Despite the way this ends, the whole sequence treats Jack really fairly and lets him shine. It's almost as if when it's aforegone conclusion, you don't have to shit on the other guy.
I wouldn't be surprised if this sequence was what caught DnA's eye and that's how Jack's plot came about. Because he otherwise had no goddamn reason to be there.

It doesn't bother me if the story isn't using it as cover to be slanderous without naming names; Khandaq follows in a long tradition of fictional DC locations specifically designed to maintain a suspension of disbelief, and when it's a monarchy it's comfortably its own thing. When it's not, I can see where it's more sketchy.
But also, if a writer is going to go in admitting they're ignorant, it's slightly better to be ignorant about a fake place than a real one. That's the ultimate fail-state of writing fiction, fucking up basic details on something that actually exists.
