Search your feelings. You know it to be true.

Why is it that Sadness manhandling and/or panhandling memories is her "not being in control of herself" and still a protagonist, but Joy making a mistake and thinking she can literally throw away core memories is her "ruining everything by refusing to allow sadness" and is a villain? They're both as unintentional as each other.
>>
>>77985826
Because Sadness acted how she was programmed to act. She reacted to a variable thrown at her and tried to apply sadness.
Meanwhile, Joy wanted to create a monopoly over all events of Riley's life, making her an unbalanced mess.

Not really, most parents tell their children some variation of 'stiff upper lip' and should. The situation they are in is not able to be escaped from and the father is aware of that and moping around would simply stress him further.

Wait, if Joy was always looking to control every aspect of Riley and is obviously the emotion in charge, once Riley grows up, will all her emotions become a variation of Joy?

Much like all her dad's emotions were a variation of Anger and her mum's sadness? Is Joy taking the first natural step to making Riley someone who is naturally very happy?

Did you not notice how the adults' emotions were more unified and diplomatic than the kids'? The primary emotion has a lot to do with overall personality.

The sad was disciplined and pragmatic, the mother was empathetic and responsible. Riley having Joy as her lead emotion could make her an optimist, or someone who would work well with kids, or someone who turns into a huge slut that mounts every dick in line of sight.
>>

This was so frustrating. I liked it, but I felt it was constrained by Pixar's formula of two-people-with-different-worldviews-have-to-work-together-to-survive-in-an-unknown-environment. The other emotions shouldn't have been relegated to secondary characters.

Y'know what'd be fucking great?
If they made an Inside Out 2 involving the full development of the brain and abandoning childhood for responsibility.

Prior to a certain age, a child's brain is literally not in a state to properly reason. They kinda showed it in the film with how they upgraded the board at the end, but surely there is a "final upgrade" that the parents and adults had.

Getting that final upgrade probably involves the end of puberty and entering adulthood. That'd be a pretty interesting story in the brain.
Maybe not the best option for a kids movie though.

>Antagonist

This is what Joy was to Sadness for 95% of the film. Sadness realized early on Riley needed a balance of emotions but Joy being the control freak she was didn't realize this until she almost ceased to exist.

The scene where Riley dies.
>>
>>77981285
The movie is about how the human brain grows more complex as children grow.

In youth, the portions of the brain are exactly what the basic emotion is. Happiness is only handles by the "happy" portion. Sadness is only sad, anger only anger.

In adulthood they handle very complex emotional mixes, Sadness being empathy and Anger is responsibility as you see in her parents.

So the plot is immature people learning new roles.

Given that she has read most of the mind manuals, it's a safe bet to assume the opposite.

She would have said it was in the mind manuals if it did. Also, those mind manuals contain nothing about the emotion's functions, only how to recall memories and navigate long term

>those mind manuals etc
What a load of shit. You can't say that with any level of certitude since there are fucking loads of them and you're forgetting that Sadness knew a lot about the mind. Joy had absolutely no clue whatsoever about anything so relied on Sadness to navigate (and then she conveniently ignored this when she needed to micromanage everything again).

For example Sadness knew about abstract thought and what would happen if it were turned on. She also knew how to induce a nightmare in order to wake up Riley. She also knew about imaginationland and the subconscious and what everything is for. There's plenty of things Sadness intuitively understood.
>>
>>78007507
Her nose is pointy because she has a sharp sense of smell befitting of her character. I like little visual puns like that.
>>
>>78008476
That's about the inside of the mind, not how memories and emotions interact to change them.
>>
>>78008577
You mean the one book whose topic we got to see, out of the many many books in the shelf?
>>
>>78008735
Ask me this, why would there be a manual on how the memories would function if no one knew how it would work due to Riley's mind as a whole being young and not know anything about empathy?
>>
>>78008854
Empathy is a thing learned at a very young age. Typically it becomes measurable at around the age of two.

To answer your question: consider Riley is 11. Consider that this age is when abstract thought begins to develop. Consider that Sadness had intimate knowledge of its function and purpose.
>>
>>78008476
From what I could get the mind manuals are the manuals for the exterior of the HQ, since it is useless in he HQ nobody cared to read them there except Sadness who was made to read them all by Joy.
>>
>>78009149
I got the impression that Sadness read them because the other emotions ignored her and avoided her so when she became bored Sadness would read them to pass the time. Mostly because Riley was the perpetually-happy kid so Sadness rarely actioned upon a situation.

I guess this is why Joy says "Nobody really knows what she does"

Not sure people here grasp the meaning of the word antagonist. Antagonists aren't villains exclusively and neither are the protagonists the good guys.

The protagonist is the one who we follow through the story and the antagonist is the one (either a person or something else) who stands in the way of completeng the goal. If we follow a story about a robber and his heist, the robber is the protagonist and the police is the antagonist.

In this case, both Joy and Sadness are the protagonists but the antagonist are Riley's suppressed emotions and how they affect her consious mind.

i think what you wanted to say is, and correct me if I'm wrong, that Joy is a selfrighteous asshole and she is. She just doesn't know better.

>>
>>78022507
If anyone is the villain, it's the mother for putting the idea in Joys head
>>
>>78022507

see, this is part of why I rate this film so highly.

about the closest thing to an active threat in this was Jangles, who at no point was all like "oh hey, let's go fuck Riley up" he just wanted to be a clown. Anger certainly exacerbated the situation, but he was going to the last resort because as far as the three emotions in HQ were concerned, all other options had been exhausted.

And for all of the turmoil going on, the worst case scenario of this movie is "a kid gets on a bus". That's it. No appocolypse, no adorable ants getting their shit kicked in, nobody dies, just a girl getting on a bus. Yet the scene where Riley gets on the bus was easily one of the most tense moments in film this year and that should say something.
>>
>>78022543
Calm your tits Joy defense force! I said "almost". I don't think Joy actually was bad enough to be a villain (even though she killed a bunch of imaginary boyfriends to achieve her goals). The mother would be a mistake caused by not realizing how much all the situation had affected Riley again because Riley didn't exteriorized her feeling. Joy was trying to keep Sadness away and as consequence the family didn't know what Riley actually was passing through but the mother did know what the father was passing through so she asked Riley to support him without noticing that Riley was in need of support herself.

This was one of the reasons Sadness was necessary. To let people know things are not alright just like pain is necessary for you to notice that some part of your body is not alright.

No fucking way. They are a one-hit wonder that hipsters and faggot fanboy/fangirls ravenously consume because they keep coming back to TWD and muh feels.

I'm still mad about The Wolf Among Us being a letdown after that great opening episode, and Telltale now simply exist to churn out poor visual novels of the latest meme franchise.

>>
>>78026373

I'm not quite sure if you're joking anon.

if you're sincere, then you misread it slightly. if you're avin' a giggle m8, then the answer is craptastic flash nose surgery games or shameless unity-based steam shovelware, which gets to be worse on the basis you actually have to pay for that garbage.
>>
>>78026625

huh. I'll admit I never actually played their games, I heard so many great things about TWD and thought if anybody's going to do it justice it would be them.

if we're going the platformer route, then I think insomniac might be able to conjure up some magic. If you've got a good enough team you might even be able to do a portal-tier physics puzzler and I dare say the team behind Child of Light could do a good RPG around it.
>>
>>78026733
You will hear a Telltale fan gush about TWD constantly, but ask their opinion on the other games and there will be a miniscule, but noticeable pause. If you're discerning of people, you will spot a microexpression of doubt flash across their face as their caged and suppressed logical rationality briefly battles with their fanboy emotion. Suddenly, their expression turns back to gush-mode and they then praise everything.

>play as Joy
>task is to find 5 core memories that were corrupted by an emotion
>each memory is in a different part of the brain (zones for gameplay purposes)
>each core memory boss battle teleports the characters to a twisted version of the scene found in that memory, and the emotion that caused that memory to become corrupted is whom you must defeat since they also became corrupted in the process
>collecting a core memory shows a cutscene where Riley perks up a bit and begins acting like her real self, and the emotion joins you to find the others
>the 5th memory battle involves Joy battling a mirror of herself
>you can switch between emotions at will, each one has specific abilities that will help you overcome puzzles and obstacles throughout Riley's mind
>emotions can work together to solve the even more difficult puzzles
>certain puzzles and obstacles and situations will cause a particular emotion to "tap out" where they will not help you, for example Disgust will refuse to help during the Imaginary Boyfriend mini-boss stage
>Bing Bong is a special unlockable character that you can acquire by finding memory fragments then taking the memory fragments to the projector at HQ and making Riley remember him
>Bing Bong has all of the abilities of the 5 emotions, and is able to use the Rocket Ship special attack during battle
>the final boss is Jangles the clown which takes place in the sixth world, the subconscious
>>
>>78028891
>>78028891
>HQ is normal, then something happens, scattering the five emotions and ~20 core memories across Riley's mind
>Play as Joy, who has a special ability: double jump
>story switches out between the five emotions who keep meeting together and losing each other
>The other emotions have abilities too
>Sadness can grow plants and push on large buttons (think portal)
>Disgust can swing on vines with her scarf and can float
>Fear can run very fast and go into tight spaces
>Anger can burn and break stuff
>sometimes, when the emotions meet up, they can combine their abilities
>Anger can throw Fear across long distances, Joy can use Disgust as a parachute, Sadness and Anger can create clouds to access new areas etc.
>there are 20 core memories to collect across Riley's mind to beat the game, 2 in each area. You only need one to access the next chapter
>In order to 100% the game you need to collect more stuff along the way
>You meet a mind worker along the way who duplicated and "accidentally" scattered 120 Tripledent gum memories around her mind, Dream productions lost random props etc.
>There are 10 chapters, each with 10 subchapters.
>You navigate the chapters in a hub like the LEGO movie games

>the console illuminates gradually as you complete the game
>to complete the game, you must fully illuminate the console, and you can activate it to start the ending cinematic
>certain characters will ask you to undertake mini-quests that require specific characters or unlocks, for example Miss Unicorn may ask you to rescue her sheep that unfortunately got sucked into the giant vacuum cleaner; Anger is needed for this quest since only he can melt the vacuum bag and body so the sheep have a means of escape
>HQ must be periodically visited to check for new quests and memories that Riley creates
>her actions reflect the state of her mind, which in turn will influence the game world
>certain emotions can be sent back to HQ to manage Riley's day - choose the right emotion for the job or certain quests will be more difficult or impossible or simply locked out

>Her actions can alter the landscape of her mind or her choices which Fear is in charge of
>The more things she kills, the more enemies spawn in her mind. If she kills too much enemies, she could breakdown and the world in her mind would be flooding with enemies
>Her morality changes with killing things, allowing Riley to do things that you wouldn't be able to do (And changes the landscape outside HQ) due to Fear becoming braver

I am also down with an Inside Out themed horror experience. I think the best kind of enemy here would be other humans, with some of them being actually nice and try to help you once in a while, while others have ulterior motives and yet others who just straight up want to impale you on their car.

the "0 kills" ending could involve Riley getting some kind of reward or going on to try and fix the world, the more murky endings could be variants, with Riley just wandering the earth, displaced and without any kind of direction to her life and the bad end probably involves her going catatonic or something horrible like suicide, but you've got to really, really fuck up hard to do that.

seeing as we're spitballing, how would combat work here horror-game-anon? Riley's got some decent upper body strength and command of blunt instruments if she plays hockey but she's not going to be too good in a scrap against most anybody bigger than her. Finally, how would health work?

As Riley's mortality will be determined by killing people and animals (they will be enemies too, some will be friendly) it would have different ranges. But the longer she has gone without killing, the faster her mortality will drop. One of the ways of bringing it back would be to defeat the enemies that spawn in her mind. She has also choice to not to kill but will impact her mind by blocking access to happy memories. The endings would be determined by
>Kills
>amount of happy memories
>current mortality
>whether or not Joy and co made it back or not
Bosses for Riley will be optional based on what you do, but the final boss isn't. You must kill him in order to win. There is also leveling system where you can level up by doing things
0 kills ending:
>You kill final boss in a arena in order to prove your worth and you become leader
>Riley becomes very unstable due to the shock of actually killing someone
>she becomes forever coruppted

The battles that involve Riley work like earthbound and the battles for the emotions would work like Final Fantasy. Riley starts with a hockey stick and uses random crap she finds. There also would be a durability system with some items.

The health would work like some numerical value

There also would be another criteria for endings
>If Joy and co finish their quest

You can switch between Riley and the emotions at anytime except battles and cutscenes.

You can decide to finish the emotion's quest or only do Riley's. However, if you decide to finish the emotion's journey first, you will get Riley with her emotions back with a price. The battles and dialogue will be vastly different as Riley will have her emotions. Beating the emotion's quest without any of the emotions getting KO'd or if it's permadeath, you get to start a new game with the emotions together from the beginning of the game

It's not even implied she isn't. Like, the movie is very direct with the fact that her attitude is what caused the main conflict.
>>
I think the message of the story was that you can't choose one emotion over the rest. If you only have Joy, then you will be emotionally shallow and immature, which is why Joy was so shallow and immature in the beginning.

The movie also makes it seem like the emotions were acting apart from Riley when in fact, the emotions were just a reflection of what Riley was doing on her own. When Joy was trying to subvert all the other emotions so she could have control, it was actually Riley who was doing that because she's been taught that she's valuable to her parents when she is a happy girl.

And when Sadness loses control and touches memories, it's really Riley not being able to mask her sadness with joy anymore.

The emotions aren't really antagonists or protagonists, they are just reflections of what is going on inside the characters. They are not autonomous.

When Joy was trying to subvert all the other emotions so she could have control, it was actually Riley who was doing that because she's been taught that she's valuable to her parents when she is a happy girl.

This is a relatively shallow understanding of what was going on.

It's not either "The five emotions are little people who guide a young girl" or "the five emotions are reflections of the little girls own emotional turmoil", it's both.

This is like the people who think The Babadook can't both be a story about a spooky monster and a depression. Like it has to be the one or the other.

>Fear has isolated himself high up in the scoreboard box, from where he shouts orders to the twisted manifestations of Riley's old hockey team, who use the corrupted core memory orb as a puck
>to defeat him, Joy and Anger must avoid being knocked out by the hockey team, and they must use the memory orb to knock Fear off the scoreboard
>Anger can temporarily melt sections of the rink to prevent the hockey team from hurting Joy, who can then take a shot at the scoreboard, but Anger must also protect himself from the players (controls will switch from Anger to Joy when Anger has melted a section of ice)
>Fear can then easily be defeated by shoving the core memory orb in his mouth so he can finally swallow his fear
>the three emotions will happily reunite and watch as the frozen, evil ice rink melts away into the old, happier Hockey Island
>>
>>78054948
>the core memory that created Goofball Island was corrupted by Disgust
>the living room of her old parent's house is now a surgical ward of non-color, where everything is shrink-wrapped, family photos containing Riley are removed or placed face down, and a place where all laughter is silenced
>to defeat her, Joy, Fear, and Anger, must find fragments of the shattered core memory to teach Disgust that too much shame turns a person into a shell
>whilst they are trying to do this, Disgust will constantly try to give the three terribly warped makeovers
>Disgust's arms are covered in fresh cut wounds and old scars, her face is covered with a mask to hide her face, and she uses a hairbrush formed of razorblades and the makeup is made of blood, sinew, and all manner of human effluence
>when she is defeated, sunlight will pour into the living room, revealing the original colors and burning away the shrink wrap
>with tears streaming down her face, the restored Disgust will gently pick up a photograph containing Riley and she'll explain how she forgot just how beautiful she is, then ashemedly she'll say she doesn't deserve to be responsible for Riley
>Joy and the others will pick her up and hug her, telling her to not be ashemed of herself
>then the four will look out the living room window to see Goofball Island rising back out of the memory dump

>Honesty represents the penultimate battle for the four emotions, and they must fight Sadness
>the location is a rainy, stormy one, and one that takes place in what seems to be oddly like a confession box made of craggy stone and misty cloud ebbs from the cracks and crevices
>Sadness herself doesn't appear at all, she simply talks to the emotions while they have to scale the cliffs and rocks to reach her way above them
>the cliffs contain angry Cloud Town folk and the emotions must dodge lightning bolts AND scale the cliff ahead of the rising water, lest they drown in the churning waters
>Sadness will ask them harsh questions and make brutal accusations like "Did you ever think about anyone other than yourself, Joy? You didn't care about Riley, you only made her happy to make yourself happy, and look what you did to everyone."
>upon reaching the top, they'll find Sadness simply sitting there, looking perfectly normal, waiting for them
>the emotions must offer a heartfelt apology and she'll come to her senses and apologize
>the whole gang will gather clouds together and fly from Sadness's "nest", and they'll circle around the regenerating Honesty Island
>Sadness, sitting next to Joy, will say "What do we do about Family Island?"
>Joy will reply, "I have a feeling we're going to have to pay a visit... to me." and the other emotions will exchange alarmed glances

>the game is presented in third person, with a large, interactive San Francisco that you explore as you play through.
>the main threat of the game are the various untrustworthy characters you meet along the way.
>combat is risky but not impossible. By default, Riley has a halfway decent punch and her hockey stick, but she also has relatively little strength and unless you pick up protective items, cannot withstand too much punishment.
>combat is almost entirely melee-based and mostly avoidable by either making the right choices earlier in the game or physically avoiding your assailant. in all situations, Riley can disarm or cripple an opponent if needs be. This can be done as a relatively "expensive" strike with her stick (or a similar weapon) or through use of environmental factors and occasionally by reasoning with your attacker.
>during combat, as well as health, Riley's energy is also a consideration. Escaping a grapple attack, for example, requires a lot of energy and therefore locks out some of the attacks that might otherwise have been available. Similarly, sprinting and heavier attacks consume energy.
>emotions can be invoked during combat as well, for short-term help, with Fear allowing Riley to continue running past the energy threshold, with the consequence of having Riley become completely exhausted and require external factors to fully recover.

>some amount of RPG elements are present throughout the game. These range from survival-lite elements and a more involved health system to choices and dialogue options, where the emotions allow Riley to talk to other humans who might not want to immediately kill her.

continued in a bit.

Lacked an antagonist, lacked any real conflict, and all sense of urgency was obviously artificial and forced.

It had nothing driving it forward. I mean, narratively it did, sure, but there was nothing compelling about it.

Also, the whole Joy leaving Sadness behind thing wasn't that big a deal. Sadness would just have to take the long way, which was the plan anyway. She wanted Riley to be happy as much as Joy did. And if she killed herself, no one would notice lol.

a bit turned out to be a day, still:

>All healing is done slowly over a longer period of time.
>food/water isn't essential, but it works similar to minecraft, whereby if you have food, you can regenerate health and stamina over time. water is a quicker fix but doesn't provide the benefits of a full stomach.
>sleeping also allows Riley to heal and accelerates the process, however, sleeping still uses up food and leaves Riley vulnerable. it is possible to go the entire game without sleeping, but this affects things like Riley's reflexes, stamina and speed if you go more than a certain amount of time without sleeping.
>some food you encounter is expired. Expired food gives less nutrition and carries a risk of illness. When you come across this kind of food, you can choose between Joy, Fear and Disgust to drive the action, with Joy being a "just eat it" response, Fear being a slightly more measured response (he might suggest microwaving the shit out of it kill germs, for example) and Disgust being a total rejection at the expense of Riley's nutritional state.

continued again.
>>
>>78073906

>the game has a set start and climax, but most everything between those points is up to the player.
>When interacting with other characters, Riley's emotions present dialogue options. For example, if you are suspicious of a person, you can choose Fear as a response and Riley will try to avoid the person and close off, whereas Sadness can be used to ask for help from somebody or reason with them in certain situations.
>these interactions often take Riley down one path at the expense of another, some paths are obviously more dangerous than others.
>For example, early on in the game, Riley bumps into two of her teachers and they both invite her to stay at their house for the night while the crazies are roaming around. Choosing Mr Perkins takes you to a sketchy neighbourhood and a tatty old house, the food there isn't as good and a couple of riskier encounters present themselves on the way there. Once in the spare room, you get the option to stay awake all night because you don't trust him, stay up an hour or so, just to be sure, or zonk out straight away, feeling safe.
>in either case, Mr Perkins gets you a decent breakfast in the morning and gives you some advice. the achievement "books and covers" is unlocked.
>if you go on his computer you get the option to see his browsing history, revealing he is, in fact, very gay and doesn't have all that much money, hance the tatty house.
>should you choose Mrs Walker, she takes you to a nicer neighbourhood and gives you nice food.
>Again, the option to stay up all night, stay up a bit or just go right to sleep is presented.
>staying up all night results in an awkward encounter where you find she may have ulterior motives, from there you can decide to leave, stay, or trust what she's saying and just settle down.
>choosing to stay up a little while results in Riley finally deciding to go to sleep just before Mrs Walker sneaks in the room and thus starts a fight/flight scenario.

continued, again.
>>
>>78074208

>choosing to just sleep straight away results in Riley being woken up by Mrs Walker and subjected to attempted high impact sexual violence. Again, a fight/flight scenario opens up, but this particular encounter is much harder, as Riley is without her hockey stick, disoriented and being subjected to attempted rape with various toys.
>Again, checking her computer reveals early that she's a lesbian and her tastes verge on the dangerously young side, there are also some suspect files on her desktop.

Sadness was useless and there was no good reason for her to change all of the old core memories into sad ones

Them you don't understand the core of a children movie. This have been discussed thousands of times already.
>>
>>78111300

No, I get the idea that sometimes you need sadness in your life for good moments to happen

It was just conveyed terribly through a thoroughly unlikeable character

She want's to make you happy and if that requires tying you up and milking you with an extra large strap on then goshdarn it she'll go for it and have a great time all the while. Disgust would just kind of tug on it and do something else while she waits for you to finish.
