlled substance.

World was previously a predator (white) dominated society. Eventually both predator and prey animals (non-whites) began to live together in somewhat segregated cities, offering equality but asking positions be filled by those most suitable.

News of violence toward citizens by violent predators is pushed by the media, affecting those in positions of power and law enforcement. All a secret conspiracy built on lies, masterminded by Prey Lives Matter activist sheep (complete with problem glasses), perpetuated by mindless SJWs.

Almost 600 million, just around 2 and a 0.5 weeks that is around 500 million in the large market countries (the "small" market countries where the movie was released already in February managed to get around 100 million up until the movie was released in the large markets US/Russia/Germany/China etc.)

Japan yet to come.

So we are already kind of in the clear for 700-800 million which would mean it would be the 2nd most successful movie after Frozen from WDAS.

Nice bit of slam poetry.
He's a flawed character for sure, but somehow his flaws are endearing in that cute way that makes people go for "dumb blondes" only in his case he's working somewhere that would be too much for the stereotypical dumb blonde, which shows that he has a lot of emotional fortitude and maturity. He has the right attitude for the job and his job is actually many jobs at once. He works by himself as a receptionist and dispatch. Everyday he sees the worst of people and even good people at their lowest but he remains a fun and caring person.

Sunday Update: Disney's Zootopia took in an estimated $38.04 million this weekend to lead the weekend box office for a third consecutive frame. The blockbuster 3D computer animated film from Walt Disney Animation Studios held up especially well, as it was only down 26 percent from last weekend's already strong hold. Without adjusting for ticket price inflation, Zootopia registered the eighth largest third weekend gross of all-time and the largest third weekend gross ever for an animated film (the previous third weekend high-mark for an animated film being the $37.93 million take of 2004's Shrek 2).
>
>Zootopia passed the $200 million mark this weekend and has grossed a terrific $201.81 million in 17 days. The film is currently running 49 percent ahead of the $135.75 million 17-day take of 2014's Big Hero 6 and is already approaching the $222.53 million final domestic gross of that film. Thanks to its exceptional holding power thus far, Zootopia is now running just 18 percent behind the $245.89 million 17-day take of last year's Inside Out. Given its strong word of mouth, the approaching Easter holiday and the relative lack of competition for family audiences it will face throughout the rest of March and early April, Zootopia should continue to hold up very well going forward.

I'm pretty sure LotR was about Catholicism and forgiveness. It does comment on our world, but certainly not in the way that's common for science fiction. And comparing Fantasy as a genre and Star Trek as an example of science fiction is a bit of an unfair fight, given that Star Trek can without exageration be said to be some of the best television and science fiction ever.

In the end, there are no real rules, and loads of people simply say "magic = fantasy, technology = science fiction". Even Margaret Atwood abhorred the idea that she was writing science fiction, despite it clearly being science fiction, because most people figure science fiction to be "space ships and talking squid".

Neither genre needs to do any social commentary to be considered part of the genre. So if we pare it down, we can say science fiction is all fiction where scientific progress changes the setting from our world in a way that informs the plot. On the other hand, fantasy is all fiction that draws inspiration from mythology, legend, and history, and where this inspiration directly informs the plot. Both are speculative fiction because their central themes revolve around speculation from a certain known point.

This also shines an interesting light on that redheaded stepchild, steampunk. Because steampunk does BOTH. It takes the concept of science fiction (scientific progress) and places it in a world informed by myth, legend, and history (some of which used to be the science fiction of the 19th century).

So, to answer the central question: Zootopia is firmly in the realm of science fiction. Not in the least because its name and central theme unvoke one of the old mainstays of science fiction; the utopia. Utopia itself being, basically, science fiction from 1516.

The elephant was. Gender is likely less important than species when it comes to jobs in Zootopia. A female lion is going to be a lot larger and stronger than say, a male skunk.

Judy would've been similarly underestimated if she had been male.

Yeah, they did a follow up on some questions they answered during the Facebook Q&A:
After a long debate, Howard and Bush decided that Bellwether was right, but disagree on why she's right and just how right she is.
Of the six gay characters in Zootopia, they came forward and dropped the subtlest hints that one of those six just might be Clawhauser.
They said that if they couldn't get the point and click video game, they're going to try to make it a an interactive social media experience on the occulous rift.
They don't even dignify questions of Nick and Judy dating because it's just too ridiculous.

>I'm pretty sure LotR was about Catholicism and forgiveness. It does comment on our world, but certainly not in the way that's common for science fiction.
Yeah, that's what I meant with the original comment.
I wouldn't call Zootopia directly science fiction, because itself felt like the way it displays its themes are very much independent of the theme. Minimal change would be neccessary to move the story from Zootopia to the real world, and practically nothing would be lost, beyond the emotional distance.
Meanwhile, in Utopia which you use as an example, the entire purpose of the title, is that it's impossible to find that kind of place in the real world. No place is like Utopia, while Zootopia's quiet mistrust, unspoken prejudices and other themes are directly drawn from the real world.

>>80925031
>Tolkien would slap you of he could. In every interview he'd done during his life he always expressed his dislike for allegory, stating that he built the world of Middle Earth for the sake of creating his own world and history.
Tolkien also expressed that he was disappointed how few if any at all seemed to recognize his work as a christian work, and indeed christians criticised it for being un-christian, while he explicitly tried to make this world a mythology as much rooted in ideals as the historic mythologies it's based off of.

There's a fine line between allegory, and having some cenrtral ideals in your story, a fine line he would understand more than most given his position.

Refusing the idea that there are deeper meanings in his work to the point a lot of people do just because he was quoted multiple times to dislike allegory, is effectively claiming that his work had no meaning at all, which is a massive disservice to it.

Bellwether says she framed Lionheart. By framed she obviously means that she set him up, but it implies that maybe she did it in such a way that she helped him since the very first missing mammal. She needed for the mayor to collect a zoo of savage predators so he'll fall even harder.

Him having a private army and lab is strange enough. It's like he's more of a president than a mayor.

It's funny-- Byron Howard mentioned how in the wild, foxes are solitary creatures, however when raised in captivity like at the fox village they prefer to sleep in big fluffy piles like dogs and wolves. I imagine that the fox village's foxes are much more domesticated than wild foxes though, like the ones that they sell as pets in Russia.

What? didn't Nick have to go through academy shit to become her partner or was that literally just from one day to the next? I didn't think the Gazelle concert happened 1 day after they captured bellweather.

Or maybe it did? hmm

No where. Someone mentioned these "facts" without any source and they started circulating.
So nothing about 6 gay characters, nothing about a point and click game, and nothing squashing NickxJudy, especially since during the interview they specifically said they werent gonna come down on a side yet

Well i suppose they could have started dating while he was in the academy, but then they wouldnt be partners if they were open about the relationship
Unless the Zpd doesnt follow real life fraternization rules

How well do you think it would of done if they kept the original?
Would be controversial as fuck pretty much being 1984 with furries

ZPD is fictional so for the sake of cute shit I doubt it matters. I mean their main receptionist chugs doughnuts all day and talks to arrested men about pop stars being fabulous. Can safely assume they aren't going for 100% realistic potrayal of an actual police academy. That and I think someone said earlier you can actually date as IRL cops as long as you're the same rank or some shit
>>
>>80927080
What? How are you getting such good quality?

Would have been more interesting maybe but certainly wouldn't have been a success. Now that this is successful we can at least count on more stuff in the future.

It was heavily implied at the end.

You don't say "I love you" to a girl/guy in that context without it having a tiny hint of romanticism. I don't know why people are arguing it was "Obviously" a platonic, playful thing to say. Obviously you can say "I love you man" to a friend but when they're a different gender it does change how it ends up getting perceived.
>>
>>80927292
Well it was "you know you love me" which is slightly different. I feel it can honestly be taken either way. Tho i prefer romantic
>>
>>80927292
Imo would of been better as

I see what you did there considering who was originally planned to be nicks VA
>>
>>80927362

Yeah I know that it's "You know you love me," but come on guys, these two have like the best on-screen chemistry of any two characters I've ever seen in a movie. The patting, the hugging, the hand-holding during that gondola ride. It's all flirtatious as fuck, and the implication of Judy saying "Do I know that? Yes, I do," it's all pretty straightforward from my perspective.

I'd never feel comfortable doing those sorts of things with my girl friends (Hugging fine, but holding hands and patting or something?).
>>
>>80927507

There wasn't any hand holding

>>
>>80927502
Who? Harrison ford?
>>
>>80927507
As much as i like them together i think you are reading into it just a bit much. She wasnt flirting with him on the gondola, she was comforting him for opening up to her. And he even pulled away from that
>>
>>80927530

You're right, not outright hand-holding, but Judy placing her hand over Nick's during the gondola ride.

>>80927694
They could probably pull off late 30s or 40s,
Though that would bring a quick to any shipping as he would be twice Judy's age
>>
>>80927733
According to the old concept Judy might have been older in the scrapped earlier version of the story, she looks marginally older on some of the concept art more like 30-35's.

>>80927580
Same, but chances are the multiple lions, wolves, tigers, and polar bears will still be the "extras" considering that's what they'd be hurting for in a TV series without the big movie budget. I'd love to see the interactions between more than just the four that we know. Does Nick often pull tricks on the gullible Clawhauser who doesn't even seem to mind being hustled? Are Judy and McHorn rivals? Is Higgins the teacher's pet type who is always sucking up to Bogo?

So, in canon would Nick's dad have been a tailor who lost his shop when the neighborhood went down, or would he have been the proprietor of the Wild Times amusement center, which had to shut down after years of diminishing returns?

That's actually pretty cool and makes sense in context. Their world deals with an enormous level of physical diversity between species. Such comparatively small differences in sexual dimorphism would be seen as nothing to get hooked up upon.
