Because historically hyenas have always been seen as ugly, witches, dirty, stupid, gluttonous scavenging hermaphrodites that would feast on human corpses.

As much as hyenas are way better than lions, what other animal would fit in the role as villain henchmen? Hyenas really are lions only real competition and any other real danger to lions are herbivores. A cackling zebra isn't as intimidating as a hyena.

They had very sound motives, but then again most good villains have. You could say that the lions bully everyone else into submission and enforcing their monarchy but the hyenas didn't do anything different.
There can't be peaceful coexistance with everyone being happy and fed so someone has to starve, and since the main characters are bright and funny and the antagonists are dark and ugly we root and jeer accordingly.

It seemed like there were much more hyena's than lions, they could have easily overrun them. Their crime was being stupid, which is why lions didn't want them in the Pride Lands to begin with as they would overhunt and disrupt the circle of life.

They never outright said that but I remember Zazu calling them mangy poachers. The new shit show The Lion Guard also has the hyenas straight up going into the pridelands and killing antelopes for fun because 'fuck the circle of life' basically. On top of that, vultures are also banished in the show.
