What's the worst thing you can say about Zootopia?

For me, it was how mediocre "Try Everything" was and how there was no alternate song. Gazelle seemed like a one hit wonder in her world.

Ending was too rushed, Bellwether calling in ZPD as soon as she shot Nick was dumb, and was only to end the movie.

Bellwether was underdeveloped as a villain

Nick was underdeveloped as a protagonist

The Nighthowler plot was weird and kinda flimsy in how it all tied together

Finnick didn't get enough play in the story

Gazelle was shoehorned into everything and was more of a set piece than a character

The ice/tundra neighborhood was right next to the desert neighborhood. Basic laws of thermodynamics means that those really shouldn't be next to each other because they'd give huge wastage trying to compensate for the desert heat transfering to the ice neighborhood. Zootopia didn't exactly do anything outstandingly new or original, in terms of all of the tropes and cliches. It just did them well.

I think it may be benefiting from the FIM Effect in that the commercials make it seem like "LOL WACKY CRAZY ANIMAL WORLD!!" but the actual movie is so much better than that, so it seems really good in comparison to your expectations.

This. I gave that show you mentioned a shot because of the creator behind it. I love her works and I'll give anything she does a genuine, honest, chance. Glad I did because it's cute and, for what it is, well done in my opinion.

I thought Zootopia might be cute and have a few enjoyable moments, but I was wrong. It was cute and enjoyable the entire time. The story was more mature than I expected which it didn't have to be yet feel it benefited a lot for it.

I don't think it'll be forgotten or brushed aside so easy. In of itself it's just a great movie with some really good story elements. People loved the shit out of Frozen and while I liked it I did most certainly hate things like the trolls and the snowman. Zootopia had none of that shit. Not a single thing in the film felt like it didn't belong.

You weep for Clawhauser and you curse the mayor. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know, that Clawhauser's death, while tragic, probably saved lives. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives! You don't want the truth, because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that wall. You need me on that wall. We use words like "honor", "code", "loyalty". We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to prey that rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it! I would rather you just said "thank you", and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you pick up your badge, and work a hustle. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to!

It's features a style of cartoon that is barely tolerated on /co/, especially with how fan artists use it, is a disney movie, and already has several calls for fanfictions from the threads. "Anyone can be anything" means people besides you. It's nice to see it as an uplifting message but it's not necessarily personal, and if you're like Judy who thinks that she gets to break social barriers but predators can't then you're being an unfair hypocrite.

I remember how bummed /co/ was when we found out that focus was taken from Nick to Judy in the rewrites. I'm still of that sentiment. With what had since been revealed about the older drafts, the Zootopia we got was pretty cheap and vanilla.

The older one seemed to have more of a realistic approach to social issues regarding anthropomorphic animals living together. Predators would have shock collars and there was more focus on the divided environments. It would've been neat to see a struggle of the animals *obtain* a peaceful status quo rather than *maintain*.

The Zootopia we actually got felt more like a sequel. The remnants of that initial draft was only in the third act with Nick and Judy's conflict after the press conference, so no wonder it felt like a cheap tack-on.

But we still got something OK, I guess.

I cringed when Gazelle showed up as a good-guy activist and even made a whole speech about it that helped Judy realize shit

In the theater i went like "thank God Shakira's here to save the day!"
I didn't mind the song, but it was weird to me to give any sort of further relevance to the glorified celebrity cameo

Other than that i think shit went too fast after the revelation of the villain, but that one is understandable considering the movie's pretty long for an animated Disney feature

/frz/ was the Frozen General.
At the start they discussed the movie, talking about things that happened in it, compared it to the older ideas of the movie, discusssed the character development and so on.

Then about two months after it came out it was all about lesbians and r9k posters wishing a character that had five minutes of screen time was real. And then it continued on four six more months.

I'd say the opposite of pretty much all of that. Shock collars wouldn't really be realistic because that's not even close to how prejudice is today.

Prejudice is really undertone and subtle today, and very few people are blunt about it.

It's not about them being animals that makes them prejudice, it's mainly about how they used to be.

It's hardly edgy to look for reasons that predators would be able to tamp down their predatory instincts. No, but in a universe where they show us that animals used to be just like they are in the real world, it helps to understand how they got from animal-like to sapient.

If they'd gotten rid of that school play at the beginning and just established that there are prejudices that exist concerning predator and prey relations then you wouldn't need an explanation.

But prejudice amongst various subspecies is not the same as prejudice amongst predators and prey.

Movies like The Fox and the Hound and The Land Before Time understood this. If you're going to make a movie about natural life struggles involving cartoon animals, you should at least put the associated characters on the same levels of the food chain.

And movies like Robin Hood, Kung Fu Panda, Jungle Book, and The Lion King got away with it because their focuses were on other subjects. However, in Zootopia's case, when your message of social acceptance is made through a natural circle of life that the world strives on, then your message falls flat.

Because if you're not good as visualizing things in 3D then you're going to have a hard time getting his snout right. Judy's face doesn't protrude as much so you can mess it up more and it'll usually still look okay. Construction is hard.

As >>80813253 said it would have a very devoted fandom but it would be a financial dud for Disney. The unfortunate fact of the matter with animation is that you have to sometimes make compromises in order to get the movie made, because animation is expensive and needs to have very broad appeal.

That's not even the case with Zootopia, though. Byron Howard has worked on several CG films and the goal with Zootopia was always to have it be 3D. The initial outset of the project was that Howard wanted to make a new Disney movie in the vein of other animal-heavy films like The Jungle Book, Robin Hood and The Lion King but with modern animation technology. It's not like he and the team pitched Zootopia as a 2D film and then Disney made them switch it over to 3D.

If 2D Zootopia is really what you want to see though, look on the bright side: the movie is making so much money that it's pretty much guaranteed to get a TV show, and odds are that the TV show will be 2D. Seeing as Duck Tales is getting a reboot, we might actually see a return to form of the classic 80s-90s golden era of Disney TV cartoons. Zootopia could easily fit into that category since the characters already translate perfectly into 2D and most of the major design work is already taken care of.

They showed the test footage and explained the plot they had originally to some pixar people, and the consensus was that Nick's cynical outlook and the dark tone of everything made idea of 'obtaining peace' unrealistic. They would rather have had Nick escape the city because the movie made it out to be beyond saving. Personally, I think they were right, and the changes they made worked to make a much better film.
Plus, the thing with the shock collars wasn't well thought out though, at least from what I've seen. Does every predator everywhere have to wear collars, or is it just in Zootopia? If it's everywhere, how on earth could Nick and Judy go about changing the entire world's view. If it's only in Zootopia, then why would predator's eve live there? Also, does that mean predator's just go savage at certain times every where else in the world? What kind of massage does that send, that you can't ignore what you are and that you have no control over it? If they aren't and savagery is just a myth, then wouldn't the fact that there are no incidents of savagery be proof enough that shock collars are unnecessary?
The bleak, cynical film wouldn't work to have the kind of ending they wanted, and would have made for an unsatisfying film and might even have ruined the chemistry between Nick and Judy, which is arguably the best thing about the final version.
I think the movie we got is more satisfying in its conclusion, more air tight in its setting, and overall more enjoyable.

My biggest gripe in the movie was the old tale of young person leaves the farm to go to the big city.

That hasn't been relevant since the early 20th century. Most people are born and raised now in an urban or suburban environment(at least in first world nations).

That and I get tired of the farmers are stupid hicks trope. There are plenty that are, but most of them are actually very in touch when it comes to economics and what's going on in the world because it directly effects their business. They're not sheltered shut ins.

But that just goes back to the old trope I mentioned before.

Other than that really loved the movie.
>>
>>80814867
>"We used to be enemies, and now we're not!"
I think you don't know what "raising the question" means. The movie tells you what happened and how they are now. You are given all the important information for the movie right there. The question would be raised by the movie if someone in the movie ever asked how it happened, which no one does. It would only be a loose end if knowing how they stopped being enemies was important to the plot, which it isn't.

the backstory isn't "sacrificed" for children, it is simply not important in any way. Adults have this terrible idea that everything has to be a realistic representation of things when is doesn't.

The movie is about how social creatures must deal with prejudices that stem from biological differences in order to maintain a society. Plop people right down into that without any "it used to be like our world but now it's not" and you can accept its differences and not compare it to our world and see the gap between our animals and their animals as an issue.

No, it's not a movie-breaking issue. Yes, it's annoying and it sullies some of the immersion because of it and since it's unnecessary it should not have been that way.

Honestly the worst thing I can say about the movie is how inorganic the moral lessons can be. It's like there will be 10-15 minutes of really funny gags or jokes, and then 5 minutes of someone being racist, and then 10 minutes of character development.

It's a small gripe though, maybe 10% of the movie was dedicated to prejudice.

Couldn't agree more, as cool as the gritty noir-esq plot and setting of the early drafts would've been, we undoubtedly got the better film. Nick and judy's chemistry is some of the most natural writing I've seen in years, other studios should take note.
>>
>>80815053
The how became important because they introduced the history of prey and predators as being animal-like until they suddenly stopped.

Get rid of that and just have a scene where they talk about Zootopia as a technological and social marvel. Judy's impressed and happy and we get introduced to a world where predators and prey have issues interacting but nothing about their history because it's not brought up.

Why is the how important?
It is never referenced. It is never brought up. It plays no role in the story.
Only the information that, in this world animals were once just animals, and now they are not, is important.

It is unfortunately a bit of an oversimplifications of things-- in real life, intersectional tensions are more often than not the result of very complex ongoing issues, and there's almost never a single rabble rouser who the responsibility can be pinned on. It can be presumed that predator-on-prey violence was already a thing in the city since predators are generally stronger and faster than prey, however the movie never really drove it as a point that it was a serious problem. In general the city seems pretty clean and financially successful, and hasn't been shown to have fallen victim to urban decay in any significant way.

Bellwether's reasons for hating prey seemed to be personal because of the way predators like Mayor Lionheart treats her, always pushing her around. She wanted to make everyone hate predators as much as she does, so she created a conspiracy and committed what is essentially bio terrorism against the city. We can infer that she created the conflict rather than simply capitalizing on one that was already in progress, which for a kids' movie is fine although it's an oversimplification of where these things really start.

How was it inorganic? Judy was slipping up and letting her prejudice show before she fucked up big time. And the beginning shows us that her encounter with Gideon helped her reach that point. When Nick confronts her and she initially doesn't see anything wrong with what she said or how she said it, that felt like a very real moment. The moral was ambiguous even then as Judy's speech at the end wasn't simple, "hey kids, racism is not cool."

Yeah no. Good press conference etiquette is answering those questions you can and responding to ones that call for taking sides by saying that it is not in your position to comment. As a police officer, and a run of the mill one, not an investigator, Judy can only emphasize that the force is doing what they can, that panic is bad, and that anything else is not something she has any right to go talking about while wearing a uniform and representing the force.

That conference was an utter disaster.

That's what happens when you work on a movie for a year and then do a 180 and start again.

Really though, of all the art books one could get for an animated movie, I'd think that this is going to be one of the most sought after considering the beautiful cut content that tells an alternate story.

Is that really Judy's fault though? If someone tells you something stupid, and you act on it, don't you share the majority of the blame for both being ignorant and acting on ignorance? Judy said something inane, but the citizens were the ones that decided to give into their fear and act on it. Shouldn't their prejudice born from fear and ignorance be condemned? Because Judy won't the first and last source of biased or false information.

Kabuki was different, though. Yes, he was the supposed good guy hiding behind a (literal) mask, but his reasoning is understandable and he's warring more with the man he deems responsible for his daughter's death rather than the heroes. They're just the ones who oppose him. And he didn't want power, just revenge.

His parents were less sympathetic than they seem, basically disowning him because he's a freak sickly albino.
His only friends were the wolf servants, and he was the only one in the family that was actually nice to them, so when Shen was exiled, the wolves defected to his side.

Is that the "Mayor Lionheart is gonna be just JAZZED!" scene? Still gotta see this movie...
>>
The press conference scene worked out well. I can see where you would argue Nick is overreacting to Judy precisely because while she's talking, he's noticing the reactions of the press and realizing she's in over her head. Judy has no clue what she got herself into by just being generally ignorant(which isn't the same as maliciously ignorant).

So yeah, Nick does overreact...but that's the point. Nick didn't didn't properly give Judy the benefit of a doubt with what she was saying and Judy was insensitive to Nick's background when she was talking "in general" to the press.

In other words, a very common instance of miscommunication.

>>
>>80815687
It depends. It's possible that Mayor Lionheart was the last straw for her, but it's also possible that she had been conspiring against predators for many years and saw being Lionheart's assistant mayor as the perfect opportunity to further her plan. We really don't know why Bellwether hates predators, because that was the big plot twistand thus they don't have time to go deep into it. We can only really speculate that she was tired of getting stepped on by predators like Lionheart her whole life and blew her lid, or that she simply has an innate lust for power and could care less whether or not the predators actually deserve to be turned into second-class citizens.

In the movie, his backstory really wasn't explained very much, just that he started experimenting with the "dark powers" of fireworks and such.

The writers explained that originally, Shen's parents hated him and thought of him as weak and sickly, because he was albino. It was also said that the parents didn't treat the wolves very well, while Shen did, so that's why they're allied with him.

But yeah, they cut most of that out, because they didn't want the audience sympathizing with a genocidal maniac.
>>

I don't understand. Why are you in a thread about a movie if you haven't watched the movie?
>>

>>
>>

The only issue I have with this is that I don't see the wolves as being Shen's comrades at all, just his servants. It would work better if they simply thought that the wolves were just as useless and full of freaks as their son was, so Shen allied with them not out of compassion but as more of a fuck you to his parents by turning those freaks into a powerful army.
>>
>>80815611
I thought the story was strung together nicely. It doesn't feel like a single character was wasted because the story used them all so nicely. Judy's character arc is one of the most original in animation as a whole. The movie is bookended in a very cool way.

Sure. But she isn't experienced with press conferences, that point was made just before when Nick was coaching her about it. She was nervous, rushed, and inexperienced, which resulted in her messing it all up. But even then, she didn't even take sides, just recite what's been relevant to the case.

It hurt Nick especially coming from Judy. He opened up to her and then she kind of stepped on his feelings by being so insensitive. He was angry about the implications of what she said about predators to the public, sure, but he was probably even moreso angry that it was said by someone who he personally admired and thought was above that. After the heart-to-heart they had on the cable car, it sounded as if Judy had learned absolutely nothing from her time with him.
>>

Yes, she's inexperienced, which is why she took sides by talking shit about predators. Actually I thought similar. Judy just repeated what they both, she and Nick, eavesdropped from the scientist, that it might have the cause in the predators DNA.
I don't remember well, she might have said that more convincingly, but I'd blame her stress in front of cameras (her first press conference). She might have hastily jumped to conclusions (I don't remember well, I still think she was telling they don't know for sure), but it was in the heat of the interview.

I wonder when the soothsayer made her prediction. Did she wait until Shen had shown signs of cruelty, or was it something that hovered over his head from birth? Surely even a cursory understanding of those people cruel and powerful enough to be tyrants like Shen would suggest an immediate and harsh response to such a prophecy, which would therefore endanger the people involved.

>Not to mention the images of all the predators being cuffed and muzzled, I'm sure that didn't help things, thinking that if he did go savage, Judy would muzzle him as well.

They both had traumatic childhood flashbacks during that scene, but especially Nick. Judy went for the fox spray because for a moment Nick reminded her of Gideon the day that he scratched her face, although arguably Nick's ordeal with the scouts was a lot more tragic because no-one was there to pick him up and make him feel better afterwards, like what Judy had with her friends.

Nick didn't have any friends and that's why he wanted to join the scouts in the first place, and he might not have even told his own mother what they did to him because he didn't want her to be disappointed. Seeing all those other predators having muzzles slapped on them was too much for him, and the look he gave Judy was too much for her.

Some of it is design. Creators will have ideas of what they want but they don't know how to put it on paper. By working with designers, they can look at several concepts to piece together what they're looking for and what they're not looking for and hopefully come up with something better than first imagines or at least something that worked.

How hard could it be to be a doctor in animal world? it takes a lifetime to understand human biology, imagine having to learn different types of physiologies for every species just in a city like zootopia.

granted different doctors probably specialize on a certain number of animals, this would also be another form of discrimination as there are less doctors interested in learning the biology of a minority of species... interesting

It wasn't a tense moment, it was an emotionally intimate moment. Whether Judy was going to hug him or kiss him, Nick either wasn't ready for it or he was worried that Judy was moving too fast due to all the excitement moments earlier, and was worried they'd both end up feeling embarrassed if he let her go through with it.
>>
>>80819828
Because motion blur exists. Also, you'd need the render farms to run for twice as long and no one wants to pay for that.
>>
>>80819903
>Theres no real reason not to either.

You think it matters what you want when it comes to costs? 60fps isn't needed for the project, so there's no reason to do it. Maybe when you're shelling out millions of dollars to make your movie you can make them render it out to sixty frames.

You could say that about many things in movies honestly.
And I somehow don't think it costs millions just to double the fps of the movie. It costs extra, sure, but its not like a crippling cost. If the director really wanted 60 fps, they could probably get it if it wasn't like one of their first projects ever.
>>
>>80820079
So you don't know anything about making a 3D movie then.

I don't think she would have fucked him but she would have done something that could either potentially be interpreted as romantic. or something that was outright romantic. >>80820160
I've seen the movie multiple times. Judy was definitely transitioning towards doing something that made Nick uncomfortable. The space between them was closing and she was practically whispering to him when Nick finally broke things off with a joke.
>>
>>80819828
Because anything that's not a video game looks like fucking shit when run at 60fps. Also, too many frames for the eye to process per second = a literal headache for some people.
>>
How would their relationship work in the interim between the first movie and eventual romance of the second?

My headcanon is

Naw, Nick was right on the edge of getting bunny pussy. He was taken by surprise which is why he put a stop to it, they also didn't have the time to spare.
>>
>>80819996
These days, movies do not take anywhere near "years" to render.

Especially for the insanely-wealthy Disney. They can easily afford tons of really fucking powerful computers for render farms.
>>
>>80820245
Though I agree Nick did intentionally end the moment, Judy was just trying to comfort him after he opened up to her. I ship them hard, but in that scene there was nothing really romantic about what she was trying to do.
