Watterson would often put a one or two panel joke at the top because many newspapers would just cut off those panels anyway. You'll notice that a lot of his longer/weekend comics will do this.

It's newspaper strip anatomy, they're meant to be set up that way. The idea is that the newspaper can edit out some of the panels if they need to reformat the strip.
Watterson fought against that and wanted artistic freedom. He got it, and that's why the later Sunday strips have wilder panel layouts.

Yeah, I know Watterson hated that restrictive layout.

This particular page was heavily let down by the format, in his eyes. According to him, it didn't live up to its potential. He particularly disliked the massive and blank first panel, which was a waste of space in his eyes. Though I see his point, I still think it's great, but you know how artists are.

It's not really a paradox though. It makes complete sense, although it is a little puzzling when you initially encounter the concept of angular velocity. Every point on the disk has the same angular velocity, but the further a point is from the center, the higher its linear velocity.

Newtonian mechanics aren't like quantum mechanics. They're overall pretty intuitive, famm.

Also, even though it's a parody, it should be downright illegal to post Dobson imagery in a Calvin & Hobbes thread.

What I think I really like about this Sunday page is that it uses a format that's different from what Watterson disliked about the old Sunday format. I know that many of Watterson's Sunday strips got more creative when he was allowed to be so with them, but it's like the strip is, in more ways than one, leaving a reminder of its legacy for the finale.

That's especially poignant to me.

I love this one. It makes fun of itself. It has a lot of recursive layers (Hobbes wants to draw a cartoon of a painting of a comic, all while being within a comic). And it makes fun of itself for having that recursion.
