I'm late as fuck but damn. Is Joy the protagonist and antagonist at the same time?
>>
>>78342135
Yes, she wants to make Riley happy but is the reason things go to shit at the same time.

Yes, she's a character that is kind of shitty and nice at the same time.

Like people in real life.

Amazing how the moral of the entire movie can be summarized by one FOP scene.
>>
My Joy wants to get with Riley's Joy.

Fuck that. I don't want any part in this
>>
It's the most literal interpretation of the "man vs self" narrative there has ever been
>>
>>78342334
But Disgust is my favorite
>>
>>78342468
Not a bad second choice maybe
>>
>>78342376
That's generally how the moral to a story works
>>
>>78342135
She is a character who makes mistakes and has to deal with the consequences of those mistakes.
>>
If Sadness was in the right the whole time why didn't she defend her point? Would have saved the movie from happening.
>>
Yes. Man vs. Self isn't that rare of a thing in stories.
>>
>>78343080
Lack of confidence plus being shitted on all the time.
>>
>>78342135

To put it in short, yes...and no.

To give it to you long, Joy acts as our primary protagonist as well as an antagonist in the overall arc of the story. She wants the best for Riley and ultimately wants her to be happy, yet she's too caught up in wanting Riley to stay in a childlike state of optimism and suppressing the other emotions in order to keep her happy.

Joy does have good intentions and, at the end of the day, knows what needs to be done for Riley's benefit. However, it's her more selfish and semi-egotistical natures that get the best of her.

Yet, she isn't the only element in the film who adds to the conflict and therefore acts in some way as an antagonist.

>The move itself, putting pressure on the entire Andersen family.
>Mom and Dad, putting pressure on Riley to stay happy for their sake.
>Sadness, starting to act up as a result of being suppressed by Joy and the others in addition to the move, going so far as to being smei-literally "bottled up." ("The Circle of Sadness")
>Anger rashly deciding to run away back to Minnesota without realizing the consequences.
>Fear wanting to stop Anger, yet is too spineless to actually do anything.
>Disgust falling to what is the "right" thing to do as governed by her peers.

Joy does do actions that one could consider to be antagonistic, yet the film doesn't have a true, genuine "antagonist." If you wanted to pick something to put in it's place, I'd say that the ultimate antagonist of the movie is Riley towards herself (as someone said earlier, the most literal case of man vs. self), the concept of growing up and moving on (or just generally time itself)..or just San Francisco itself.

As for where Bing Bong fits into the puzzle, whilst he's meant to act as the extreme of what Joy wants (as per what Pete Docter's said on the matter) and he does end up getting Joy and Sadness into various jams (Abstract Thought, anyone?), he's ultimately the only truly innocent character in the movie.

Sad shit, but Joy in a mustache was cute enough to numb any feels.

he was passionate and she was emphatic. Also notice how none of them take actions by themselves. All emotions work together.

This. Remember that no emotion is their face value alone. Each of them possesses attributes that mingle and intertwine to make more complex and subtle feelings. Melancholy, Righteousness, Anticipation, etc.
It's only in children that we see one emotion dominating the others, or when played for laughs (the Bus Driver in the closing scene).

Joys break down was probably a major point in her owning up to being wrong, cause in the end even Joy itself was infected with Sadness
>>
Who would be your leading emotion?
>>
>>78344168
Well, other people are right, but get rid of Joy who is Riley's, neither can have disgust or fear be their main emotion, give the mom the feminine one and the dad the masculine one.
Its just elmination

No, fuck off.

Joy, but I think that's just because my emotions have a mutual understanding that if they let sadness take over for a second I'd swallow a handful of pills and they'd all be out of a job.

To me, the entire movie screamed, "we have to make sadness feel important" when, just fucking why?
Why not kick the bitch out?
>OH, BUT ONE OF RILEY'S SAD MOMENTS LEAD TO A HAPPY MOMENT!
No, fuck you, why not let a happy moment lead to another happy moment?

Honestly, answer me, /co/, if you lost the ability to feel sad tonight, how would your life decrease in quality at all?

I don't know who I would have said before, but now I can easily say Disgust would be my main, and I'm not sure how I feel about that. A little introspective and a little sassy.
>>
>>78346399
This...
>>
>>78342135
Protagonist means the main, the one around whom action is centered, the one you are supposed to identify with. Not necessary a good guy. So yes, Joy is a protagonist.
>>
>>78345672
Fear, obviously.
>>
>>78343080
Because Sadness didn't believe she was right.
>>
>>78342376
>Amazing how the moral of the entire movie can be summarized by one FOP scene.
Generally, the moral of any story can be summed up in one or two sentences.
>>
>>78345672
Anger/Fear.
When I'm anger I'm afraid I'll do something stupid, and when I'm terrified I'm pissed off at myself for being pathetic.
>>
>>78345672
Sadness. And I'm fine with that.
>>
I just saw the movie twice with some friends. Joy is a bitch, wow. Like she is just a bona-fide bully towards Sadness.
>>
>>78352921
Cause Sadness is (seemingly) worthless and never helped once. Then she starts destroying irreplaceable objects, at least from Joys point of view, right as things are at their worst. And then Sadness don't even have the courtesy to explain or even walk. I'd bully her too at the time.
>>
>>78353056
It might be that I relate a lot to Sadness that I see if that way but still, tone it down a bit.
>>
>>78353223
I never felt Joy acted unreasonably. Sadness was right but a pain in the ass about it.
>>
>>78354832
I disagree

Disgust

>>
>>78355237
That sounds like a lack of joy rather than any Disgust
>>
>>78355553

Disgust's the main one, they each have their time, but Disgust is the cruise control mode, in a general "why bother ?" way.
>>
>>78355677
That sounds like Sadness, mate.
>>
>>78355677
I think you're sadness too. Embrace it.
>>
> Joy wants what's best for Riley because she loves her
> But all the emotions basically are her, and control pretty much every single thing she says and does, even down to the ideas she has

I really didn't get this, why do they look at Riley like she's her own being? She may as well be a robot that they're controlling.
>>
>>78355677
cruise control sounds more like you have a bad idea jamming your controls.
you might need to open up to someone with some sadness.
>>
>>78346048

Sorrow is a part of being human, anon. There are times where you need to feel sad.
>>
>>78356130
>>78356387

Nah, Sadness is different, that's more like apathy, which for me is governed by Disgust.
>>
>>78342376
Yes that's usually how summaries work
>>
>>78345672
Fear and Anger have equal control and work together to make me one brave, passionate motherfucker.

Disgust takes control of me quite often to make me spend money on useless shit because muhterialism. Sekonda watch? Gross, that shit is too cheap. You need that Omega. Thanks, Disgust... Often Fear tells her to cool her shit because a watch is a watch just like clothes are clothes and cars are cars, but that's rare.

Joy often snuggles with Anger and Fear when I'm doing my bike racing. They all cheer me on, but Joy is always at the front going nuts, especially if I win.

Sadness doesn't have a lot to do, but she manages me well if I lose races or I think about my dad. I don't remain despondent for long, though. Onwards and upwards, my Joy will tell her, and she'll agree.

>>
>>78356475
It goes both ways. The emotions steer Riley, but Riley also influences the emotions, can change how they react, and can even shut them out entirely.

Riley isn't a robot, people can swallow their emotions and ignore them.

>Sadness interjects and makes Riley unhappy
>Joy tries to fix it and not let Riley have a traumatic core memory
>Mental breakdown
>"WELL THAT'S ONLY BECAUSE JOY TRIED TO TAKE CONTROL SO IT'S ENTIRELY HER FAULT! SHE SHOULD'VE KNOWN THAT BEING SAD WAS IMPORTANT DESPITE IT LITERALLY NEVER BEING IMPORTANT BEFORE!"

>Sadness refuses to walk and has to be pulled by Joy, delaying her return
>On the way out Sadness keeps corrupting earlier memories
>"SADNESS DID NOTHING WRONG, THIS IS STILL RILEY'S FAULT!"

The movie would have had literally no conflict if Sadness was thrown out a window at the earliest convenience.
