Maybe it's because I've been showing the un-coloured version as well, and I've been slow with the updates, so it's like it's not going anywhere.

But on the other hand, I admit I'm having troubles wrapping this up. I think in two more strips, the conversation topic will change, and goes with something different. The one that follows the fake teeth I showed before is the last one before moving on.
Then I won't be able to show anything because it's gonna be nsfw for a while.

I have been waiting so long to use this premise. every time I see someone dramatically finish someone else's sentence from above a skylight or something it NAGS at me to tear it apart

y'know I've been thinking about pacing and panels like that one anon advised, and I think I get more across with word bubble placement.

but once again I feel like the punchline here is weak, so any suggests would be a pair of breasts. That is, crits would be tits.

funny how similar this is to depression. same basic advice: try to stop caring. obviously you're getting stuck on this one thing, and while it DOES matter, caring about it disproportionately is worse than not caring at all.
just do some drawings and put them in order. you can move it around later
>>
>>78398548

>>78395617
Um. I suppose it's well made but I feel like it would suit the Happiness and Cyanide crowd more than me personally.
>>
>>78398607
Not when the main characters are Nazis. It has to not feel like a Nazi made it. I doesn't really with your comic but I'm not really sure where it's going.
>>
>>78398597
I'll take this advice, Anon. And give it another go.
>>
>>78398525
I thought about it, but problem is, that my comic is not strictly XXX. So anyone outside the regulars here in HYW might get the wrong impression of what to expect from my work because it's in a XXX thread.

I'm not sure that's what I'd like. I'll take this chance to practice on other works, and bother y'all with feedback here as always.
>>
>>78398661
not that guy, I just think nazis are hilarious
that's been basically the point of most of their depictions outside of the used-to-be-about-history-channel. i think mel brooks once said he took pleasure in making hitler look so ridiculous that nobody could possibly take his ideas seriously again
>>
>>78399000
I have that worry sometimes too
just post that fact in the thread, if you're concerned. "here's the porn pages. if you care about the plot go to (site)"
>>
>>78398577
this is really neat to me, the sort of.. geometrically consistent strange cartoony animals.. as if drawings come to life.
just 2 things mate:
-in the first panel her eyes should be higher. everything else is in the right place.
-that's a hell of an awkward size to read, at least on my browser. i have to switch from fit-on-screen which is illegible to full-size which is too massive to see even a single panel at once. it would be appreciated if you resized somewhat smaller before sharing your WIPs in the future. which I hope you'll do!
>>
>>78399211
Thanks, man!

>in the first panel her eyes should be higher
Alright
>it would be appreciated if you resized
Sorry about that. I didn't think it would be so big. Is opening the image in a new tab not easier? That's what I usually do.

Thanks for the input. I rarely ever come to these threads and when I do I never post anything of my own. I've only ever posted something once before.

>>
>>78398577
Not really, at least not in my opinion. The first panel would be neat if not for the horrible chicken scratch on the girl. The second panel doesn't read all that well. The third should take more place on the page at the expense of second, fourth and fifth. Is this an explosion? Are they being blown away? Because if anything, it looks like they're running down a hill instead. Why are the last two panels so big? There's so much unused space in them that could be used for more important things on the page. Same goes for the Manga Studio Margins © you are using.

Now, the general level of your art is not good. The creatures are passable when they aren't drawn like a cardbard cutout. In this regard panel 1 is fine, panel 4 is not. The human is drawn badly, but I'm a bit biased towards proper anatomy, so maybe others would not agree with me.

If this is a sketch and not the finished version, either wait with posting until you have it ready or be more specific with your questions. While I'm at it, your page looks kinda Pokemon-inspired, what is it about?
>>
>>78399410
>horrible chicken scratch on the girl
I guess I should have said that it's just in the sketch phase.
>2nd panel
Noted
>it looks like they're running down a hill instead
A little of both but it should be more clear.
>Why are the last two panels so big? There's so much unused space in them that could be used for more important things on the page
Noted. I didn't really put much into the paneling because it's just a one off test. I definitely should have though.
>when they aren't drawn like a cardbard cutout.
That was kinda the intent?
>anatomy
Where does the anatomy stick out as especially bad?
>what it is about
Nothing really. It's just a page I did on a whim with no real context. I guess they're trying to catch that big monster? I was thinking about Cencoroll when I drew it.

>>78399522
Rayman as a whole (but DEFINITELY Origins) is actually a HUGE inspiration to me. I fucking ADORE the art in Rayman Origins, especially the characters. It's probably what I'd say is closest to how I want my art to look.

Oh I love both Origins AND Legends a ton. I think Legends is the better game (though some things about it bother me), but Origins is just closer to how I want my own stuff to look. I prefer the characters with outlines and solid cel shading over the painted look. Both look WONDERFUL, though.

More importantly, comic page is looking good, I like the expressions!

Comics that normally dont update today update...updated. How important is updating on holidays and special events?
>>
>>78408729
Not very important to me personally. It's nice, but I don't really care if they do, because it's just gonna be a pinup or an omake.
>>
>>78408729
if it's a daily comic, it's a major waste not to
otherwise? i reccommend against doing it every single year. you get this thing where these characters celebrate halloween and then immediately christmas.. many many times.. while the rest of the comic indicates very little time has passed
>>
>>78408729
For a gag strip, probably not very. For a story comic, I'd say having consistent updates no matter what is pretty good. I'd also recommend having a buffer so you don't have to work oh holidays.

Vince Guaraldi is always appropriate.

Artist and I had a nice Christmas meal at a Denny's in New Jersey, in which we ate horrific food and talked about lasers and movies and how we'll be done with this first story arc by May at the latest.

So happy holidays and such to y'all.

I love the monster designs. They really shine in that first panel. In the fourth panel, the monster looks too flat but it could work if your going for humor. Also, in the third panel the hostile monster looks much farther away than in the first panel. Did it get thrown back by rebound or is that a different monster?

Hard to judge the whole thing at this stage but I think it's going in the right direction.

How many webcomics do you know that seem like they're intentionally being dragged out too long? .

I mean story based webcomics. Not slice of life comics, where the point is to kind of keep it going a while.
>>
>>78417684
This is a relic of a different era, and I know I'm being part of the problem by still staying updated, but MegaTokyo. The 12th chapter just started, but the 11th lated over 5 years for what ended up not really moving the story in as significant a way as I would've hoped. Most of this slowness is exacerbated by the fact that Fred always misses his updates, and the site can go months without a comic.
>>
>>78418199
yeah I check it every day too but I can't remember the last time it ever had a new comic. i literally remember nothing about the story whatsoever, that's how long it's been. it's just various random art.
>>
>>78418199

That comic is so behind in so many different ways. It's amazing he still draws in that blobby faux animu style that hasn't been popular since the early to mid 2000s.

That also reminds me of No Pink Ponies. Eisu is shit with schedules and that comic apparently still takes place way back in the past.

Maybe webcomics need to adopt a sliding timescale like Marvel.
>>
>>78418386
hey some of us still like that style.. it's hardly blobby. and as i recall, it was never a popular style. I'm not even sure how to describe it
in any case the flaw is in the writing. it's like what if egoraptor never replaced jontron and just tried to be the singular game grump. It would have been a lot like megatokyo
>>
>>78418428

The rounded heads were practically just circles. Weird half-animu style done in pencil. To me it's just a relic of the 00s. I stopped reading a long long long time ago and remembered nothing really happening and they managed to drag out drama for chapters.

>>78425851

Happens when someone posts your stuff and link somewhere and some people check it out. It also depends on how many pages you have because each person will likely look at every page. So even though your numbers dropped you seem to have a higher number of usual visitors at the end.
>>
>>78426455
>Happens when someone posts your stuff and link somewhere and some people check it out.
But it doesn't match the amount of visitors... or maybe I just don't understand what pageviews mean. I haven't seen my comic featured anywhere when I got the spikes, those weren't even update days.
>>
>>78426576

Doesn't matter. All it takes for someone to link you in some way and a lot of people check it out. Those views are the entire site. That's how mine are. And I have breakdowns of what pages got what views. It could also count for someone clicking on a page, going to another, and then coming back to that page.
>>
>>78426576

An otaku kid ends up in a fantasy world with elves and shit, but with modern technology.
He's forced to fight the demon lord, but instead, he teams up with him against the empire.
Simple concept, but it works well enough for a comedy story with only 4 panels.
>>
>>78431241

I would advise against that. It's not necessary and that'd give that sentence three commas. Only if the kid pauses after saying "hey." Otherwise it's perfectly fine for him to say "Hey Demon Lord,".
>>
>>78431469
I actually had a comma in it at first, but deleted it because it felt weird.
English isn't my native language, though, so I wasn't sure about it.

>>
>>78431497

You don't need it. Commas are for pauses and to keep clauses separate. Yes you can have a comma after "hey" but it's not necessary and works better without it.
>>
>>78431469
Personally I'd suggest going full minimalist and just
"Can we buy this, please?"

There's no need to specify that he's talking to the demon lord - he's the only other guy in the comic. Cut everything you don't need, y'know?
>>
>>78431626

I think the first bit is nice and comes across as childish. He's a kid that's casually talking to a demon lord. It fits.
>>
>>78431626
I want the "Demon Lord" in it, because it sounds weird.
He has a real name (Falk), but Kevin always calls him Demon Lord, for some reason. I guess I just think it's cute.
>>
>>78431696
Well guess what, fuckboy?

It is cute.
>>
>>78431469
>It's not necessary
I want people like you to fucking die. Fuck you. It is absolutely necessary.
>>
>>78431696
In that case I'd go with "Demon Lord, can we please buy this?" to keep the number of commas down.
>>
>>78431771

That's also good. Also, what about "Mr. Demon Lord"?
>>
>>78431819
That's awfully close to "Demon Lord-senpai," brother.
>>
>>78431951

Without is just as good but I feel the first part comes across as a little plain. I like the extra flavor of a "hey" or adding "Mr."

It never represented a pause. Not all commas are pauses.
>>
>>78432764
They are both ostensibly and subjectively. When you read a comma, you pause. That's how it works. That's why we have started leaving them out, because we have stopped pausing after the word 'hey'. That word has had a long history and metamorphosis and in its current form it does not require a comma afterwards.

Hey /co/, new fag here. I'm trying to start my web comic, but I want to know what drawing tablets are my best option. I am looking for one that displays what I'm drawing on the tablet and if possible, has layers. Pressure sensitivity is a plus.

>>78433345

All of them have pressure sensitivity. It's not a plus it's required. You're looking for a cintiq but those are very expensive. If you've never used a tablet before start out with Wacom's cheapest one. You really don't NEED anything better than that but some people want the extra added functionality and pressure.

that's in the image program, not the tablet

I love your comics. I don't know a lot about printing but if you need funding kickstarter may be an option, I got several comics from kickstarter projects and it always turned out very nice.

Also not trying to be annoying but don't you think in the panel upper right hand corner instead of "which" it might sound better to use "whence"?
Just a suggestion.
>>
>>78434974
true, but when they differ you can generally correct people
however, people do decide grammar. all grammar is decided by somebody. and we have collectively all acknowledged the undeniable truth that you pause when you comma, and decided to stop comma-ing in places where we once paused but no longer do so.
>>78434918
so no matter what this site says, you will believe it and correct others?
>>
>>78435022
or just 'to the hell you came from'
funny this comes up in grammar discussion, but that 'from which you came' is an example of grammar everyone THINKS is grammar, but is not and has never been: the 'don't end with a preposition' rule.. causing people to twist their sentences all up. it was never a rule, it was simply a reality in latin, that you CAN'T split up an infinitive. and for a while, people had fucking huge hardons for latin so they insisted the same for english despite english being perfectly able to
>>
>>78435097
Exactly. If a character would pause, then you put a comma. If they wouldn't pause, you don't put one.
>>
>>78434974
People talk does not always correlate to how it's written. When you say "hello anon" it's written "hello, anon". There's no pause because that's not what the comma represents.

>>78435097
http://www.grammarbook.com/punctuation/commas.asp
Look at as many sites as you want. It's the same on all of them.
>>
>>78435307
No, when you say "hello anon" you are saying it without pausing so it would be written as "hello anon." If you said "hello, anon" with a pause then it would be written as such.

This is really not that difficult to understand.

>>
>>78435307

>>
>>78435415
>I don't care if you think a comma always means a pause.
well it does, anon. deal with it.
Why else would we need punctuation there? What purpose would it serve?
>>
>>78435419
There hasn't been a change. How people speak is not 1 to 1 with how it is represented in written language. Look at how many words aren't pronounced anything like how they look. It is written as such because someone is not saying it to you where you can hear their embellishment and cues. It's written that way so it's perfectly clear what's being said.

>>78435437
You are factually wrong.
>>
>>78435465
>How people speak is not 1 to 1 with how it is represented in written language.
language's job is to represent how people speak. Now, people often speak incorrectly, but the fact is that the correct way to speak does change a bit over time. Generally the old ways remain correct too, the wrong ways are just ways that are arrived at via ignorance and poor education.
There was a time when written language didn't bother with spaces, let alone full stops. They evolved to suit the need. Right now the comma suits the need of denoting pauses, period.

You cannot be this stupid.
>>
>>78435415
>I don't care if you think a comma always means a pause
It does, though. 99.999% of readers will read it as a pause. The only ones who won't are autistic, obtuse morons like you.
>>
>>78435538
Let's eat is a complete sentence, of course it's going to be a RELATIVE pause. We're talking about single word exclamations. It's impossible not to pause somewhat after a single word imperative verb.
But even if that wasn't the case, it wouldn't prove squat. That would be the "its", the exception that exists because there would be confusion otherwise. There's no confusion with 'hey grandma'
>>
>>78435588
Just because you say it is based on bullshit you think does not mean that's how it is done properly. The only exception to it is in a letter where you might not put the comma if you don't want to but you would after.

question for artists.

I always loved art and everything related to it, problem is I'm shit at drawing and even when I do I hardly draw at all (It's kinda the feeling of you wanting to do something but then another thing pops up in your mind and your determination fades away)

Still I want to hold tight to that dream, so after begging to my parents I'm being sent to an arts school in vancouver, even tough I'll probably enter there as a rusty nail.

Is it too late? I see people drawing all the time and feel regret when I'm not doing it, I want to draw, but I get fearful of being shit and stop there. most famous guys say that they were drawing since little and I'm already a grown up and have hardly drawn in my life.

I still want to learn how to draw nontheless
>>
>>78437227
You don't go to art school to learn to draw.
>>
>>78437227
Cancel going to art school right this second. You are wasting so much money. Art school will not teach you how to be an artist. Art school is for artists to hopefully get better. If you absolutely want to learn just get into some non-college classes. I'm sure you can find some.

My point is college isn't for someone who isn't already artist. It polishes and is good for connections. That's about it.

Glen Keane *accidentally* ended up in animation. He meant to apply to fine arts but his application ended up in animation and he decided to go on a whim.

But, again, do whatever you want.

As far as art school goes: tl;dr It's whatever you make it.

If you show up to class, do your assignments, have a decent time and come out with average grades, then you'll just be an average artist. Which, may not sound bad, but in any sorta creative industry, the worst thing you can be is forgettable. So if you're just 'okay' and float with the trends, sure, you might pick up some work here and there, but that's a super-duper uphill battle.

But if you bust your ass outside of class, give yourself projects between projects, hang out with professors, keep and ear to the ground for internships, and just keep working: You've got a better chance of coming out as a pretty good artist. Plus, if you're geographically around where opportunity strikes, you've got a better chance of it striking you.

But if art school's outta your price range, that's totally understandable. The best advice I can give is to just surround yourself with work you're super into and try and deconstruct the shit out of it. Plus, yknow, practice in general.

You don't gotta come to the table 100% inspired to churn out your opus; but if you start drawing at like 60%, within an hour of working you'll usually find yourself 100% in it.

I just finished the first draft of my web comic, and I've begun to work on a revised edition. While I do this, I was hoping to get some feedback.

The comic is about a pair of adventurers that have a tendency to ruin everything. Some material is NSFW. It's drawn traditionally, with the cover colors and text is done digitally.
You can read it here: Freelancer.webcomic.ws

Any and all feedback is encouraged.

nah not that, I mean people telling people "you're not good enough to belong here" without actually implying that they themselves are, merely that they have such good taste they know who's good and who isn't. I guess the closest thing would be fandom wars. Nobody is saying THEY are as good as that show, merely that their show is better than the others'

Hey anons. So I figure my resolution for 2016 will be to start drawing again. I'm almost 30 and if I ever want to create a comic I have to start somewhere.

How do you combine art and a job? I'm doing a PhD and when I get home, cook, and finish the dishes I am exhausted.
>>
>>78449657
If you're seriously passionate about it, you'll find the energy to draw. I worked 52 hours in a warehouse last week and I still found time and energy to draw because it's what I love.
>>
>>78449657
>How do you combine art and a job?
You just have to cut out having-a-life
>PhD
... nevermind, you're fucked. But in a way we could all stand to be a bit more fucked, y'know? Just be patient. You'll have the rest of your fabulously wealthy life to pursue your hobbies, this is just the shitty 20s-wasting part you do as a sort of insurance plan.
>>
>>78449657
Well, you don't have to cook every day, do you? If you make enough for two days, you can work on art while you're reheating it every other day.

Second, set aside a consistent time period where you're gonna work on it. It doesn't need to be more than twenty minutes a day starting out, you just need to get into the habit. Even if you can't manage more than twenty minutes every day, that's still over two hours a week.
>>
>>78447279

Since I commission that's not really a profit but any money offsets what I have to pay. I'm more pleased about the upward progress I'm making. I'm pulling in more views than I have in a long time and it's without spending any real money on advertising.

This was that progress I was talking about earlier when I showed my numbers were down from spending a lot of money advertising.
>>
>>78449815
>You'll have the rest of your fabulously wealthy life to pursue your hobbies

I'm doing a PhD in Humanities.

>>78449768

I spend my entire day looking at a computer screen. Coming home and staring at a screen or a piece of paper for even more hours is just too much for me.
I guess I'll need to plan drawing time in my weekends or so.

You guys are inspirational though, I just need to suck it up.

I have no comics to share yet but have a bumblebee thing.

>tfw your most recent drawing is from 2009

Ouch.
>>
>>78449962
Maybe you can structure it so that you can do all the easy stuff that doesn't take a lot of concentration during the week - like, you can do thumbnails and sketches for a page even while you're watching tv or whatever. Then in the weekends you can do the actual full-size pages.
>>
>>78449657
I finished my PhD, got a real job, and now have time to draw. Maybe finish the PhD first.
>>
>>78450142

I'm scared I'll just keep postponing it though. I already postponed improving my art to do a BA, then to do an MA. Now the PhD will take 4 years too.

You might be right in the end, but I have to try I guess.

>>78450117

Also a good tip, thank you.
>>
How important are sound effects to you, /hyw/?

I'll spend upwards of several minutes per sound effect sometimes. I feel like I'm on the cusp of truly figuring out the science of crafting the perfect artisanal sound effect for every occasion but I'm not quite there yet.

Am I autistic?
>>
>>78450202
Reading loads of fanslated manga has made me realize I really don't miss sound effects when they're gone. If the art's good enough, you don't need text telling you what it sounds like.
>>
>>78449879
That or just eat frozen shit.

>>
>>78450293

Humanities is the part of science that has no money. For my part I study ancient cultures and languages.

>>
>>78450202
iunno dude i just come up with them automatically, i think i'm synaesthetic for that
>>78450272
that said, yeah, i tend to leave them out when bored. i feel like I'd have more fun doing foley than drawing sound effects. i wish I was doing animation.
>>
>>78450442
I come up with mine automatically too, but I spend time refining them, to get the most bang for my proverbial buck.
>>
>>78450375
>>78450416
I guess I don't understand why you can't just read books about it instead of blowing tons of money on a doctorate in a field with no money, but have fun! That shit is pretty interesting. even if I reject/deny at least half if not 2/3rds of everything I read about it.
>>
>>78450466
>even if I reject/deny at least half if not 2/3rds of everything I read about it.

And rightly so, most stuff written about it is utter shit. I don't know why I do it, chasing a stupid dream I guess. It makes me happy.

But hey, working in comics is the same thing in a way. Almost no money, but it's worth it when you do something you love. It makes me happy when I see (web)comic artists make it.
>>
>>78450533
Man chasing your dreams is never stupid.. and by that I mean it's always equally stupid. I just wonder why that's your dream
>>
>>78450533
Well, knowing shit about (pre)history is a pretty good starting point for making an interesting story so at least your stupid dreams synergize.
Looking forward to hearing of your progress.
>>
>>78450600

I don't know. As long as I can remember I've said I wanted to do this. My parents are both gardeners so they have no clue where it came from.

I had to choose between univesity and art school after high school, and it was quite difficult at the time. But seeing /co/'s experiences with various art schools I feel like a dodged a bullet - I doubt I would have cut it in the comic or animation industry. I'm neither talented or motivated enough.

This is the right office is an awkward sentence. did you mean Is this the right sentence?

That aside dino girl is cute
>>
>>78451355
he said "(is) this the right office?" which makes sense. he's looking for the correct office to enter. Not sure why he would be talking about a sentence
>>
>>78451355
"Is" is implied, yeah. "Is this the right office?"

And thanks.
>>
>>78451722
I meant office. Sorry, sometimes when I'm typing, I end up formulating two thoughts into one. I meant Is this the right office.
>>78451736
The is may be implied but because of the hello before it, it sounds really odd. Sometimes how a person would actually say something doesn't translate well to written word.
>>
>>78451839
It translated fine to me, but that is a good point.
>>
>>78451129
>>78451736

"This the right office?" is another way to ask. It's more casual and is a way some people ask. To me, omitting certain words makes the character seem tough.

>Are you talking to me?
>You talking to me?
>>
>>78452025
I mentioned that it's the Hello that makes it sound odd. The hello is kind of formal (who says hello fully anymore unless they are scared or at an interview or something) so the omitting of words sounds wrong some how. if it was more like "Hey. This the right office?" it would sound more correct though in this context Hey wouldnt work.
>>
>>78451839
Is English your second language, anon? It's fine.
>>
>>78452118
No, it isn't. I just think about many things at once and sometimes it shows when I type.
>>
>>78436156
I think you mean

>I hate this thread, now.

Or

>Now, I hate this thread
>>
>>78452097

I don't think it's that jarring to have something like that. Kind of like "Hello? Anybody here?" as opposed to "Hello? Is anybody here?" Both sound just as good.

I don't think "hey" is an appropriate word to use when not sure who is being addressed. When you're yelling at a person or a group you would say "hey" but when you are yelling at an empty house and you think someone is hiding somewhere, you'd say "hello?"
>>
>>78452118
>Is English your second language, anon? It's fine.

Not everybody is always perfect in their English.

God, it feel like a asshole thing to say to a anon.
>>
>>78452200
I did say Hey wouldnt work in this context. I also said hello works when the person is afraid. You would as Hello? Anyone there? when you are afraid. This convo is getting stupid. He can leave the awkward sentence if he wants to. It's not like I read his comic anyway.
>>
>>78452234

I see.
>>
>>78452215
no but maybe people whose english isn't that good shouldn't be giving advice is all
they CAN however give useful advice on how clear the language is to a poor speaker.. which is important sometimes.

Towards the end of your comment you want the person on their backfoot. For no reason.

Correcting the less professional people here isn't something I would consider "useless". If your comic is good enough without the people here, then leave and post elsewhere. You don't see actual professional webcomic authors/artists in these threads for a reason.

I have a story I wanted to try. Here's a part of the script. Too hammy?

[Emily’s room]
Woman: So, Emily, tell me about your fears.
Emily: I don’t want to die.
Woman: You have nothing to worry about. You’re a healthy young lady.
Emily: No… you don’t understand… I NEVER want to die.
Woman: [She needs to be stopped.]

[Hallway]
General: A little overdramatic, aren’t we, doctor?
Woman: You brought me here to evaluate her mental health. I’ve given you my findings and solutions. And you have disregarded them!
General: You want to put her on drugs, you even listed a lobotomy as an option.
Woman: As a last resort! She’s a super genius ten-year-old that is mentally unhinged! Her fear of her own mortality has eroded her psyche. How could you let her work on… on… a formula for immortality and not stop her!
General: She failed and created a medicine that makes stem cell research useless.
Woman: And she also created a virus that killed thirty of your scientists in seconds.
General: You’re afraid of what she’s capable of; I’m a bit more optimistic.
Woman: Whether it’s saving lives or ending them, it’s all good to you, isn’t it, General?
General: Watch what you say. On this base, confidentiality is paramount. Things tend to disappear before they can get out to the public.
Woman: Another day, another veiled threat. All right, I understand.
General: Good. You’ve been given a rare opportunity, doctor, to study the growing mind of what will become the greatest genius in the history of mankind. We will guide her and humanity as a whole will benefit from her.
Woman: To hold off her own, she will bring death to us all.
General: No… just to our enemies.
>>
>>78459766
No no no.

None of those are community centers. Those are all places we're trying to gather traffic towards, not pulling traffic from.
>>
>>78459790
You have to network with people on places like tumblr and DA as well as go to cons and such. Trying to get anywhere just by going here is just yelling into a vacuum. It's not like theres a ton of people that come to these threads.
>>
>>78459928
You copped out.

You say "You have to network" but you're not listing other locations on the internet.

Jesus. These are things so basic I've forgotten times I ever had to explain them to people.
>>
>>78460028
Are Tumblr and DA not part of the internet now? I mean I know they have their problems but they are on the internet last I checked. I hate the whole networking thing so I don't do it myself. I know other people that have gotten success, not fame but relative monetary stability, by going to RP forums or fandom forums and networking on those. If you have such a golden amount of knowledge, than surely you know this isn't a great place for that. Why don't you share your wealth of information? I should clarify I am not being sarcastic. If you have information for the hopeful artists here, than share.
>>
>>78460170
When is the last time you seriously used Deviantart to try to gather attention towards an original creation? And when has anyone successfully used tumblr to do that?

>Why don't you share your wealth of information?
Because I'm searching for it myself. I get physically repulsed when I draw fanart more than once a blue moon. It'd be like reversing gravity. I cannot do it.

Any "How to" advice has to omit copious fanart, or it's useless to me. It's fucking nothing.

These threads were made to be a deterrent to that, and they were great in the very beginning. Very active. Everyone was saying a whole bunch of bottled up things for the first time and it was like fireworks. But now these threads are a staple, and we've got at least 2 guys in every single thread who just lower the bar to an unacceptable level. And what's more, we aren't immune to the standard 4chan bullshit.

If we successfully made a non-anonymous public forum out there somewhere, successfully moderated and categorized, that would be the best thing at this point. But it would also suck if someone tried to do it and it flopped.
>>
>>78460405
Here's the thing anon. I clearly have just as many answers as you do. The only thing I can say is that it seems to me that the way to success is to have a relatable project first and your passion project comes second. Would Cucumber Quest be as successful as it is if hiimdaisy didn't come first?Look at the popularity of autobio comics like Sarah Draws Stuff. People like these things because they have some kind of familiar quality either from being fanart or generic enough that it's something people can relate to. Unfortunately a lot of passion projects and great ideas have a foreign quality to people and unless you are very lucky, people will stay away. It sucks. I know it does. The reason fanart works is because it is familiar, an ice breaker. If you can find some other way to break the ice, than go for it.
>>
>>78460405
lackadaisy is pretty successful and that started on deviantart
>>
>>78460856
And just how fucking long ago was that?
>>
>>78460855
Fuck fanart.

If you say "No you have to draw fanart" I'm not listening to you.

Figure something else out and then get back to me, and I'll be trying to do the same. What you don't do, is concede.
>>
>>78460963
I don't like fanart either anon. I don't make it. Im saying in order to get people in, there has to be something people want to see. A familiar quality. Some find that making fanart is how they get that. Some other people find a different route. We are both looking for a different route.
>>
>>78461095
Pretend I have a peanut allergy to drawing fanart.

And then pretend that me being a success, will end african starvation. And then slow climate change. And then legalize pot.

After pretending these things, let's come up with a plan. Let's USE THE GREY BRAINS WE WERE GIVEN.
>>
>>78460939
Why does that matter?
>>
>>78461164
As stated, I don't like fanart either. The creators of other properties have great ideas and whatever but they dont interest me artwise. Of course use your brain. We should all be using our brains. I can guarantee though, what works for one of us wont work for the other. Lets be individuals. Cool? Cool.

The easiest and quickest path to getting attention is to draw fanart. It's a fact, and it's been proven, time and time again. If you don't want to do it that way, ok, that's fine. But don't whine your ass off if it takes forever to build up an audience. Them's the breaks.
>>

Again, pretend that it's the hardest most mind-destroying thing in the world for someone else.

Yes, I get it, but there's no other advice we have to offer here other than post regularly, consistently, and draw things you like & are passionate about, and hope that other people may like those things too. Post your work on tumblr, twitter, and instagram, those are hot spots for artists right now, etc etc etc. If you think this place is so useless then go ask again somewhere else because it's obvious that nobody here has the magic answers you seek and you're being insufferable about it by snapping at everybody. Art skill isn't really that important. It's about having good ideas

If you're ok with having a mediocre comic, then sure.

Comics are like books and art put together.

Stop fucking think that Art is ALWAYS important.
>>
>>78462523
It doesn't exist.
>>
>>78463055
A comic is a visual medium. The reason there are pictures is to make the story more compelling with visuals.

The only time shitty art is acceptable is if you're making a shitty gag a day comic. And I'm not shitting on gag a day webcomics. There are good gag a day webcomics with a decent style and art.

Goddamn it, You are the same anon that thinks

Good art = Good comic.

Well, It isn't. Good writing and story-telling and decent art = Good comic.
>>
>>78463305
Shit art + good story =/= good webcomic

It's always either bad or mediocre.

The art is important to the comic. So is the writing. Both need to be good if you want to push through all the mediocre webcomics on the internet.

Do you really think a comic with a good story can be compelling if it has art like >>78414901

(I'm not trying to shit on Dewd. It's ok for the type of comic he writes.)

One Punch Man has a funny story.

Also. Not the best choice. Because it was greatly improved by a great artist when it was made into a manga.

What will be your reaction face?

I'm not here to discuss rather ONE is better than Murata.

I'm just saying despite the art being absolutely terrible the [WRITING] was good enough to get it popular enough to have a pro manga artist adapt it which lead to one of the biggest anime of the season.

shit art + good story = good webcomic

While not exactly true. The elements of truth to your statement is part of the problem.

The site is so bloated, so huge. That no one new is being found through it. Check out the front page. And then check it out tomorrow. And then the day after. See if you find a pattern to which users tend to reach it. Check how many favorites something has to get, to be on the front.

It's just to bloated. No one is finding each other this way. To an unknown, who only wants to draw the new thing they want to give to the world, there has been no consideration.

You know who has?

Hentai-Foundry. You can get 20+ followers from your very first upload there. Fanart or no. How? The quality control of what gets past the upload filters. That means very few things actually make it through. And that means, that "Newest" section that we all skim over on the frontpage of artsites, because it's mostly garbage? You suddenly have a reason to look at it. Your first upload will hang there for like an hour. An hours worth of frontpage visitors will see your original work's thumbnail. People will find you, because you were good enough. That is incredibly functional.

I'm almost done with an update for Little Bot

It will be posted near the first of the next thread, and everyone will have to see it. Everyone.

I don't mean to read too much into your post in case those were unrelated statements, but I didn't mean that you have to KNOW the artist. Just contact them, whoever you admire. Not people who are just starting out like you
Or check out their page and they might already have tutorials up. For example Scandinavian Princess has some up on her(?) deviantart
>>78459767
well-written. a tad generic in places. The only thing I'd tweak is that 'she needs to be stopped' bit. at the very least that shouldn't be where it is, right? It should be after the scene change to the hallway
>>78460405
I feel like you have no idea what we do here. You also have other problems.
>>78462156
hooray, those are great! And these are great. You really do know comedy. I appreciate little bits like how one of the books isn't a porn title. i mean okay that's not what books look like when stacked, but fuckit. more readable this way.
>>78463833
ha, i'd never seen this before. I somehow have even more respect for whatsisname that drew oblongs than i had before.

I really like this banner.

I'll try to make something today. I had this design in my hear for a while for a slender, big forehead girl, but I can't put in paper what I have in my head.

no indication yet this one was feathered. not that I checked beforehand or anything I just drew a jurassic park one but without the frill I knew it shouldn't have even though that would be pretty cool actually but it belongs on something smaller like a composognathus or something that would be awesome
>>
>>78465207
See what happened is someone wrote a fanfiction about an anime and then because nobody was familiar with either, they were surprised each time they found out about them, as if the meme had been written into a fanfic, and the fic had been written into an anime
it's brilliant really.
>I'll try to make something today
make a new thread. Do it right now!
>I can't put in paper what i have in my head
I know just what you mean.. I think. And in particular I have that same thing that keeps wanting me to draw it. Something 80s-90s style with a scrunched up lower face area and big round forehead that nonetheless looks just perfectly proportioned. I keep wanting to. It beckons to me. I just got done rewatching all of dubbed sailormoon
>>
>>78465178
I'm glad you're looking forward to it. I think I'm actually in a position to keep uploading weekly instead of bi-weekly now.
>>
>>78465249
I need to re-watch SM, at least the first and S, the first because it's the only season Minako is not an Usagi clone and it's a cool character, and S for superior girl Hotaru

I can do the new thread, but I'll wait until this falls to page 10. Should we go for new year activity?
>>
I forgot to ask, I'm at the office right now, so I can't access pastebin, can someone make one that includes all the webcomic hosting sites? I think that's better than linking them directly in the thread.
>>
>>78465981
I don't even know all of the webcomic hosting sites.
