A lot of people do, and possibly not just for the sake of shitposting like Octavian, and I have to ask how and why?

Because Jaune isn't even Mile's self insert. He's the guy Miles wanted to be in High School. So even though the personality is shit he has a personality of his own, and that personality is something everyone who self inserts as Jaune seems to ignore.

For one thing aside from that stupid as shit bullying sequence Jaune has demonstrated on several occasions that he has big clanking brass balls for someone with no superpowers. And while he might be a fuckwit, he's not nearly as awkward as people think he is or portray him as in fanfiction wankery.

The guy goes after shit he wants instead of wondering why the girls don't come after him. He wanted to be a hunter so he forged some transcripts uprooted himself from everything he ever knew and moved to a strange land. He wanted Weiss and pursued her.

I mean the reason he's not banging Pyrrha isn't because he's too scared to pursue because shes Pyrrha Champion, celebrity and above all else. It's because she's Pyrrha Nikos his friend and partner.

So are people just ignoring all of that or do they just not watch the show?

I mean he's basically a proto Ryan.

JNPR probably not, given how they seem to talk in the past. In fact, I'd wager based on a lot of RT's attitude, any paid DLC to come out would probably be well after development is "completed". But eventually the game is going to come out of Early Access and probably cost more money once it has more content.

I've been thinking, it sorta be argued that Roman Neo, Mercury and Emerald all have quite similar base personalities. They're all openly immoral, smug and enjoy beating up heroes or innocents.

Yet that doesn't seem to hinder the quality of the villains side, even though it feels like it should just a bit? They all feel like they have enough elements that set them apart and their own good moments, and that makes up for the similarities.

I dunno, I feel like there's a lack of depth/variation in characterisation on the villains side, yet that doesn't seem to hold them back from being some of the best characters. Anyone else understand this feel?

I never got that feeling. More that he just didn't think of her that way because she was his friend. And pretty much the only reason he might actually become a hunter one day.

The tricky bit here is that you know for a fact that Miles and Kerry were being inconsistent as hell on this and probably don't have the answer themselves.

But seeing as he was perfectly willing to pursue Weiss Schnee an heiress it's probably not the question of competition.

It's probably because they have minimal explained character development, but the crew knows shit about the characters we don't.

Like, to us, they all display similar traits, but the people making the show know how they differ (probably) and that can go into the work and the performance. It makes them feel a little bit more different than they should based on what we have.

I feel like we're getting some significant character development now. We saw that Emerald actually does have a personal loyalty/affection for Cinder (and how it came to be), and that Merc has a pretty dark past.

But yeah, I think there's more to many characters than what we've seen, probably due to time constraints. But hopefully we'll keep getting revelations like we got with Merc/Em this ep.

Oh, definitely. Like, there's a whole thing with Ren and Nora they were gonna hit in Vol 2, but had to cut out, and probably won't get in in Vol 3. We learned a lot of rough lessons in pacing from Vol 1.

Duke from Tales of Vesperia is one but isn't the definitive example.

Villains that are like that because they got fucked over by some cosmic enitity or because the stars shifted are just victims.
They lash out at the world and I can't really call them villains.

Yeah, this is also Pyrrha's problem. She's too nice for her own good (hence Nora's "practice what you preach"). Jaune clearly wants to ask Weiss, so Pyrrha butts out, even after a couple rejections and Jaune deciding not to challenge the frozen ocean. But Pyrrha has to be stoic or one of those many classical Greek-ish traits and doesn't say shit.

The manga is supposed to be a self-contained story. Certain things that M&K have given the go-ahead for will be put into canon.
Overall the manga is not canon and exists mainly to advertise RWBY in Japan.
In the end the manga will be far better than the show but will end after three volumes or so.
The above is really just me bullshitting but I wouldn't be surpised if it was true.

I dunno. Chapter 1 was quite good for an intro chapter but, to me, Chapter 2 really felt too much like Shirow's own take on Ruby. Doesn't help that he's already created an inconsistency with the show, having Ruby starting to do the rose petal thing only after arriving at Beacon.

I'd want a RWBY comic series to be tightly in line with the show, and I'm not sure the manga is going to do that.

well as long as it's all canon material for characters that still supposedly interact with the main cast, then you could easily assume that the episodes could make some references to things that were established in the side comics. like, in a way where it doesn't impact the plot, but for the guys who do a double-take and go "wait what the hell? why is ozpin's mug completely different?" they'll ask or seach around and find the webcomic, where they discover a little story, something like this:

I'm actually terrible at writing, I know this from experience. the best I can say I can do is scenario crafting, but actually fleshing out the bits to make a cohesive story with dialogue flow and all that is hard on me. it's like those "idea guys" you hear about now and then.

a good writer can still take a bad idea and make it a fun read
a bad writer will usually still make a bad story even if it came from a good idea

this is why writing is far more important than having good ideas, but the best I can do is provide direction for stories and bounce input back and forth with someone who actually CAN write.

one I've always wanted though was to see neo doing various odd jobs around vale while in different disguises each time, just so cinder could learn more about the state of the city and what the citizens involved in different organizations might be planning, as well as establishing connections to exploit later.

the main focus would be her just doing everyday jobs though, and somehow getting through it entirely nonverbally. it'd be neat to see how a good writer would make that interesting.

Ever play SOMA? A part of SOMA deals with that same thing, about robots not realizing they're robots, and think they're people, even when it was obvious they weren't. Alpha went through the same thing before Caboose killed him, he just went around with the delusion that he was human, and then later a ghost. Tex played along with him for his sake.

the problem with subjects far enough removed from the knowledge base though is that not only do you not have something relatable to build off of, but you risk delving into the can of worms that is inventing your own canon. this can lead to situations where the story is entirely a reflection of the author's wishes, which is the inverse problem of being overly friendly to readers being able to self-insert.

the best balance as a starting point usually mixes things we know and can't really dispute with things that we don't know. this is often achieved by putting a character we know in a setting we know of but whose details are ambiguous, or in a situation we haven't seen them in before. it can still be botched that way, but it's initially farther from that slippery slope.
