The show always went out of its way to show soldiers jumping out of any crashing/sinking vehicle, where they definitely managed to escape to safety. This was a children's show and it would be unacceptable to show or imply that someone died, until Korra when it was okay to show a guy sucking the oxygen out of someone's lungs but not okay for two girls to kiss.
