> Fun and games in the beginning, with a fucked up tone
> The series goes full-WTF at the tail end
>somewhat fulfilling conclusion but doesn't make up for all that other weird shit
The only two explicitly political manga I can think of are Ikigami and Assassination Classroom.
Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service had an arc about how much Japan is being an idiot about teaching World War II, but it's not a main plot issue.
That's vague as shit and could apply to a million billion things.
I mean, what? Gintama is a self-aware shonen parody. ATHF is weed t00nz and yes with zeroes and a zee fuck you.
All I could think of that's comparable to South Park is Sayonara Zetsubō Sensei.
Closest I can think of would be Shinometa, which was entirely about Japan's super excessive censorship and obscenity laws.
The most meta part of the show was that in the setting, curse words are illegal, and they were always bleeped. Nudity and porn are illegal, and all of it was censored to hell.
The best part was when they acknowledged that it was illegal to show a functioning sextoy on the show, then showed instructions for making one out of cornstarch, then said "oh, but this is just food, not a sextoy."
NGE wasn't really fun and games at the beginning. It was a take on shonen anime where the characters are actually have issues and not just a beacon of justice and friendship. While Morel Orel was satire mocking of Christians.
Morel Orel also didn't have that much of a fucked up ending. It was more depressing but overall bittersweet. NGEs wasn't fulfilling at all and was more of a final "Fuck you" to the audience from Anno. At least Morel Orel tried to please their audience. Especially with the bonus final episode with Doughy.
If anything, I'd say Morel Orel is more like PunPun, with the upbeat start and depressing but bittersweet end thing. But even then it's not a perfect comparison.
Japan's current strategy for the most part is "The Rape of Nanking is a bunch of bullshit, China's lying, we should have ruled the Pacific even today, be a patriot, rah rah Yukio Mishima was right".
surprised no one's posted this yet
What is the HunterXHunter of /co/?
Holy shit,nobody noticed?
Can't be bothered to open Paint but you completely get the idea.
>friend recommends this anime to me
>watch it as a favour
>litterally just a woman eating food and making snide comments
It's more of a newspaper strip than a cartoon.
Wakako-Zake is the best cartoon produced anywhere this year
the problem is that there aren't a lot of western cartoons that match the maturity, and quality of writing and characters found in the better animes.
pic related. There's no american cartoon that even approaches something like Dougram.
>Eehhh. Does Japan even have Political Anime/Manga?
Japs always got more content and the west is always more dense in content.
A western take on eastern concepts?
God, what's the name of that one anime from the /tg/ screencap about how the show is basically nothing but a D&D campaign where the players just dick around in the starting town instead of going on an adventure? That sounds pretty similar to Adventure Time.
I can't find a good picture of the car in Big O. You see clips of it in this promo
If you can't see the similarities between the Batman the animated series Batmobile and the car in Big O, you're fucking retarded
>tfw we'll never have a cartoon equivalent to FMA
No in fact the creator himself says he was influenced by Batman TAS while working for the project prior to making Big O. He also said he drew inspirations from 60's spy works and stuff like James Bond.
Inferno Cop. It even looks like something that would be on [AS].
And ya know TAS was made at sunrise studio partially and they made Big O.
They made these episodes for anyone curious:Pretty Poison
The Cat and the Claw: Part 1
The Clock King
Heart of Steel: Part 1
Heart of Steel: Part 2
I Am The Night
The Man Who Killed Batman
why are you so invested in this?
If someone points out the similarities between Alfred in Batman and Norman in Big O, are you gonna say "yeah because Batman was the first to have an elderly English butler"?
>Does Japan even have Political Anime/Manga?
The Legend of Koizumi
Both teams have equal amount of people, and they all fight weird aliens. (i.e the weird thing Kamina and Simon fight in the episode they first discover Gurren,or the pilot episode of Megas where they fight the Glorft)
Also, both stories for the shows are quite the same, and the fact that while Yoko,Simon and Kamina found Gurren buried under ground,Coop found Megas in a junkyard, sans the head quite proves that.
(who needs a head when you got a '70 Plymouth Barracuda anyways?)
Tournaments are frequent because kids like tournaments (you get to see all those old characters again!), and it's also easy for the artist, since you don't need to come up with much story for like the two, three years a tournament arc lasts.
What's the /co/ of Naruto?
>NGEs wasn't fulfilling at all and was more of a final "Fuck you" to the audience from Anno.
I'm gonna stop you right there. EoTV was what depressed people want to hear, that all of their emotional problems will be solved in one big magical moment where all their friends and acquaintances gather around them to say "you're a good man, Charlie Brown." That was a load of bullshit.
The End of Evangelion was what people suffering from depression needed to hear. It was raw, it was painful, but it was the truth. And if you don't see that, you either don't live with depression or are unwilling to see the world as it is.
Believe it or not the manga of apocalypse zero of all things touches upon japans WW2 war crimes.
Couldn't that speech to Shinji have been said at the beginning of the show? He doesn't really grow throughout the series up until the very end in one single moment and it's all for nothing since all of humanity has been destroyed anyways.
Hi, Bennett. What's it like being a "sage?"
Seriously, though.. humanity being "destroyed" is the point. Shinji decides he'll go on living, come what may.. and then is immediately thrust into the harshest situation of his young life. He's all alone with someone who now utterly despises him. That's the fucking point.
Okay, what would the anime equivalent of this be?
I can't think of anything.
And just when I thought the show itself was weird (Shezow). You just made me SURE of that.
>I, My, Me Strawberry Eggs for the crossdressing.
>tfw I looked that up on google
pic related. I'd be afraid to ask how many of this is out there in Japan.
You're sure? I mean that one looks (at least for me) a pretty legit guy. For the record,I've seen real life men have such hair.
There is literally nothing to compare beside they go to space.
I mean, I suppose Cute High Earth Defense Club LOVE! could be a possible equivalent but I guess they're not really disguised as girls. I guess the sailor starlights from the sailor moon anime count since they turn into girls when they transform into the sailor soldiers but they're not main characters.
I'm just going to say this: TTGL may be based on Megas XLR's idea,as 99% of the events happen the same in both shows.
Could be. Still,Strawberry Eggs looks weird as fuck.
Eoe was also Anno going retarded with the metashit to criticize otaku that masturbate to 14 year old girls that he and company have been sexualizing since day one. He's the biggest hypocrite in the industry and I'll never understand how evafags like you believe everything he says is right. It's not like him, you, and anyone on this site actually practices his "deep" messages
Only things that kind of come to mind:
Lain - The Maxx
Evangelion and Utena - Steven Universe (mildly)
GITS - Aeon Flux
Black Lagoon - Totaly Spies or Kim Possible
Besides Mushishi I don't even know the rest but those kind of come to mind.
Actually, those are pretty well fitting. What do you think the equivalent for Princess Tutu would be? I've looked everywhere for a similar cartoon show to this but I'm at a dead end.
>>an idiot, a worthless asshole, and a "smart one"
>>loosely disconnected plot structure
>>a handful of recurring characters
>crude and pointless comedy
>mixed genres and a deep story
yeah, i prefer the good ol dandy cock thank you very much.
Whats the /co/ equivalent? Id reckon some Grant Morrison, The Filth probably, but I'm not sure.
Meant to post this but hey i may be on the mark for both
>loved by fujoshits
>boys being boys
Hey guys, did you know the Japanese version of TMNT and Transformers has a different script from the English version? And guess what, people over there don't bitch about it just because it's different!
When watching SU i sometimes got that FLCL feeling.
They are both about a boy growing up, with some strange power triggered by emotions.
Some alien chick(s) messing around.
That huge floating hand.
Was the staff ever asked if they got some inspiration from FLCL ?
Have we ever even dine slice of life like this?
South park is probably the closest for Osomatsu-san, except it's less restricted in what it can do with visuals.
Speaking of which, Wander Over Yonder = Space Dandy.
>Shin Chan (FUNimation) belongs more to /co/ than /a/. I believe it was written for Adult Swim
I'm getting deja vu.
self destructive is lovable?
It's also ignoring a lot of negative stuff...
>let kyle have his kidney
So that one episode...
I'm just looking at this and you're really reaching.
None of the kids in the show are really all that nice or lovable. They're pretty mean little shit to each other. Kinda why the show works and is funny.
Everyonce in a while a manga/anime manages to squeeze itself through the cracks.
Most of the time the goverment try and stop them because they don't want the new generation to know that Japan was (and still is) a stretched out stinking asshole.
That's total bull there's plenty of good dubs. Like Baccano, Trigun, cowboy bebob, flcl, Jing king of bandits, Hellsing, Dragonball, slayer orphen, G gundamn, hell most gundamns, Excel saga, full metal panic, full metal alchemist, berserk, onepice the funimation dub nana, rurouni kenshin, berserk, zach bell. To list a few.
>boys being boys
They're all 20+ year old men. They just act like they're still in their teens or even younger.
Who the fuck in their 20s wears a santa suit on Christmas
It can also be compared to non lewd To love ru
Are there any anime where one of the characters is voiced by the creator of the thing? Because when you think about it, it's not really all that uncommon for it to happen it cartoons. Mickey Mouse, Mordecai, Flapjack, LSP, Brendon Small, Peter Griffin/a shit ton of characters, Jonathan Katz, Rick and Morty, and probably more are all voiced by the guys who made them.
>implying adventure time was ever good
I thought the first season of Wakfu was like a kid-friendly fantasy version of Stardust Crusaders.
>Some kid with a hat, a swordsman with crazy hair, an old man, a ranged fighter, a black person and a sapient animal go on a journey to defeat a time-stopping madman
>Almost everyone has some sort of strange power
One of the characters is killed by the villain's top underling
Gurren Lagann = Green Lantern TAS
Kimba the White Lion = Lion King
Ghost In the Shell = Animatrix
Jojo = Upcoming Castlevania Series
I've never watched Love Live and yet I still feel slightly insulted
You think the Osomastsu boys will ever make it on Toonami?
what about bojack horseman ? i felt something similar with welcome to the nhk but i don't think is the anime equivalent
someone told me that kaiji is similar but i haven't watched yet
who would dub them ?
Really that's the place I'd least expect it.
I also kind of doubt it'll ever get a dub.
>mfw they 4kidz it up
>HEY OSOMASTSU THIS IS SOME BOMB AS DONUTS AND PABST BLUE RIBBON BEARS HUH
>YEAH, WHY ARE WE IN THEIS BATH TUB WITH OTHER MEN, BUNCHA HOMOS
Prove me wrong
The creators of PS&G really took Drawn Together at face value. DT is really creative and original with it's shocking content. PS&G was just THIS EPISODE IS POO JOKES! THIS EPISODE IS WANKING JOKES etc. The referecnes in PS&G were all misplaced and weren't even realted to the situation half the time like Chuck to the Future.
PS&G saving grace was it's sound track and that the show is super good looking for a flash show made on a budget of chips
>Preadolescents with superpowers an an obvious BBEG who won't die and just kinda drops out of the story halfway through only to resurface and prove that he's impossibly OP.
Er, classic Teen Titans.
It has to be Chibi Maruko-chan, I think the stories for both shows would fit between each other.
whats the TDKR of anime/manga? is there one?
I was always reminded of pic related by Star Butterfly.
Only Star was actually on a good show.
This. Most shounen anime seems perfect for the middle school crowd. It's got enough edge for the viewers to feel cool and mature, but the characters, motivations, and themes are simplified and removed from adult reality.
They have Sumo/shogi/etc tournament, undokai, tests to decide which school they will end on, tests to decide which university they will end on, etc. competition is a constant in their life.
I don't get how people do this so often. It is like confusing Mexico with Canada. I have seen a guy talking a bunch of nonsense about Japan claiming that he have been there and when asked to prove that he actually have been there he posted a picture of a touristic spot on China! And them when called on it he start saying that it is mostly the same and shit.
