I only ask because it really seems to mess up the character dynamic of the two. Blue uniform vs a green con-man outfit. Street smarts vs authority, it just worked better how it was at first. It might have made a satisfying ending but isn't very good for sequel material.

I can see that backfiring spectacularly. Nick and Judy simply strike me as at their best working together. Whether romantic or platonic, the bond they've formed means they're well synchronized and their best best ideas come from ping-ponging ideas like a two-mammal Geth hivemind.

Pair them with someone else and while they'll still be effective, it's not going to be a "wrap up a case that took weeks for other cops in the span of 48 hours" of when they're together, and chances are, whoever else they get partnered with is going to end up lagging behind a lot.

I've seen this film 5 times now and my joy from it hasn't diminished in the slightest. If anything, I love noticing the things I didn't from the first couple of times. Seeing Judy's nose twitch sends my heart a flutter. My question for the sequel is, do you think there should be some sort of time skip? After, let's say a year, the two have distanced themselves from one another. The gap can be later explained via television series. I don't know, I think it'd be weird to start it off from where the first movie ended.

You know that the movie is over, right? It ended and there were credits. If you're going to criticize him for liking that ending, you'll also be criticizing the movie's ending in the same light. Kind of an unpopular opinion here, but I agree that that wasn't the best scene.
Done a thousand times before, and while this was one of the better cases of godfather parodies, it's still a godfather parody.
Even worse that that was the scene they really pushed in the commercials to try and sell it. It's a ridiculously unoriginal joke in an otherwise fresh and original movie.

The ending left it pretty open for any further productions. There's also so much concept art and other material that wasn't ever used that the development team could go off of. And executives love to greenlight sequels because it's a safer investment vehicle (Shrek sequels are some of the highest earning animated films ever).

I feel like the first film ended with a sort of conclusion to both characters development. Over time, new conflicts emerge. Since they're the only friend the other has, that means that they share everything, which can sometimes be difficult. I'm not saying it should be a significant amount of time, just some breathing space between it and the first.
